Michael Hastings dead at 33

Heart-wrenching news. Liberty ally and fierce military-establishment adversary Michael Hastings died in a car accident this morning in Los Angeles.

He was only 33.

His journalistic contributions were many and significant. Personally, I immediately thought of this interview he did on Morning Joe, in which he invokes his support of Ron Paul:

He will be sorely missed.

RIP.

WOW thread should be updated with this:

Hastings' car smashed into a tree and burst into flames early Tuesday morning near Melrose and Highland avenues, according to family and friends. It appears he was driving at a high rate of speed, and at the scene of the crash, there were no skid marks.

Suspicion-meter just went from 5.0 to 9.9

Even Scooby-doo could solve this mystery...but from the LAPD I expect a long investigation, long enough until people forget who he is.

Automotive Writer on Hastings Crash: Fire Doesn't Happen Like That

Jack Baruth writes at The Truth About Cars about the car crash that killed Michael Hastings, be sure to view the video of the fire:
The definitive video of the incident can be found here. It features everything you’d want in a crash story, including:

The ejected motor and transmission

Video of the car burning with the fury of a thousand suns[...]

I’m not here to speak ill of the dead. I’m here to state that I’ve seen dozens of cars hit walls and stuff at high speeds and the number of them that I have observed to eject their powertrains and immediately catch massive fire is, um, ah, zero. Modern cars are very good at not catching fire in accidents. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which is an evolutionary design from a company known for sweating the safety details over and above the Euro NCAP requirements, should be leading the pack in the not-catching-on-fire category.

Nor is the C-Class known for sudden veering out of control into trees and whatnot. My father’s been running a C350 of that generation around Hilton Head for a while and if anybody could make a C-Class veer into a palm tree without warning it would be him.

It's amazing that the UK

It's amazing that the UK police never released the name of the guy who crashed into Andrew Maguire.

How does a person crash a car into several other cars, flee, and then is chased by police helicopters and arrested but no name ever released?

Hasting told the truth about

the generals.

Journalist Michael Hastings died in a mysterious car crash on 19 June 2013.

Hastings was a critic of the Pentagon generals.

In 2010, Michael Hastings described General Stanley McChrystal's staff as "a handpicked collection of killers, spies, ... political operators and outright maniacs."

McChrystal was sacked by Obama in 2010.

I'm a big conspiracy theorist

I'm a big conspiracy theorist (a conspiracy is when any two or more people carry out a crime) but I think from what I've seen of the car burning that there was no bomb type explosion in this case. It looks like a vary hard impact into a steel power pole about 16" in diameter which is a very strong pole. If a car were to impact that pole at 60 plus mph, it would disintegrate and PERHAPS result in the engine and transmission separating from the carnage and tumbling some distance.

That said, ALL modern cars are "fly-by-wire" which means that there is no direct connection to the engine or even real "feedback" from the steering or brakes. It would be very simple for some very powerful bad guys to "reprogram" the engine control computer to do something crazy like go into full acceleration at 4:31 am on any given day. Or they could reprogram any other time/date/input trigger. It's possible they could even reprogram it so that the engine kill switch will not turn off the engine or the transmission selector will not shift into neutral.

Although I don't see that a bomb was used, that doesn't mean that foul play was not involved. RIP Michael.

Beware the cult of "government"...

Wow Christian - that is interesting. You said...

"It would be very simple for some very powerful bad guys to "reprogram" the engine control computer to do something crazy like go into full acceleration at 4:31 am on any given day."

That would take real bad guys with a lot of knowledge.

Then again - I'm sure the CIA/FBI is full of those types.

Personally, I am not taking a stance...

Cars are engineered to withstand 60+mph impacts and -collapse- the front end to absorb the force without turning the driver/passenger into a pancake.

I'm thankful for the engineering because it saved my life once.

So given that, I am less inclined to believe the engine "separated" from the car. But I don't know enough about that side of it to state for a fact that the engine could or could not have done so from enough of an impact. Sounds like a job for google later.

how many people will see this

and say to themselves, yes they blow up like that,i saw it in the movies
Why,just last night on little house,a wagon went over a cliff, and it blew up
on impact,so yeah,it's possible !!
cuz you know,if it happens in the movies,it happens in real life too

You are correct...

It's a sad state, because I also would fully expect the news to report the same.... :(

Cars don't explode.

http://automotivethinker.com/general/cars-just-dont-explode/

Bombs do.

And cars are engineered to collapse for safety to absorb impact, not throw major structural parts 100 feet away.

The Philosophy Of Liberty -

Engine found 100 feet from the accident?

And they call it an accident? Seriously? This really makes me very, very sad. I read his book and was so impressed with it and I liked him. He is the age of my sons and another hero. Very, very tragic.

Does anyone really think this was an "accident?"

The CIA can smear stuff on your steering wheel which gets into your system through the skin and can mimic a heart attack or some other health issue which in turn causes the driver to lose control of a vehicle.

Or was it a remote controlled accelerator.

They say the guy lived in a constant state of fear and paranoia.

Blessed are the courageous truth-tellers.

This man is in heaven.

-Ron Paul

Hard to say the cause, from my observation:

Notice the debris field at 57 seconds on the NBC coverage, is to the passenger side of the vehicle, after it struck the tree.

The kinetic motion of the vehicle would normally cause parts of the vehicle to be projected forward of the vehicle after it struck an object.

Therefore that debris field was caused by the explosion. Obviously the explosion did not take place immediately at the time of impact, but at an unknown quantity of time thereafter.

Very suspicious in my opinion. He obviously was a good friend of Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow and Jeremy Scahill based on his tweets. Scahill is behind the movie "Dirty Wars", definitely on my top ten 'want to see' list.

Rest in Peace Michael Hastings, G_d be with you.

I honestly think that TV/Movies/News have turned the entire country into 3rd graders when it comes to physics and science. (That is not a slight towards you, I am just expressing disgust with what those mediums do to us as a society).

Please pass it on.

They do when a fire gets to the gas tank

I've seen it a couple of times. I don't believe they explode on impact though!

No they don't.

They can catch fire. It is literally impossible for a car to explode. The engineering is all wrong.

If enough vapor enters the air and ignites "just right", it MIGHT produce a "flash" fireball with NO force.

So, I find it interesting that you claim to have seen the impossible.

I watched one of the clips.

There was no explosion. Only a car fire.

So if you want to make a point, narrow it down to the actual video that you think shows what you intend to. I am not going to waste my time watching all three videos just to prove what I already know.

Cars do not explode.

The Philosophy Of Liberty -

Watch the other two too

they ALL go boom! You didn't watch it if you didn't see and hear the BOOM!

wolfe's picture

The second contains...

What I already mentioned, a fireball, with no force. This is caused by vapor collecting in the air and igniting. It is not an explosion and there is no force behind it. It is also fairly rare as it requires a non ignited hole in the gas tank to leak vapors over a lengthier period of time and to finally ignite while it is gathered.

Notice that in the video following, not a single part of the car had changed locations. That is not an explosion.

So you first video was a car fire.
Your second video was a car fire with a fairly rare fireball.

I am not going to bother watching the third. Why don't you read the link I provided, or do your own google. What you claim is not possible.

The Philosophy Of Liberty -
http://www.thephilosophyofliberty.com/

I did read the link

And all of the videos I showed you the car went BOOM! I didn't argue force or any of your other mumbo jumbo, all I said was they do explode, INCLUDING the first one.

Do you stand with Rand too?

Very suspicious.....neighbor said it sounded like a bomb....has anybody ever heard of an engine flying out of a car like that before?
