Liberty Iowa Essay Contest Winner "Why I Support the Liberty Movement"

Liberty Iowa was formed during the 2012 campaign to help Dr. Paul win Iowa (which we did, woohoo!). From there it has stayed active locally to help promote state liberty candidates.

Recently it held a liberty writing contest asking why their liberty activists support this movement. This essay was the winner.

"Why I Support the Liberty Movement"

To answer the question “why I support the Liberty Movement?” is to summarize my entire adult life. In 2009 I graduated from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota with my Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. As I left St. Thomas, I had a deep-rooted desire to work in a scientific field, help those in need, and be in a position where I could teach others. Based upon these criteria, the perfect vocation was a career in as a physician. I had the qualifications, the drive, and the work ethic to be accepted into medical school, yet one thing was holding me back: the federal government.

In 2010, under a Democrat-controlled Congress, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act – more commonly called ObamaCare – into law. This legislative monstrosity was passed mere months after I had been accepted into medical school. The issue at hand was if I could seriously consider accepting the significant cost of medical school tuition when there was absolutely no certainty of working conditions, compensation, autonomy, or the existence of the Doctor-Patient relationship. After all, at the time ObamaCare was signed into law no one knew what was in it, least of all Nancy Pelosi.
