Update: Snowden Applies for Political Asylum in Russia, Issues Statement

Statement from Edward Snowden in Moscow
Monday July 1, 21:40 UTC

One week ago I left Hong Kong after it became clear that my freedom and safety were under threat for revealing the truth. My continued liberty has been owed to the efforts of friends new and old, family, and others who I have never met and probably never will. I trusted them with my life and they returned that trust with a faith in me for which I will always be thankful.

Snowden Requests Russian Political Asylum
07/01/2013 12:41 -0400
While hardly coming as news to anyone who could have read the tea leaves as soon as Snowden boarded the plane from Hong Kong to Moscow, the flashing red headline that the NSA whistleblower has just applied to be Depardieu's neighbor, has just escalated the great US foreign policy snafu that started a month ago with the NSA spying revelations, and has since developed into a huge scandal involving Europe, Russia, China, Hong Kong, and virtually every other country (not to mention US citizens) that the US government is spying on.

SNOWDEN ASKS FOR RUSSIAN POLITICAL ASYLUM: IMMIGRATION OFFICIAL
SNOWDEN ASYLUM APPLICATION RECEIVED YESTERDAY: RUSSIAN OFFICIAL

And with Putin saying there is no chance he will return Snowden to the US, in response to Obama's demands, suddenly the balance of power shifts to Russia's favor (which by now it is almost certain, knows everything that Snowden does).

Ball is now in Putin's court. Just where he likes it.

ABKHAZIA, Edward! Apply to ABKHAZIA! Daily flights to Sukhum!

ABKHAZIA, Edward! Apply to ABKHAZIA! There are daily flights to Sukhum from Moscow.

I guarantee they'll hand-deliver an Abkhazian passport just to get some publicity. The Winter Olympics are coming to Sochi and next-door Abkhazia wants to cash in on the tourists. This would help them do it!

Obama isn't smart enough to be the hero

Once the cat was out of the bag, Obama should have given Snowden a whistleblower medal and immunity from prosecution, got him back here in the good ol' USA, had him help clean up the security leaks and unconstitutional activities and taken the high road with the Civil Libertarians.

Instead, Obama now has 4 million top security employees that can sympathize with Snowden that will never, ever, ever blow the whistle on any criminal activity. The intelligence community will become more and more diabolical.

It's a requirement for creating the very effective Gestapo type of security apparatus.

THESE REPORTS ARE DISINFO

Russian Media disputes the claims that #Snowden applied for Asylum:

http://rt.com/news/russia-russian-asylum-snowden-493/

FOX, MSNBC, CNN, etc are all just propaganda channels which attempt to frame every story.

DON'T BELIEVE THE LIES.

At their inceptions, the #Liberty, #OccupyWallStreet and #TeaParty movements all had the same basic goal... What happened?

They are agents of misinformation..

I think what they are interpreting as an application for asylum is actually the list of 15 countries he listed as options...and Russia is probably on the list.

Pardon me if this is not

Pardon me if this is not accurate, but did not Snowden give his stash of secrets to the Guardian and the Post? Who's to say he's got another copy on his body? Be kinda stupid for a whistle blowing patriot (as I would describe him) to go traipsing around with TNT type info in his pocket. I do not think he is the one to disseminate any more data, the newspapers, if they so chose, are.

This is interesting from the LA Times...

Russia can provide Snowden with refugee-status papers...so he can leave...

http://www.latimes.com/news/world/worldnow/la-fg-wn-edward-s...

“In the given circumstances, Russia has two workable options: Firstly is to provide Snowden with some refugee-status papers so that he could buy a ticket and leave for some other country, or secondly to grant him political asylum,” Kabanov said in an interview with The Times.

“Snowden's actions were motivated by a desire to protect human rights and freedoms and now many rights activists in Russia are talking about him as a human rights advocate who deserves to be granted asylum, although this measure is fraught with some political inconveniences for Russia,” he said.

I agree with almost everyone...Edward

is being allowed to test his options. That part is good. I hope he is protected by the Russians at the airport.

If Edward has really DAMAGING evidence against individual politicians that have blatantly lied to the public, if he has damming evidence that the FEDERL RESERVE has been colluding with our politicians, and/or if he has evidence that will show the WHouse is betraying the public, THEN, this is critical information, and I'd like it released.

PUTIN needs to relax. This only makes HIM look good...

Sorry, but everytime i hear

Sorry, but everytime i hear of Snowdens global trek, this song comes to mind :)

The wide wide wanderer

From The Guardian:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/01/putin-snowden-re...

Snowden met Russian diplomats on Monday morning and handed them a list of 15 countries where he would like to apply for political asylum, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing an unnamed source in the foreign ministry.

...

Putin appeared to leave himself some latitude, noting that Snowden would be unlikely to meet his conditions for staying in Russia.

"Considering that he considers himself a human rights activist and a fighter for human rights, he probably doesn't plan to stop this work, so he should choose a host country and head there," Putin said. "When this will happen I, unfortunately, do not know."

