map of the ancient world

In 1929, a group of historians found an amazing map drawn on a gazelle skin.

Research showed that it was a genuine document drawn in 1513 by Piri Reis, a famous admiral of the Turkish fleet in the sixteenth century.

what makes this map special,is it shows the arctic circle unfrozen
edited for facts or rather, the lack of them, thanks DPer's
this begs a couple of questions, doesn't it?
like when was it created? if it indeed shows grass and trees, where it is frozen
who used this map,and for what purpose?
how did who ever made it,
is it possible that columbus used this to find the new world?

(Purple) My question here is

(Purple) My question here is how did they manage to all have SUV's back then with limited tech which certainly caused the global warming to melt the ice caps. I mean it makes more sense that ancient civilizations would have SUVs with less paved roads and all but that was before advanced metal working etc. (Purple)

On a serious note, i find it very interesting that there is ample evidence of ancient civilizations with advanced technology and stones that look laser cut and too heavy to be lifted by modern machinery but the scientific community just kind of glances the other way.

We all share this eternally evolving present moment- The past and future only exist as inconsequential mental fabrications.

the scientific community

turns a blind eye to a lot of history
such as jewelry, hand prints and other man made things found in coal
it made me happy to read your comment about lase cut stones
i had forgotten about them, than you
it seems our history is not what it appears
solomons temple, has such huge foundation stones,we have not the tech now to pick them up !!!it does beg the question of HOW ?

Seeing

Is there a way to actually see the map. The image on the link is way to small for me to see. Not that this seems like a real mystery or anything. It's just a cool old map, not necessarily showing anything that is being suggested.

here is a different photo

of the same map.
if you can't blow it up,try cont/plus sign

Columbus

Columbus got a government grant to go to China. He headed out in the wrong direction, landed in the Caribbean, thought he was in India, and never admitted his mistake.

i became interested in old maps
upon seeing a congressional map from the 30's
this map was set up in zones, with a certain group owning a zone
america was rolled into south america, including canada and AK
there were about 7 zones in all
what i found strange about this map,was the land of israel already on it,this was before it was founded, then i find an article
about the rothschilds, their claim is they created it in the late 1800's,and why they did it
i have been searching for that one map for over a yr now,it was in my book marks ( i did say was) as it is gone now,and for the life of me,i cannot find it online
my search goes on
sorry, thank you for that youtube link :)

Grahm Hancock Book Update

Anyone who read Fingerprints of the Gods by Hancock or Hapgoods original Ancient Mariners book will want to be on the lookout for a re-write and update about this map.

I heard Hancock is going to update and re-release Fingerprints of the Gods.

It would be interesting if he addresses some of the debunking stuff in the re-print.

Right now I lean towards the map being legit based on elevation details implied by the maps vs our detailed depth charts of today. i.e. as we see more of what is covered underwater the map should become more accurate over time. Or reveal its flaws.

"Underworld" was another fascinating book by G.H.

Deals with underwater (currently) evidence of ancient civilizations.

Read the first book so I followed up with the one about the Sphinx.

I do not know...

or care what your point about the map is, but you are falling for a public school lie, that I think is important to correct. Certainly, if you are using it as a basis for other theories.

No one believed the earth was flat. At least outside of a very few, probably inbred, dumb hicks who didn't know how to spell their own names. It was NOT, nor has it EVER been a commonly held belief by anyone with an IQ north of 50.

The myth was a lie made up in a work of fiction. But it doesn't stop our public schools from teaching the lie as fact.

Here's another source

6, July, 1960 Subject: Admiral Piri Reis Map
TO: Prof. Charles H. Hapgood
Keene College Keene, New Hampshire

Dear Professor Hapgood,
Your request of evaluation of certain unusual features of the Piri Reis map of 1513 by this organization has been reviewed.
The claim that the lower part of the map portrays the Princess Martha Coast of Queen Maud Land, Antarctic, and the Palmer Peninsular, is reasonable. We find that this is the most logical and in all probability the correct interpretation of the map.
The geographical detail shown in the lower part of the map agrees very remarkably with the results of the seismic profile made across the top of the ice-cap by the Swedish-British Antarctic Expedition of 1949.
This indicates the coastline had been mapped before it was covered by the ice-cap.
The ice-cap in this region is now about a mile thick.
We have no idea how the data on this map can be reconciled with the supposed state of geographical knowledge in 1513.

Harold Z. Ohlmeyer Lt. Colonel, USAF Commander

Right.....

Because we have gained zero knowledge in fifty years and no one has looked at or studied the map since 1960.

And...an Air Force officer? An air force team in 1960 does not trump a modern cartography study. Sorry...it just doesn't.

"In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot."--Mark Twain

where is the modern cartography study?

and who did it?

Piri Reis map debunked:

http://www.uwgb.edu/dutchs/PSEUDOSC/PiriRies.HTM

"You underestimate the character of man." | "So be off now, and set about it." | Up for a game?

Unbunked

A U.S. Navy cartographer, engineer and ancient-map specialist--Captain Arlington H. Mallery -- had come across a copy of the map, studied it and said publicly that the map seemed to show Antarctica -- unknown at the time the map was drawn -- and that, furthermore, the coast seemed to have been mapped at a time when it was free of ice, an apparent impossibility. Furthermore, Mallery's opinions had been endorsed by the directors of the astronomical observatories at Boston College and Georgetown University, Daniel Linehan and Francis Heyden.

I'll take the opinions of those chaps over your poorly educated and misinformed Steve Dutch, whoever the hell he is, who overlooks the fact that Piri Reis had to reduce the map and more than likely that skewed some of the azimuthal projections. Beyond his azimuthal argument which I just destroyed, the rest of his views are idle speculation. (ie, "perhaps north america is actually asia)

Did you even read the document you supplied? His arguments make no sense.

The US Air Force also studied and endorsed the Antarctic coast theory of the map. It's actually your own source that is bunk.

deacon's picture

debunked ?

the only thing i saw debunked was ET's in writing that map
so what? the map was created by using older maps,so this means there are older maps, showing what is on this map
and if this has been debunked, then why wasn't this post pulled like the last one,you know without an explanation?
now back to the modbox,to see if i got an answer back about the other one

Actually, contrary to popular

Actually, contrary to popular belief, they did not all think the world was flat.
