Warning: pbskids.org asking kids to use webcam

Warning about pbskids.org. Don't just leave it on for your kids. It has some games that ask the children playing them to use a webcam. The games do motion sensing for actions such as jumping and baseball batting.

What a creepy way for a government-funded agency to get kids to provide video from inside the home!

As a parent, I purposely

choose which sites and applications my kids choose and I can purposely pick a trusted one so that they can have the option of taking advantage of the potential of a webcam.

For example, there's a site we used to use that would lock a computer into only actions the parent pre-approves and using the webcam to talk to a grandparent is one of the options.

It's a matter of learning how to lock down children's access to things and only letting trusted things back in.

Maybe pbs isn't one of those trusted things, maybe it is, I don't know. If it's not, then the webcam needs to be turned off or taped over.

I know this isn't your main

I know this isn't your main point, but a small percentage of PBS funding comes from the government. In other words, not a "controlling interest". Some stations do receive up to 50% of their funding from the Federal government, however (see second link).

"Between 15 and 20 percent of the aggregate revenues of all public broadcasting stations have been funded from federal sources, principally through the CPB."
