Statement from Edward Snowden in Moscow - July 1, 2013

Via Wikileaks:

One week ago I left Hong Kong after it became clear that my freedom and safety were under threat for revealing the truth. My continued liberty has been owed to the efforts of friends new and old, family, and others who I have never met and probably never will. I trusted them with my life and they returned that trust with a faith in me for which I will always be thankful.

On Thursday, President Obama declared before the world that he would not permit any diplomatic "wheeling and dealing" over my case. Yet now it is being reported that after promising not to do so, the President ordered his Vice President to pressure the leaders of nations from which I have requested protection to deny my asylum petitions.

This kind of deception from a world leader is not justice, and neither is the extralegal penalty of exile. These are the old, bad tools of political aggression. Their purpose is to frighten, not me, but those who would come after me.

For decades the United States of America has been one of the strongest defenders of the human right to seek asylum. Sadly, this right, laid out and voted for by the U.S. in Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, is now being rejected by the current government of my country. The Obama administration has now adopted the strategy of using citizenship as a weapon. Although I am convicted of nothing, it has unilaterally revoked my passport, leaving me a stateless person. Without any judicial order, the administration now seeks to stop me exercising a basic right. A right that belongs to everybody. The right to seek asylum.

In the end the Obama administration is not afraid of whistleblowers like me, Bradley Manning or Thomas Drake. We are stateless, imprisoned, or powerless. No, the Obama administration is afraid of you. It is afraid of an informed, angry public demanding the constitutional government it was promised — and it should be.

I am unbowed in my convictions and impressed at the efforts taken by so many.

For Edward Snowden

Keep about the work that God has given you to do. Do not flinch because the lion roars. Do not stop to stone the devil's dogs. Do not fool away your time chasing the the enemies rabbits. Continue about your work!

You may be assaulted, wronged, insulted, slandered, wounded, and rejected. You may be abused by foes, forsaken by friends, and despised and rejected of men. But see to it with steadfast determination, with unfaltering zeal, that you pursue the great purpose of your life and object of your being, until at last you can say: "I have finished the work which I have been tasked to perform."

Thank you for your steadfast courage, your apparent humility, and willingness to stand true to duty though the heavens fall. You are not alone. I believe there are many here who will stand with you--I know of at least one.

World Leader = Deception

Expect nothing less from a "World Leader" than deception. There is no way someone can claim to have leadership over the World or a part of it without great DECEPTION.

Free Peoples do not want, need, nor desire World Leaders. Once you get beyond Community Leaders, you get Central Planning that crowds out the ability for Individuals to Plan for themselves.

Just how many leaders does a Free World need?

How many Parents are there on the Planet?

Do We Trust Him?

I certainly believe the information Snowden leaked but do we trust this guy is about preserving freedom? I'm not so sure. The enemy of my enemy is not always my friend :)

Dear Edward, Thank you for what you did. Hang on! Courage!

Dear Edward,

Thank you for what you did. Hang on! Courage!

We are not going to abandon you.

This is about you, and will never be about them; the end of their time is coming:

Benjamin Constant:

However active the inquisition may be, with whatever care its precautions multiply, enlightened men always retain a thousand ways of making themselves heard. Despotism is to be feared only when it has choked reason in its infancy. Then the former can stop the progress of the latter and keep the human race in a long imbecility. When reason gets on the march, however, it is invincible. Its supporters may perish, but it survives and triumphs. There exists only a moment to proscribe it with advantage. Once this has passed, all efforts are in vain. The intellectual struggle is engaged, thought is separated from power, truth dawns in every mind.

The defenders of freedom encounter then the agreement of the best part of the human race. They plead a noble cause openly to people and are seconded by the wishes of all men of good will. Persecution followed by glory is largely recompensed. He who succumbs confidently bequeaths to his contemporaries the care of defending his memory and completing his work.

See Real my friend...

A minor criticism and one I might well head:

repost this quote to say who said it from the first, otherwise,

it will not be read.

I almost didn't read it as I thought you were quoting from the text.

Just a though but i had to speak it into existence...

Don't feed the pandas. Ever.

Benjamin Constant is a hero role-model more should know

French history isn't as big a priority to most of us as it ought to be; especially because of the difference Benjamin Constant had in setting forth practical ideas, on liberty ideals, in the face of Napoleonic tyranny.

"Constant defied laws which prohibited seditious speech and writing, denied court appeals and required that sentences be carried out within 24 hours. He produced dozens of newspaper articles and pamphlets, and he delivered hundreds of speeches. Nobody was as steadfast a champion of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. He went on to launch a campaign against the African slave trade. He kept attacking slavery for years through articles and speeches."

Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have the exact measure of the injustice and wrong which will be imposed on them. - Frederick Douglass

Speech writer

Do you ever find yourself in awe of how well he gets his point across? He should be a speech writer!

It's almost like he has a staff that writes his statements

But we all know that CIA operatives don't have access to resources like statement writers or anything.
I trust this guy as much as I trust Glenn Beck and for the same reason.

We're with you...

