Senators Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Mike Lee Rightly Vote Against GMO Law

Senators Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, and Mike Lee voted against Senate Amendment 954, the GMO Label Law amendment to the 2013 Farm Bill, which will likely be voted on in the Senate on June 4.

Quoting from the text of the GMO Law amendment,

“To permit States to require that any food, beverage, or other edible product offered for sale have a label on indicating that the food, beverage, or other edible product contains a genetically engineered ingredient.”

The amendment to the 2013 farm bill failed 71-27, with pro civil liberties Senators Paul, Cruz, and Lee voting nay. Despite calls for apology from the Senators and massive protest against genetically modified foods, the 3 Senators known for their support of Liberty have not wavered in their stance on GMO Laws.

And rightly so.

For pro health freedom Senators, it would be a surrender on principle and regressive to deliver more power to the government in efforts to get certain foods labeled or increase health awareness. It is that same government that uses that power to spend billions of American’s dollars to bailout, subsidize, and monopolize the agriculture industry at the sacrifice of smaller businesses, farms, and customers.

Did you know there is already

Did you know there is already labeling in the U S for this? It says 100% Organic. If it does not say 100% organic on the label then it has gmo. Buy organic.

You don't see just how backward that is.

Farmer A grows natural organic food as has been grown throughout history. Farmer B decides to taint the food supply with GMO, or anything else. Farmer A has to go through the extra expense of CERTIFICATION, REGULATION and OVERSIGHT to label his produce organic which makes farmer As produce cost more. Farmer B skates to the bank with his "cheaper" produce which the ignorant will buy just because it is cheaper. So now Farmer A is handicapped by higher prices and intelligent people have to pay more for there food.

Just goes to show how ignorant and backwards our society is. It also shows who supports that ignorance.

The natural way should always have right of way.

Never did I state support for

Never did I state support for this but it seems all the fuss is about people having the right to know what's in our food. Well...an easy solution would be to buy 100% organic.

Rand Paul can kiss the presidency goodbye

We shouldn't need such an amendment - although WE DO. This isn't about the FEDERAL GOV'T requiring labeling, but the federal government allowing STATES to require labeling, i.e., IF that's what the residents of a state want: “To permit States to require that any food, beverage, or other edible product offered for sale have a label..." The states should have that right to begin with - but for monopolistic corporations with ties to Washington fighting states based on the claim that *their* rights are infringed upon - you know, "restraint of trade."

The only reason Obama won was because he promised GMO labeling. He kept the votes of the whole natural/organic/enviro movement (traditionally on the left), and he DREW millions from the right. There is an ever-growing movement concerned with the consequences of genetic engineering on HUMAN HEALTH and the ENVIRONMENT. It transcends political party. The FDA has NOT been truthful about testing. And, aside from battling states and farmers in court, corporations have used underhanded tactics to squelch any bad (i.e., truthful) publicity, that, even without labeling - would likely influence our "free choices." Americans are waking up. This WILL be a presidential election issue - and deservedly so.

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.

This is anti-states' rights

In my youth, I supported federal pre-empting of state regulations because I was strictly anti-regulation, not supporting the Tenth Amendment. But the Constitution states that anything not in the Constitution is delegated to the states and to the people. A federal law permissive of GMO labeling properly delegates to the states and the people the decision on how to properly regulate food labeling.

I support Rand almost always, but disagree with his stance on the labeling law. States should have the right to compel disclosure, but not to ban anything outright.

Take back the GOP and Restore America Now.

Well then

If you support the Constitution and the tenth Amendment then what would be the point of the labeling law that allows states to require certain food labels?

If the tenth amendment still stands then the states already have this right and the law in question is completely meaningless.

To Rand and all Senators who voted against GMO labeling

Make sure you all up hold the Constitution, and really listen to yourselves when you recite the pledge of allegiance.

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

I ask you where is the liberty, and justice for me as a beekeeper that got wiped out by Monsanto's poisonous plants? Where is the liberty, and justice for the small organic farmer that just wants to grow a clean GMO free crop? Where is the liberty and justice for the farmer that wants to sell raw milk?

Where is the liberty for consumers that wants to buy organic food?

A Republic was setup by the Founding Fathers to protect the rights of the ones with the lest voice. What is wrong with all you so called Liberty lovers?

This will all have blow back (a Ron Paul quote) in the future. There will come a time when the Government will be forced to subsidize beekeepers to get the bee population back up. There will have to be pesticide free zones to protect the bees.

A most outstanding post, beeman :-)

HOWEVER, imo, it comes down to 'property rights', which we must absolutely return to. THAT, is when Liberty will prevail.

