oh really?

"Research and other animal organizations accept shooting as an acceptable means of euthanasia."

I'm curious as to which research and animal organizations accept the shooting of 2 month old kittens as the normal way of dealing with them.

I believe we are judged by how way we treat those who are smaller and weaker than ourselves.

The A/C guy is an idiot

But so are the people who feed on this story.

2 summers ago we had a couple of locally owned cats coming by our yard.
Last summer the neighbors on both sides of us started feeding them. (A doctor's wife on one side and an engineer's wife on the other)

This summer we have EIGHT cats -- four new kittens. I enjoy watching the kitties play and learn etc. But at some point I will have to be the bad guy and do something because I'm the only one with a dog who will probably get fleas and other diseases from the cats.

So I will have to pay for the problem and my dog will be at risk.

My dog loves chasing them but because I obey the laws and don't let my dog run loose (like the cats get to) she can never finish the job.

So yes the people were told up front that the cats would be killed. And now they're acting like 3 year olds.

finish the job?

“What went so hideously wrong with the domestic dog? Man molded the domestic dog in his own worst image…self-righteous as a lynch mob, servile and vicious, replete with the vilest coprophagic perversions…and what other animal tries to fuck your leg? Canine claims to our affection reek of contrived and fraudulent sentimentality.”
-william Burroughs

"Finish the job" for her is playing with the cats

The people who gave her to us had a cat. She misses the cat.

my cats and dogs

have always gotten along great over the years, and i've always practiced being something of an animal whisperer. sorry to hear your pooch lost her friend.
what became of the cat?

They moved to a place where only cats are allowed

I really like both of my neighbors
They both like my dog too.
But I feel like they're being short sighted feeding 8 cats but not taking responsibility for their health - fleas - shots etc.
So my concern is that my dog will have issues because they hang out around our deck.

I can't believe I spent all this time talking about cats and dogs.

I am getting old.

I'm glad

you clarified that.. I was wondering what you meant~

Pathetic people

If kittens living in your yard is your biggest problem you should thank your lucky stars.
To call the authorities to deal with the kittens takes another level of low, irresponsible, lazy, selfishness.
I for one probably would have fed them. We had a mother cat raise her kittens in my shed a few years back, after our family cat had died. We fed them until they were big enough then they left and went their separate ways after a few months. One of the kittens came through the yard a year or two after that, looking healthy.

Are you a POT or a PET - Person Embracing Tyranny?

The officer involved needs to be removed from the force

If the owners of the home had more sense, they would have coaxed mom and kittens out and taken them to Ally Cat Allies or another no-kill shelter themselves, admittedly.
However, this is not at all a justification for the officer to shoot the kittens.

For cryin' out loud, how irresponsible is it to tell kids:
"Shelters are full, they are going to kitty Heaven?" I see the point of dealing with the problem they were called to deal with, but don't animal control officers have access to cages or more humane, rational ways of dealing with feral cats?

And who really cares if the kids were inside? There was no immediate danger from the kittens, and it is still fool-hardly to fire off a firearm in line of duty unnecessarily.

Is this how they are trained to deal with crisis? Would they do the same to a homeless child?

I dreamed

about this last night and it brought up a memory of my father shooting a stray cat and holding it up to show me.. I remember I ran away in horror. That happened years and years ago and it still troubles me... I can well imagine the memories these children will have in the future.

What about trapping feral

What about trapping feral cats and having them fixed so the problem is resolved long-term?

That plan probably wouldn't

That plan probably wouldn't cost more that a couple billion dollars a year. You are going to volunteer to pay extra taxes to fund the program, right?

check it out~

I used to kit-nap kittens from feral mothers and re-home them. One time I had 18 on the bottle and my hands still shake when I think about it. Friends of Forgotten Felines trapped the mothers and spayed them and I found good homes for the kittens. Never had one that didn't come around when offered good food. For this jerk to cause pain, fear and suffering to an innocent creature is disgusting. He has a cruel streak no doubt and I have to wonder how that plays out when he is dealing with humans.

Most Times Its Not An Option

feral cats cannot always be tamed and adopted out to families. Most cities police departments do not respond to feral cat calls and only respond to euthanize if they are a risk to people or children. The number of feral cats in most cities is to great to do anything but euthanize. Some private clinics or organizations will "fix" feral cats but cities usually do not.

Nice sensationalized title but this is a none story

the kids were inside the house. Humane Officers sometimes euthanize wild animals that cause a safety concern to people. In this case the cats lived next to a house with children and the concern was disease and fleas and the mother was aggressive when approached by the homeowner (safety concern to children). Also the homeowner called for the officer and expected them to be euthanized, just didn't realize he would do it there...

"Children Heard Feral Cats Being Shot Outside Their Home"

Not the same shock value is it.

I know the title was taken from the news source but you don't have to be misleading too. You need to put "feral" in the title. Also, this was not in front of the children. They heard the shots from inside the house, so I still believe the title is dishonest even after it was changed it from cop to officer.

You take an unfortunate(but I believe handled well enough to not warrant national attention) incident and try to turn it into something it is not for shock value. This is not why I come to DP.

Yes, this should have been handled by the homeowner not the tax payer - but this IS his job and they did ask him more or less to do it. So don't attack this man's character without knowing a thing about him other than, apparently he knows how to get things done without getting congressional approval. I don't know this him or anyone in this line or work but it is a stretch to call him a monster or psychopath based on the information at hand.

I think this is distracting from the very real abuses of power.
Keep it real.

I certainly got "monster"

from the thread title. I remember the sound of the gunshot from my dad euthanizing a horribly injured horse when I was a kid so it's not that I don't know that the sound is a bit rough on a kid, but the intent of the one doing it is completely different if it's a matter of not removing kids from the scene first.

Defend Liberty!

these were not

horribly injured animals.

I think this speaks to his character as a leo.. he knew he was doing something wrong and did it anyway..

Daughter of 1776 American Revolutionists

i see what you mean

it was the woman who said he "shot them in front of my children"

He allegedly told the homeowner that shelters were full and that the cats would be going to kitty heaven. He then pulled out his gun and shot the five, 8- to 10-week-old kittens.

Accorti allegedly told the homeowner that he isn't supposed to do this, but it was justifiable. The woman ran into the house to shield her children, who were screaming and crying.

(i've read a few reports now that say the kids were at the window, and somehow the label feral just wasn't enough to stop them from screaming)

If the cats are feral and

If the cats are feral and causing a problem then why didn't the homeowner kill the cats himself. Why should the taxpayers have to pay for somebody's cat problems. As libertarians, we should not expect the government to solve all our problems for us. We should take care of ourselves.

I guarranty nobody calls that guy again.

He's a walking, talking, gun-toten, one man advertisement for self-reliance! At least when it comes to animal contol.

Unfortunately, the next time they probably will 'handle' it themselves by dumping the cats or dogs onto someone else down the road.

On a similar note, in my area, they closed down a perfectly functioning shelter because the county said they could no longer afford it.

So they built a brand new facility (because they couldn't afford the old one) connected it to the sheriff's dept. and a supposedly over-worked sherrif's dept. became the new dog catcher.

Holy $TIH! What a psychopath.

Holy $TIH!
What a psychopath. The fact he didn't even hesitate to kill them away from the family or at least take them in first is frightening. Probably a monster at home too.

Holy crap.

That's a horrible story but, geez, calling the police on some kittens? Why get the police involved, anyway?
