What's Freedom?

Friends of Liberty,

I wanna start by saying it's been awhile since I have written a comment on the DP, or even logged in for that matter, however, I still come here everyday for my intellectual sustenance. Keep up the good work team.

Now...What is freedom? Let's start with perception.

I had this one very intriguing professor in college. He started the semester with this sentence.

Time flies.

He asked what that meant to us. Of course the answers were various things about life flying by quickly.

Then he pointed out that it all depends on perception. What if time was the VERB and flies were the NOUN?

Then the sentence takes on an entirely different meaning.

I wanted point out that what you hear over and over again, without ever listening to the other point of view, without taking that journey of constructive criticism, then you will only perceive what you have been told over, and over, and over again.

So, we need to keep our heads on a swivel and actively search for TRUTH and keep news, the facts, and life in general in Context.

As far as the perception of freedom goes, some feel free when they can say "f*!k the world", then throw up the middle finger. They want to live for themselves to do what feels good and be wild...let loose and live...go where they want to go and do what they want to do.

Others say they only have freedom when they have discipline over their cravings, vices, impulses and knowledge. The freedom to overcome your weaknesses and imbedded bias' and perceptions and truly be "you".

I say you only have freedom when you can control yourself, have discipline. Because until you do, I don't know how you could ever expect to rebel against a system of vices, lies, addiction, prejudice, greed and hate.

Once you open up to knowledge and understand what wisdom is, empty your mind to make room for something new that could be the truth, then you are free.

Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils.

With much love,

PL

It's hard not to be a menace to society when half the population is happy on their knees. - unknown

Freedom is the ability to act without coercion from outside...

influences.

One can be in the wrong (according to whatever standard) and choose to take some particular action. As long as that action does not harm another individual, it is no one else's business, and that person is free to engage in that action.

That's exactly how I define

That's exactly how I define liberty. Whether technically correct or not. I always say it's the ability to undertake ANY action as long as it doesn't harm others' life or property. Like drugs. I don't care what drugs you do, and if they are legal. You may do whatever drugs you want, but only if you don't harm others while doing it, this includes if it completely ruins your parenting skill, which changes the entire life of the child, or ends it.

But I agree with that definition.

I suppose my whole point is that in order to be free of the system, you must first be free from yourself, only then can you really seek what freedom is, and that's probably why we are in the shape we are in as a nation right now.
