A new 'smart rifle' decides when to shoot and rarely misses

Mark Dewey
NPR

A new rifle goes on sale on Wednesday, and it's not like any other. It uses lasers and computers to make shooters very accurate. A startup gun company in Texas developed the rifle, which is so effective that some in the shooting community say it should not be sold to the public.

It's called the TrackingPoint rifle. On a firing range just outside Austin in

the city of Liberty Hill, a novice shooter holds one and takes aim at a target 500 yards away. Normally it takes years of practice to hit something at that distance. But this shooter nails it on the first try.

The rifle's scope features a sophisticated . The shooter locks a laser on the target by pushing a small button by the trigger. It's like a video game. But here's where it's different: You pull the trigger but the gun decides when to shoot. It fires only when the weapon has been pointed in exactly the right place, taking into account dozens of variables, including wind, shake and distance to the target.

Reminds me of The Jackal (1997), great scene.

The people should have this

The people should have this gun and technology, not the federal government which is why we, the people, must continually strive to strip funding from government at every level.

I gotta have one.. 338

I gotta have one.. 338 lapua...

Oh I want one of those!

Oh I want one of those!

Interesting

We have a group that has integrated our in-house IMU, a laser range finder, and tracking algorithms for other similar applications... gonna forward this video to them.

Equal access!

If the Govt can get them, then we should too!
Anyone trying to use the terrorist or evil element as an argument to restrict access need only look to the east where thousands of RPG's and heat seeking missiles are in the hands of unsavory types... If you have enough money, you can get it! PERIOD!

Not sold to the public? I

Not sold to the public?

I could go with 'not sold to anyone'.

It's government that is the biggest threat with a weapon like this. Not some gun-geek with money to spend on such thing. Gun geeks are really of no concern to anyone.

aimbot?

I'm actually a little scared of that. lol

Great. DHS will order thousands of 'em with our

money... to use against us.

doesn't make any difference. My 338 lapua shoots just as well. 3000 yards, I just have to do all the calculations that that rifle does automatically. Will take me extra time but that's all.

Yeah, because extra time is

Yeah, because extra time is no big deal at all when you're talking about a gun fight.

No problem.

Let them buy them and we'll just take them from DHS agents.

Problem is

they are password protected. So you'd have to waterboard the dhs agent first to get the password.

If you have

the physical device you can get around a password.

Strong passwords are most effective when a hacker can't get to the physical device, such as on a remote web server.

Good to know

Yeah all

you need is one model that is unlocked. You can then transfer that unlocked mode to other devices. It might take a while to get the hack going initially, but once you did it would be easy to replicate.

I hope they thought to put an "Abort Shot" button on it

I'd hate to be sitting there waiting for a half hour on a windy day for a gun to finally decide to fire.

Lol

"...Okaaayyy..." "I'd like to put this in the rack already..."

Or

Have some computer hacker break into the program and have all these guns shoot at the same time. LOL

For

18 grand? I doubt it. It's probably got a "about to shoot" and an "off" button....;)
It doesn't take long to dial in either. They were tested here in Austin and then they took them to Africa. They killed animals, not people. (this time)
I think this is the first time where a RIFLE comes included WITH the scope.
Pretty freakin scary. Looks kind of delicate though. IDK.
