Weekend Watching: The Lives of Others

In light of recent developments, the 2006 classic, The Lives of Others is worth revisiting.

Storyline (from IMDB): In the early 1980s, Georg Dreyman (a successful dramatist) and his longtime companion Christa-Maria Sieland (a popular actress), were huge intellectual stars in (former) East Germany, although they secretly don't always toe the party line. One day, the Minister of Culture becomes interested in Christa, so the secret service agent Wiesler is instructed to observe and sound out the couple, but their life fascinates him more and more.

You can stream it instantly from Amazon, and it looks like it is also available on Netflix. It may also be available for free somewhere online. Of course, there is always your local video shop, if there are any left your area. (In Cambridge, we still have Hollywood Express which is like walking back in time, to the 1980's.)

Please post your comments & reflections below. My recollection is that it was an excellent film, and best of all it has a happy ending. We need to keep our spirits up, and remember that people throughout history have endured worse than us, and made it though to the other sie.

I will watch this

This weekend. It looks awesome. The first thought that came to my mind was the time is ripe to do an American version of 1984.

I can't remember the last time I walked into a video store!!
