Only a few centuries ago it was thought that this planet we all live on was the centre of the universe. The moon, the sun, the planets and all the stars circled round our globe.
In July 1633, when Galileo Galilei questioned this belief, he was threatened with torture and sentenced to formal imprisonment at the pleasure of the Inquisition. His books were banned and he was later placed under house arrest, to keep him quiet till his death nine years later in 1642.
Nowadays no one doubts Galileo’s findings. Our globe is not the central pivot point of the universe. We are simply a planet orbiting around a star, the only place we know with conditions exactly balanced to support a complex web of life. Our planet is on the outer edge of the Milky Way, one of many billions of galaxies each containing many billions of stars like our own sun.
On the human front, however, little has changed. Harsh treatment is often inflicted on brave individuals speaking out and exposing the truth.
Western democracies are no longer democratic or free.
Intelligence agencies with secret agendas exercise modern-day inquisitons, and suppress information too secret and sensitive for the eyes and ears of their people and even their own governments.
Galileo was but one of many examples of individuals who have been persecuted for seeking and speaking the truth.
In the United States, the Patriot Act has taken away many of the freedoms of its people. This Act has become the premier weapon to attack whistleblowers and dissidents who have shown great courage.
