David Brooks @ The NY Times Trashes Ron Paul/Libertarianism

Happy Reading!

Though thoughtful, morally engaged and deeply committed to his beliefs, he appears to be a product of one of the more unfortunate trends of the age: the atomization of society, the loosening of social bonds, the apparently growing share of young men in their 20s who are living technological existences in the fuzzy land between their childhood institutions and adult family commitments.

If you live a life unshaped by the mediating institutions of civil society, perhaps it makes sense to see the world a certain way: Life is not embedded in a series of gently gradated authoritative structures: family, neighborhood, religious group, state, nation and world. Instead, it’s just the solitary naked individual and the gigantic and menacing state.

This lens makes you more likely to share the distinct strands of libertarianism that are blossoming in this fragmenting age: the deep suspicion of authority, the strong belief that hierarchies and organizations are suspect, the fervent devotion to transparency, the assumption that individual preference should be supreme. You’re more likely to donate to the Ron Paul for president campaign, as Snowden did.

No need to read it

I am already aware that the token "conservative" of the New York Times is a walking, breathing piece of trash. This would just be more evidence to what I already know. Good find though. Hopefully it opens someone's eyes.

Brooks is a jackhole

This shill is attempting to paint libertarians as lone nut job losers and the sad thing is that most brain dead Americans will buy it.

I have never in my life met people as compassionate, as helpful and as kind as my liberty friends and associates.

Brooks is just another statist piece of government worshiping filth who can't grasp the idea that individual freedom is the ultimate way to help the common good.

"Do right and risk the consequences”
― Sam Houston

David Brooks; So that's what a shill looks like.

"He betrayed the

"He betrayed the Constitution. The founders did not create the United States so that some solitary 29-year-old could make unilateral decisions about what should be exposed."

I guess David Brooks has no issues with our three checks and balances of corruption, unilaterally deciding to what extent the Constitution applied to the convoluted thought of 'National Security'? It seems to me, spying on all of America without cause was the larger betrayal of the Constitution. And unlike Snowden, the douche-nozzles in Washington swore an oath to preserve and protect the Constitution.

To Sum Up The Article

David Brooks is a shill and an enemy of liberty. Ed Snowden, however, remains a hero.

I forgot that government was cooperation

For society to function well, there have to be basic levels of trust and cooperation, a respect for institutions and deference to common procedures. By deciding to unilaterally leak secret N.S.A. documents, Snowden has betrayed all of these things.

He betrayed honesty and integrity, the foundation of all cooperative activity.

I keep forgetting all of this self-rule, government of the people, cooperation stuff.

upside down and backwards

The article says:

He (Snowden) betrayed the Constitution. The founders did not create the United States so that some solitary 29-year-old could make unilateral decisions about what should be exposed.

Oh yes, I forgot

The Founders created the Constitution so government could look into every facet of our lives without even the flimsiest evidence of probable cause.
You have to be a charlatan to propose such a notion and an ignoramus to believe it.

The Only Reason To Read

A NYT columnist is for comic relief. Think of the Marks Brothers. Groucho (my favorite) is Tom Friedman. He's belly-aching hilarious. Brooks is Gummo (my least favorite). Here he actually castigated Snowden for breaking an oath. Is that a knee-slapper or what? Like every public bloodsucker in this saga took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution was faithful. Hilarious.

I never miss the chance to read one of these jokers (for free of course).

The real problem: reinterpreting rather than rewriting laws

The Fourth Amendment is plainly written. The real problem is that David Brooks and others promote a view that the law cannot be interpreted by the people it governs. They promote the idea that even plain meaning is unreliable because laws interact and only an expert can interpret the meaning of the law in an interactive, evolving system. The net result is Mr. Brooks promotes an antisocial vision where the letter of the law is meaningless. Why? because they will do anything to rationalize into existence new powers for the government, even when no new laws are passed.

A simple reading of the fourth amendment is all that is needed:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Very circular logic

"But Big Brother is not the only danger facing the country. Another is the rising tide of distrust, the corrosive spread of cynicism, the fraying of the social fabric and the rise of people who are so individualistic in their outlook that they have no real understanding of how to knit others together and look after the common good."

It's Big Brother who is "raising the tide" of distrust, and those he attacks are actually the only ones striving for the "common good" of all Americans.

If the social fabric is one of slavery and servitude, shouldn't it be frayed? Doesn't the Constitution suggest we do just that?

A real Hobbes fan who wants only the intelligentsia to rule, and they are never wrong. Brooks can keep his dystopia.

I wanted to write this in the comments but they're closed now.

Mr. Brooks, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Brooks is the worst

He used to make me sick when he was on the PBS Newshour, he is just the lowest of the low and that really takes some doing in our corrupt media.

Yuck

I couldn't even make it past the first paragraph.

Lame. Incredibly lame.

That's all I can say right now.

I'm torn between addressing this here & now, and finishing the work that I didn't finish earlier today.

David Brooks is notorious for

David Brooks is notorious for having insinuated that the Occupy Movement was motivated by "anti Semitism." Even this Jewish guy in the following link, thinks this is absurd. http://jewschool.com/2011/10/12/27119/david-brooks-major-ahole/

I wonder if David Brooks would have taken the

"common good" approach to institutions if Bush was President.
He probably would be crying fascism.
I suppose if its YOUR institution everyone must get in line.

The author appears to be philosophically bankrupt

In a nutshell, he states (not a quote):

"Collectivism is the rule of the day. It's disheartening that the spying collectivism requires is being turned on its head by this man. He's making everything worse by telling the truth. Shame on him."

This author is a tool of the state and writes like an unemployed psychologist.

I keep asking this question online to little response...

"Would somebody give me an example of a government encroachment on civil liberties that would start to give them pause if this doesn't?" They all just give crickets. Somebody coined the terms "Truthers" and "Trusters" in a post a while back and it's especially apropos after recent events. There are going to be two distinct camps dividing up very soon. There has been a grey area that is about to get pretty black and white. Could get ugly. As if it isn't already.

So let me get this straight

"But Big Brother is not the only danger facing the country. Another is the rising tide of distrust, the corrosive spread of cynicism, the fraying of the social fabric and the rise of people who are so individualistic in their outlook that they have no real understanding of how to knit others together and look after the common good.

This is not a danger Snowden is addressing. In fact, he is making everything worse."

The government secretly spies on everyone, Snowden exposes it, people get angry that the government spies on them, distrust of government spreads. Thereofre, Snowden is to blame for distrust of government. Huh?

I believe that was the

I believe that was the biggest pile of crap I have ever read.

No wonders why he works for the New York Times...

On a brief side note, does anyone recognize the psychological generational warfare going on here?

Now the old media is demonizing 20 and 30 something's...because they don't trust nor watch their crap!

Never be afraid to ask simple questions.

yes, I did see that too & struck me as

Brooks is engaging in "generational warfare" by demonising those who question authority and also engaged in "class warfare" by mocking people who don't finish high school ect.
Many bright people don't finish high school b/c they're BORED--
What a snob --
