Glenn GreenwaldSubmitted by kevink on Sat, 05/25/2013 - 06:13
EDIT: As it turns out, Glenn Greenwald was NOT pro the Iraq war. A big thank you to user "LapHog", who pointed out in the comments below that Glenn Greenwald wrote the article in the URL below called "Frequently told lies (FTLs) by Glenn Greenwald"
I saw this article in Huffington Post just now about the Phil Donahue/Chris Matthews and their Iraq war. My post is not about the article, however, but of one of the comments.
The comment is from user JonBFertippton saying "I remember how media people like Tom Friedman, Christopher Hitchens, and even Glenn Greenwald fell over themselves to approve of Bush's attack on Iraq."
Can anyone verify this? Was Glenn Greenwald really pro-Iraq war at one point? I only started following Glenn Greenwald recently and it certainly seems inconsistent with what I've heard from him. But maybe he too got swept up in the propaganda from back then?

I remember the atmosphere of fear spread so knowingly by the Bush administration during the build-up to the Iraq aggression. I remember how millions of Americans took to the streets in protest and how the media "failed" to report those protests, as if they had never happened. I remember how media people like Tom Friedman, Christopher Hitchens, and even Glenn Greenwald fell over themselves to approve of Bush's attack on Iraq.
Phil Donahue was the exception; he was the bravest media person at that time. He invited expert critics of Bush's obvious rush to war and asked questions that the White House did not want to hear. At that same time, Matthews did what he had to do to preserve and advance his career. I remember his enthusiasm for Bush during that "Mission Accomplished" fiasco on the aircraft carrier. I recall him in a frenzy over how you just had to be impressed by Dubya's presence and stature. It was sickening.
Yesterday I heard Matthews preening himself over his opposition to the Iraq campaign from the beginning. What opposition? I don't remember that. I do remember what strength, integrity and real patriotism Phil Donahue showed. He is an example that few people in the media or in politics can equal. He stood up for the best American values and paid a high price. Matthews is not in the same league. I have nothing but admiration or Donahue.
