OK State GOP Chairman Implies Liberty is Doing What You Are Told, DPer Now Vice Chair of Cherokee Co. GOP Responds

My friend, the DPs very own QFish, is the Vice Chair of the Cherokee County Republican Party in Oklahoma. Apparently, the OK GOP State Chairman has been on a "Redefining Liberty" Tour.

Q offers her take to the Chairman's recent comments regarding liberty:

OK GOP Chairman, Dave Weston, hosted a Townhall in Cherokee County yesterday. We thank him for coming out to Cherokee County as part of his 77 county tour.

Dave Weston spoke at the beginning of June at the District 2 GOP Meeting. At this meeting he said the following, "There are a lot of people pushing the wrong kind of Liberty in our State. Liberty is not doing what you want. It is doing what you should."

That quote above left me kind of flabbergasted. It’s as if someone hasn’t read the dictionary. So, because I had not met Mr. Weston yet, I wanted to go to the Townhall and meet him for myself and see what he had to say.

I was not surprised, but I was incredibly disgusted as I sat and listened to Chairman Weston when he started his speech on Thursday and laid out his basis for everything:

"True freedom is doing what you ought to do. False freedom is doing what you want to do."

I personally like saying, "Liberty is NOT 'doing whatever you want to do.' It is, 'NOT having to do what you don't want to do.'"

How do you define liberty?

With power comes responsibility

Liberty is being aware and accepting the consequences of our actions, as we are at liberty to do so.

That being said, we should do what's right, but different people think different things are right for them.

I guess I've been out of the loop, haven't heard from qfish since they stopped doing the show awhile back, glad to hear your doing well.

:)

Yes, we are doing well. Just busy with life and kind of took a small step back from politics and just involved a bit now since we won the county offices :). If you follow our county blog, I post on there fairy often.

I do not know the full context

But my understanding of liberty is that Liberty can only exist when people have personal responsibility, and at times that will include doing what we should instead of what we want. Frankly if we took personal responsibility for a lot of things as a people we would have to let a lot of government workers go because we would not need them, we can take care of ourselves.

Happiness is to want to do

Happiness is to want to do what you ought to do.

It is not to do what you ought to do, even though you don't want to.

And it is not to do what you want to do, even though you ought not to.

Liberty is the freedom to pursue happiness with your life.

Liberty is

the people telling the Government what to do not the Government telling the people what to do.

If the context of the GOP chair was...

...you should do what the GOP party says you should do, or what the gov't says you should do, then he is obviously a dictator, a control freak.

And if Fish is saying true freedom is doing what you want, then that is equally false and misled.

Freedom is NOT doing what you want to do, but rather doing things that will enlarge freedom. The application of this principle is how you understand what freedom is, as follows:

Are you more or less free if you CHOOSE to:

1) watch porn
2) take addictive drugs
3) do anything addictive (like eat sugar, drink coffee, or anything that might be addictive?
4) willfully "sin" or go against what you KNOW to be God's will?

That covers most of what I'm talking about.

I've found that there are Libertarians who would argue, with their agenda quite obvious to all, that you are free even if you do any of the things I listed above, EVEN if you watch porn, EVEN if you take addictive drugs, or eat additive foods, etc.

The immature soul wants "to be free," not understanding that living true principles makes us free.

The non-aggression principle applies here as well, but I don't have time to explain it, but most of you DP readers already know it.

Suffice it to say that Fish may be wrong here, and the GOP Chair may be right. The answer lies in context.

I'll assume Fish is right (mainly because she's a DP'er), and the GOP is a collectivist of some degree, but we can't know until looking at the true context.

Let me end with this quote: "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” That sums up what Liberty is. Is there Liberty where there is addiction? Is there Liberty where there is wrong-doing? And of course, there is no Liberty when one FORCES another to do their version of "good." You cannot force one to believe in God, or do keep a particular commandment.

But you can force somebody to cease being aggressive towards you, who violates the non-aggression principle.

One final thought. What might be illegal at the federal level, might be legal at the local level. For example, the Fed gov't has no legal right, per the 10th Amendment, to do anything not listed in the Constitution, Article 1 Section 8. However, that doesn't mean the states and counties and towns can't pass laws, for example, outlawing child porn, for example.

The Federal gov't cannot outlaw it, nor abortion, but the states CAN. the principle is the power should be kept closer to the people.

Liberty is freedom

Specifically, freedom from coërcion.

This Mr. Weston should realise that there is no moral value in doing what you are supposed to when you have no other choice, no more than there is in doing what you arent supposed to do when you have no other choice.

Liberty is making your own choices without molestation.

"I personally like saying,

"I personally like saying, "Liberty is NOT 'doing whatever you want to do.' It is, 'NOT having to do what you don't want to do.'"

Out of the many different definitions when TRYING to explain one thing, id say, thats a pretty good damn definition of it right there

Gee, I've seen that somewhere before ;)

Freedom is not: doing everything you want to.
Freedom is: not having to do what you don't want to do.

Liberty: Being secure in your

Liberty: Being secure in your life, liberty and property and having these things protected by the rule of law.

It has nothing to do with "doing what you ought to." Not at all. You do whatever the hell you feel like, but you face the music and live with the consequences of your actions. In no way does liberty mean you can violate someone else's life liberty or property without paying the price, nor does it stop you from destroying your own life in any way you choose.

Congrats to Qfish! Stay

Congrats to Qfish!

Stay inside the GOP and win back the republic!

This is a DOUBLE SPEAK re-education tour

We need more boots on the ground to report in and see if this is more than just Oklahoma.

This double speak shit needs to get squashed fast.

Depends who defines "ought"?

If it's God and participation in His church and kingdom is voluntary, I completely agree.

Otherwise, go **** yourself. OI!
