Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Dumped!: Rouhani Wins Iran Presidential Election

15 June 2013 Last updated at 15:50 ET

Reformist-backed cleric Hassan Rouhani has won Iran's presidential election, securing just over 50% of the vote and so avoiding the need for a run-off.

Crowds gathered in Tehran to hail Mr Rouhani, who said he had achieved a "victory of moderation over extremism".

Some 72.2% of the 50 million eligible Iranian voters cast ballots to choose the successor to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The US said it was "ready to engage directly" with Iran over its disputed nuclear programme.

Armordinnerjacket

Armordinnerjacket had a big mouth, but he did not go 'round starting wars. The new guy is a "cleric," which is a little scary. But then they say the POI is not very powerful - answers to the ayatollah.

I'm so disappointed.

I just learned how to properly say the guy's name.

witty

I think the guy has been a CIA / Mossad stooge since day one.

Rouhani

They are all insiders. Look up the candidates on so much as Wikipedia and it is telling. Sorry to break it to you. This one knows the Ayatollah personally from Iran's Islamic Revolution days. He has also worked in like every possible defense related department at one time or another. Most of the true reform movement revolutionaries in Iran were disappeared. The strategy of the reformists in Iran is supposedly to open up ties with the west, while also continuing to pursue the nuclear program. We see how well UN-IAEA oversight went for Iraq - oil for food scandal, they had no WMD at all, and before inspectors could complete their never ending inspection to prove a negative (mission impossible), we invaded. The way their elections are run, it looks like our two governments could have a lot in common, though.

This hatred of Ahmadinejad is

This hatred of Ahmadinejad is ridiculous. "Dumped"? He couldn't run for re-election due to term limits, so why the headline on Drudge, "Dumped!"? Anything they can do to make Ahmadinejad look bad they will do, even if it makes no sense. Now, I don't think Ahmadinejad is some great leader, but how is he any worse than Obama? When the next president is elected, will Drudge Report say Obama has been "dumped"? I don't think so.

Who cares? Reality check...he

Who cares? Reality check...he is 13th in line of power...he has no power to change things in Iran..if they even need changing. He is simply yet another mouthpiece for Khameni and from here in the US Khameni hasnt done such a bad job keeping Iran out of external wars...but change? No there will be no change in Iran.

This was a good prediction!

my facebook has been filled up with persian by my Iranian friends haha, using google translator it looks like they're all pretty happy about it (as I knew they would be). someone posted the link to the whitehouse statement, I didn't have the heart to tell them the statement would give me hope for peace if it weren't for the fact that we've just doubled down on a proxy war with Iran in Syria... but hey, maybe we'll be able to hold back on direct war with them a bit longer if Rohani can help turn the direction around.

anyway, looks like this was a good prediction:
