A big rig driver fell asleep and demolished two vehicles in a spectacular July 4th crash in New Mexico, leaving avocados everywhere. The crash occurred on I-40 near mile marker 270 in Santa Rosa. Traffic had been backed up because of a massive hailstorm in the area. The driver reportedly fell asleep and was travelling 65mph when he woke up just in time to swerve to the left, literally embedding the front of his truck into the back of the trailer in front of him. His truck then rolled and netted an incredible sight of mangled metal, avocados, and personal effects from the truck. The driver somehow survived the accident, and fortunately had no co-driver in the vehicle.

New rules just went into effect for truckers on July 1st, limiting the number of hours they can drive a week from 82 to 70. The new rules also mandate a half hour break after 8 hours of driving. NBC reported the conflict between government and industry:

The police forced me to wake up, get out of the sleeper, and show them ID under threat of arrest. In this case, I recorded both officers while it happened and I filed both state and federal civil rights complaints within a week. Less than one month later The Texas Department of Public Safety admitted wrongdoing in writing on behalf of the two officers. The admission letter, dated December 20, 2010 and signed by Captain Kenneth Plunk of the Waco Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, stated that "corrective action was needed" against both officers and that "additional training has been taken." I then filed a 42 U.S.C. Section 1983 Federal Civil Rights Lawsuit against the troopers for damages, permanent injunction, and to dissuade them from continuing this blatantly illegal practice. One of the documents released in initial disclosures revealed an internal POLICE MEMO from TX DPS officially admitting that "The passenger is under no obligation to comply with request" for ID. 5/30/13: Well well well, whatd'ya know. The Feds are investigating 'THE LOGS AND REST
HISTORY" of the commercial driver who hit the bridge in Washington last week and caused it to collapse. They are also are checking the REST HISTORY of the pilot vehicle driver who worked with the truck. Why do you think that the feds would 'check the rest history' of those people?

Because the FEDS MANDATE that commercial drivers get rest. They do this because rest is necessary and required. Commercial drivers must have at least 10 hours rest between shifts. After 10 hours off duty in the sleeper berth, shifts can last no longer than 14 hours, 11 of it driving. What if the driver had not rested as required by law? His ass would be in PRISON, that's what. Sleep-deprived Same as DUI

If you have not slept in 20 hours, you cannot pass a field sobriety test.

Hand-eye coordination, balance, judgement, reaction-time, all are affected.

I know someone who killed herself, falling asleep at the wheel.

It's no joke. Some courts are now holding employers responsible in the same manner as if the employer had supplied alcohol and then sent the employee home.

On a regular basis, in the movie industry, crew members who arrive "on location" before dawn and leave very late, die in crashes due to lack of sleep.

Well, we WERE all thinking it. Anyways, the article made some valid points, especially after the police demanded to speak to a truck driver who was slumbering while his partner drove the truck.


What is happening to truck drivers is terrible imo.

People do not understand that those 80K pound vehicles at times around them could make things very miserable for them at any moment. Drivers must be given plenty of time for rest and exercise. Exercise should be the drivers' responsiblity.

Medical emergencies also contribute to accidents...ie heart attacks. I think drivers should only drive 6 to 8 months of the year if they are doing long haul.

This event clearly shows the benefit of a fibreglass tractor ;)

Thank goodness no one was killed. I have seen my share of carnage out there. If more money was spent on adding extra lanes and widening and maintaining them instead on gov agencies and pensions and red tape in general there would be fewer incidents imo.


The Chinese have spent billions...

in building a monstrous seaport on the Pacific-side of Mexico. Amerikan regulators are now allowing Mexican trucks/drivers farther and farther into the US. Under the guise of NAFTA, the stuper-corridor is being constructed. Put all this together and what do we get? A grand conspiracy to by-pass the Port of Los Angeles, replace American truck drivers and pay Pedro a few pennies a day to drive our cheap Chinese crap to all the WalMarts from sea to shining sea.
TPTB are killing the middle-class...and enriching themselves. The lobbyists are doing a dang-fine job!!
Having driven rigs in the past, I pay attention to who's behind the wheel as I'm travelling now-a-days. It seems that the majority of rig drivers now are Pakistani, Indian, etc...at least that's what I see in my travels.

USA investors invest in China.
China investors invest in Mexico.
USA looses business to Mexico, and it's Chinese investors.


Unfortunately there will more incidents imo. Who knows where these people are trained. The insurance costs for these companies must be going up quickly not to mention the general safety out there.

Give yourselves plenty of room between you and them out there!!!!

I rarely go on the major routes anymore because of the safety factor unless I was driving one of those lol