Someone needs to take Walmarts special sweet corn

to these Senators and thank them for voting against the GMO labeling law. Make sure they know that the sweet corn is a Monsanto's special variety guaranteed to have the BT gene, and have lots of viruses, with a side of Antibiotics. All topped off with a special blessing of neonicotinoid insecticide and Monsanto's own Roundup.

BTW all you liberty lovers that thinks Rand was right start eating up the same and for breakfast make sure you have a good helping of your favorite dry cereal. Top it of with the special Monsanto bovine growth hormone milk, guaranteed to have lots of pus for extra flavor. Oh don't forget to top up with the Monsanto's special beet sugar, and you know what surprise is in it.

With the listing above it's no wonder death and destruction follow Monsatan!

What death?

I want to see reports that NAME Monsanto. Surely there must be some nation.. monsanto is global, so if you HATE the US so much and don't trust the USA.. provide reports from any nation in the world.. I'll even accept UN reports. What have you got?

Here's one...

That is a patent law dispute

It does not name one person who died from eating GMO, your article talks about a time lapse, where Monsanto continued to operate past the contracted time, and my guess is Monsanto will win, not because Monsanto is so big and powerful, but becasue the farmers didn't check their crontract, continued using Monsanto and then when a little bird told them, "Hey your contract is up".. THEN they sied.. so the courts would see it as a set up against Monsanto, by farmers who used Monsanto after the contract.

GM food can cause cancer

The human health risks associated with genetically modified food have deliberately been underplayed. The 'scientific loudspeakers' of the GM industry have been so orchestrated that the moment you mention the health impact of the genetically altered foods, they pounce upon you like vultures. The reason is obvious: the financial stakes involved are so high that the industry is desperately trying to keep the food scare out of the ongoing debate.

People are dropping like flies from all types of cancers, your not going to see a death with a GMO label.

Sunbathing absolutely causes cancer

air pollution causes cancer.. harsh cleaning chemical cause cancer..

The number one cause of death is life.

You just made my day

There is a GOD after all, and justice maybe coming to Monsatan! HOORAY FOR THE BRAZIL FARMERS!

I care about you beeman

I'm sorry you're having a rough time, but you nor Ira Freeman have presented one name of a person dying from GMO. You gave me an article about pollution, and Ira about a contract law.

The Brazilian farmers used Monsanto PAST the contract. It was up to the farmers to keep on eye on the contract and stop using Monsanto immediately, IF they really didn't like Monsanto.. but they continued to use Monsanto long past the contract, and apparently someone else told them. They will lose.

Maybe the Brazillian farmers are smart enough to not wait

until a loved one dies. When you see your chickens die from the spraying................

You don't even need to leave the US

One name Anniston Alabama! Monsatan could not afford to loose one dollar over the pollution scandal there. They hide it for years while the people dropped like flies!

Not one name

You have a story based on pollution, not eating GMO.

I've seen all movies, documentaries and The World According to Monsanto. I was once where you are now. I celebrate my county banning GMO.

Monsanto is not the only corporation producing GMO http://www.biofortified.org/resources/genetic-engineering-co...

So why only the attack on Monsanto? If you are against GMO, why not ban ALL corporations producing GMO? Better yet, why not do what we did and ban GMOs? Why are you waiting for someone else to do it for you?

Also the Farm Bill amendment does not acknowledge the

Constitutional (legal) right of States already to decide their own laws under the 9th and 10th Amendments!

Honest question

I'm not for or against GMO's, mainly because I haven't researched it enough to form an educated opinion, but what I'm for is choice by the consumer. My question is the following: Is there a law that prohibits NON-GMO products from labeling their product as non-GMO? Let the consumer decide what he wants to eat and let Monsanto fight a fair fight without government protection.

Second question: why would the states need federal authorization to pass any law about labeling? Commerce Clause? If so, the clause seems too broad to me.

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom — go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, an

If you want to buy Non-GMO

look for the USDA 100% Organic lable. If the package or produce does not have a 100% organic lable, it has GMO.

Honestly...

the answers to your questions are "no" and "they wouldn't/don't".

Look you got two down votes for asking an honest questions

The GMO'ers hate people like you that ask questions that require an educated response!

a vegetable is only a

a vegetable is only a vegetable if it has not been tampered with. it is like selling one thing while claiming it to be another. it is a lie. fraud. deception. Do you sell one car and put another label on it because you copied the design? or a knock off whatever? this is knock off food and it is a SCAM and should be labeled as such and banned completely.

That makes no sense.

Genetic engineering recombines 1-3 genes. Specific breeding can cause one vegetable to differ from another in the same species by TENS OF THOUSANDS OF GENES.

By your logic should we label one apple an "apple" and then reclassify all of the other apples that do not have an identical genotype?

Seriously the more critical someone is of genetic engineering the less they seem to understand about genetics.

Hey I'm calling myself a human. You have a different genotype than me so call yourself something else.
