Does anyone remember?

A post where a member of the DP community compared the United States Constitution to the Confederated States Constitution?
Although I was extremely pleased and impression with his effort I didn’t get a chance to take him to the woodshed on his conclusion, that he had proven the Civil War was over slavery. The reason for the Civil War was printed right there in front of him because the reason for secession was the bases for the differences between the US Constitution and the Confederated Constitution. I realize this post will take a back seat to all that is in the news the last couple weeks. There are a lot of you thinking that the change is near……I say this is all going to blow over and it will be business as usual.

First....it wasn't a civil war

A civil war is a war fought between different factions for control of the central government. Syria is currently in a civil war. Spain fought a civil war in the 30s. The North and South did not. The South did not want control of the United States government, it simply wanted out. It is better called the War Against Southern Independence, or the American Counter-Revolution.

Secondly, the war was about economics. The Hamiltonians in the North wanted high tariffs, inflation, industrial subsidies - this benefited northern capital at the expense of Southern agriculture. Jeffersonians in the South objected for practical as well as philosophical reasons. The immediate cause of the war was the tariff. The South seceded to avoid the tariff, Lincoln went to war to collect it. It had nearly happened in 1828 over another tariff. The war was in no way fought over slavery. That is an obscene myth propagated to sanctify Lincoln, who was in reality a military dictator who destroyed the republic of the founders.

Precisely.

I've always preferred to call it "The War For The Right To Secede".

Undo what Wilson did

Thanks for that most succinct explanation I've ever read of

the worst war ever.

"the worst war ever"

Indeed. The war has been made to seem kind of quaint and romantic in the movies, but most people I guess don't realize what a catastrophe it was for civilization.

Yes, it set us back centuries,

imho!

Those damn banksters!