I certainly don't think ill

I certainly don't think ill of Snowden for what he has done, but I both hate and fear Obama.

I think most Americans would, on consideration, say the same.

I watched the movie Lockout

I watched the movie Lockout last night. The main character's last name was Snow. Reminded me very much of Snowden. Coincidence?

There's a character named

There's a character named Snowden in Catch-22 as well.

Wish he would

have signed it, Live Free or Die

Good statement though.

I wonder if Snowden has been

dumped by his handlers?

Due process

This is a great injustice on the part of the U.S. Government, and should show all Americans, and everyone, how corrupt they've become.
Mr. Snowden has been denied everything that America stood for, and that is basic human rights, and "due process".
Clearly, Mr. Snowden has been denied due process, and is being convicted by the corrupt Military-Industrial Complex that also controls the American media (MSM).
NO DUE PROCESS = NO JUSTICE.
Mr. Snowden, you are a true patriotic hero and you will be in my thoughts this July 4, especially when I watch the fireworks.
Ya Lubya Tebya (I LOVE YOU) Brother.
My prayers are with you,
Peace!

Why doesn't he just go to Venezuela?

I don't understand why he just doesn't go to Venezuela? The Ecuador guy proved to be a whimp, and just folded-up under pressure from a Joe Biden phone call, and now refuses to grant his request.

And the mighty Vladimir Putin also caved too, and has now said that he will grant asylum -- if and only if he stops all leaks and disclosures (in other words he is muzzled - no free speech).

Yet Maduro of Venezuela has practically begged him to make a request for asylum, and assured him that he would be free there. Clearly, Chavez and Maduro have been hip to the tyranny, violence, and loss of rights perpetrated around the planet by the United Warfare States of Corruption. Maduro knows that that Edward Snowden is a genuine hero, and a courageous individual who deserves the chance to remain free and to speak freely.

So Snowden, get smart, and go where you are really wanted ... Venezuela. You will not be able to find anyplace else in the World that is so loyal and consistent, against the U.S. Empire of shame, and in favor of your own freedom.

Forget Russia
Forget Ecuador
Venezuela recognizes that you're on the side of truth, means what they say, and you can go speak freely there.

And Maduro, like Chavez, will not be intimidated by a damn Joe Biden phone call.

Douche

Sorry, but he's a lame douchebag with an explosive ego. Not a hero. He gave classified information to the Chinese, for Christ' sake. Yes, the U.S. spies on China and they spy on us. Not something to be spoken out loud.

I don't feel like Snowden's "truth" has set me free. Quite unlike my reaction to the shocking revelations from PVT Manning. Manning exposed war crimes; conversely Snowden deliberately sought out NSA work just to leak it--leaking factoids we've known since or assumed since Bamford's Puzzle Palace, and especially since WIRED's article on the giant, evil byte-sucking vacuum being assembled in Utah.

F**k Snowden. Would be LOL funny if the Russians arrested him and handed him over to Obama's rotten stooges. Pissing off Obama being a far worse crime than leaking state secrets.

What the White House and the military have been doing are unconstitutional and illegal. But you don't fix these terrifying problems by giving away secrets to our military enemies.

Take back the GOP and Restore America Now.

It's Difficult To Support Snowden

...when one still thinks of oneself as part of "Team USA" and of all other countries and their peoples'as potential rivals in some weird global competetive struggle.

If anything, Snowden's current dilemma frighten's ALL global leaders because it demonstrates that ALL governments are the real threats to all of their own citizens. While foreign political leaders feign outrage to the press about NSA spying, they secretly fear their own corrupt practices being revealed by their own potential Snowdens.

I think it is clear...

The bad guy in this scenario is not Edward Snowden!

If thisis true

....something is terribly wrong with Western society.....both public and private sectors imo.

To have Americans 'defecting' to Russia is an idea that is repugnant to a free and moral society I think.

This shows very poorly on all citizens in the West. The people's apathy and ignorance is to blame but thank goodness the movie theatres and baseball stadiums are full lol

I am in no way condoning what this guy did because I like most havve no idea what he did but for the situation to get to this point is totally bizarre.

donvino

His statement brought tears

His statement brought tears to my eyes. What a nightmare. I don't even think he needs to be dead to be a true martyr with what he is going through. This is a sign of these dark times and I think we are at the beginning of the second dark ages. I can't believe the day has arrived that I am really hoping the Russians stand up to this injustice...the Russians! Can you believe that we so quickly find ourselves wishing the communists come to our rescue????

If you are reading this on DP and have not called:

The White House
Your Congressman or Congresswoman.
Your Senator
Your State Senator
Your State Assemblyman or Assemblywoman

about Snowden and the surrounding issues of Constitutional injustice,
then why are you here?

May Snowden's just cause

and his principled conviction prevail!

GO SNOWDEN

I don't like putting words into other people's mouths. But I think it is safe to say that everyone here at the Daily Paul is with you.

I hope he reads these.

I continue to be

incredibly impressed by this young man. It's hard to believe someone with level of honesty and courage actually exists. I pray that some brave country steps up to the plate and offers this man asylum.