Putin, speaking at a press conference after a meeting of gas exporting countries, reiterated that Russia would not extradite Snowden to the US. "Russia never gives anyone up and doesn't plan to give anyone up. And no one has ever given us anyone."

...
Several MPs said they would nominate Snowden for a Nobel peace prize. The overtures to Snowden, charged under espionage laws in the US, come as US-Russia relations plummet to cold war lows.

"Several MPs said they would

"Several MPs said they would nominate Snowden for a Nobel peace prize."

That would add legitimacy to the prize once again.

:)

:)

Snowden has wound up in a tough position, for now it seems.

The main players so far, China and Russia don't want to have to deal with a diplomatic shit storm.

The best outcome I can imagine is for him to turn up in Iceland.

The worst is that he never turns up anywhere. But this is the one that solves the super powers problems of having to deal with him.

That should buy Snowden a

That should buy Snowden a couple more weeks in Russia so he can continue controlling the narrative. Can we have a ticker tape parade for him when he comes home?

That's what I think...

per the above Guardian article: he has provided the Russians with a list of 15 countries he would like to receive asylum from....maybe by doing this, the Russians can help get him there. I really don't think he wants to end up in Russia, but he is going to get hammered now from the press and neocons.

Well Hell, that's in for Edward Scissorhands....

Teaming up with the Russian Government earns him an official black ball from the U.S. People. It doesn't matter if he's helped them or not, sold our secrets or not, or done anything wrong or not.

I sincerely thought he was a hero and he might be but the American people will never go for him now.

I hate to say it, but Snowden looks more and more like a Lee Oswald / Tamerlan Tsarnaev type of character every day.

The US has chased Edward

The US has chased Edward Snowden right to the Russians. Why would the US revoke his passport only to keep him with in Putin's reach? This doesn't seem to be a very well conceived plan on the part of the US.

And the American people know a hero. If he wanted money, he could have sold the documents for a millions of dollars. But, he hasn't. If he wanted fame, he could have had an interview with any talk show or publication. But he has only given his story to Glen Greenwald. He has foresaken wealth and comfort and safety to inform people across the world that their privacy is at risk.

No.7's picture

Most people already thought he was a traitor because TV said so

This just confirms that for 80+% of America.

Playing buddy with Russia isn't going to get anyone support in America, no matter who you are or what you did.

I hear what you are saying.

I hear what you are saying. American's don't want to see their heros to seek asylum from Russia. I think the last I read, 50 percent of those polled said that they thought Snowden had done the right thing, and 34 percent said he had done the wrong thing. But, most importantly, 55 percent polled felt collecting and analyzing phone records is not justified or necessary in fighting terrorism.

Snowden's Worst Fear Being Realized

His revelations on behalf of his fellow Americans don't appear to be sparking enough outrage to result in the policy changes he was hoping for. If Americans continue to embrace the surveillance state then I doubt he'll give much of a s*** about his public image here.

No.7's picture

Sucking up to Russia is ensuring his worst fear will come true

This is a dealbreaker for 80+% of the American people. I would think that Snowden realizes that...

Idk what the hell to think about this right now. I do know that I don't like it.

Trouble is... Snowden didn't

Trouble is... Snowden didn't choose Russia for himself. The United States chose it for him by invalidating his passport. The black ball goes to the US government.

No.7's picture

I agree but you know the average person isn't going for that

He might as well have asked the KKK for protection. He just made his own worst fear come true.

I thought this was an American rEVOLution. Not a Russian/American takedown of the U.S. Government.

I trust Obama more than China or Russia's Governments

UN-PHUCKING-REAL

If he goes to Russia.. he is a traitor. Im going to catch heat for this... but its the truth.

If he gave our enemies information then he should be found, arrested, taken to trial and receive the fullest penalty of law.

Just because you do something right, does not excuse bad behavior.

As I said in another

As I said in another comment... the US put him there by cancelling his passport. It was supposed to be a stop, not a destination.

Oh... and even if he were working directly with the Russian government (which I very sincerely doubt), he -still- wouldn't be a traitor. One is only a traitor if one works with the enemies of the US. An enemy is defined as a country against which war has been declared. You not liking Russia is not enough to meet the legal requirements that they be defined as an enemy.

How, exactly?

You know the Cold War has been over for several decades at this point, yes?

Please don't take this as me 'trusting' the Russian gov, but frankly, they aren't the ones going around the globe murdering people, poisoning the air and land while stealing resources that are used to build weapons that are used to murder people around the globe...and so on the cycle goes.

The only traitors I see are the rats in our own gov who have basically spent decades taking turns wiping each other's asses with the Bill of Rights while forever lying to the very people they're supposed to represent.

A signature used to be here!

Snowden is a political atheist. He only wants truth in govt.

The most important word in your post is "if." He hasn't done anything against anyone yet except tyranny.

I agree 100%!!!

Many a man will spill the beans once a gun is to their head.. Im not professing to know what is going on, but I bet the Russians know a ton of ways to skin that cat.
