The Democrats were Right about the Patriot Act. We Should have Listened. I'm Sorry.

I admit, I didn't pay attention at the time, nor was politically active when the Patriot Act was being passed.

I'm Sorry.

Maybe we should have an Act of Congress making it illegal to mis-name Acts of Congress that are deliberately psychologically misleading in the naming of them.

Here's the full spectrum of ideas for naming and passing bills-

Give them some love for making it simple: Downsize DC!

They include: the Read the Bills Act, the Enumerated Powers Act, the Write The Laws Act ,and the One Subject At a Time Act.

If I'm not mistaken

Doesn't the patriot act have a sun shine clause that has to be renewed every couple of years? Please correct me if I'm wrong. If I'm correct then we need to put pressure on the government not to renew next round.

every 5 years

It should be repealed today.

so,when did you figure it out?

everything the fed gov does or says, is the opposite of what it means or says
almost like a mirror image of the truth
what i mean is, if you could have a mirror image, but read it like the words weren't backwards in the mirror, then it would read the right way
you'd just read from the right to the left, instead of right to left
there,i think i put it right

If we deny truth before your very eyes, then the rest of what we have to say,is of little consequence

I follow the money and I see

I follow the money and I see the government can't be trusted. The Carlyle Group has ownership in Booz Allen, and the kleptocrats are making billions of taxpayer dollars on these government spying contracts.

I remember liberal groups

I remember liberal groups protesting the Patriot Act. Didn't think much of it at the time.

All the democrats I know

All the democrats I know voted for the Patriot Act or didn't even know what it was. Earlier forms of the "Patriot" act were discussed in the 90's by both sides if I'm not mistaken..

pretty sure 90%+ of dems voted for the patriot act

y'all should have listened to us libertarians.

It's not like there was much opposition Michael;

The senate voted 98-1, the sole nay vote being Russ Feingold. (2001)

The congress wasn't much better, only 62 votes against. Notables include Ron Paul of course, Dennis Kucinich, Bernie Sanders, Barney Frank.

A pro-Patriot Act vote which surprised me: James Traficant.

I was just a working stiff at

I was just a working stiff at the time. Watched the Twin Towers being brought down on TV, and never knew anything of Alex Jones and conspiracy theories. At least I followed the dot-com bubble and started blogging around 2004, when I became aware of what was really going on.

I was voicing opposition at the time

I might have even written a letter to the editor. We were traitors or some such. My Representative did vote no though. But both senators voted yes. The Democratic Senator reversed his vote when it was extended though.

The whole thing was surreal.

I became quite skeptical

After 'freedom fries', the Dixie Chicks fiasco and the Valerie Plame affair.

It became quite obvious to me that the MSM was being used as a tool by the GWB White House to attack any and all opposition to the Iraq war.

It was like Paul Wolfowitz and Dick Cheney were working behind the scenes feeding the news to the news media.

I knew when...

the talking heads were going on about 'limiting freedoms' while folks were still hopping out of windows.
