Fear grows over militarization of US local police.

Elizabeth Daly went to jail over a case of bottled water.

According to the Charlottesville Daily Progress, shortly after 10 p.m. April 11, the University of Virginia student bought ice cream, cookie dough and a carton of LaCroix sparkling water from the Harris Teeter grocery store at the popular Barracks Road Shopping Center. In the parking lot, a half-dozen men and a woman approached her car, flashing some kind of badges. One jumped on the hood. Another drew a gun. Others started trying to break the windows.

Daly understandably panicked. With her roommate in the passenger seat yelling “Go, go, go!” Daly drove off, hoping to reach the nearest police station. The women dialed 911. Then a vehicle with lights and sirens pulled them over, and the situation clarified: The people who had swarmed Daly’s vehicle were plainclothes agents of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. The agents had thought the sparkling water was a 12-pack of beer.

Did the ABC’s enforcers apologize? Not in the slightest. They charged Daly with three felonies: two for assaulting an officer (her vehicle had grazed two agents; neither was hurt) and one for eluding the police. Last week, the commonwealth’s attorney dropped the charges.

The agents’ excessive display of force is outrageously disproportionate to the offense they mistakenly thought they witnessed: an underage purchase of alcohol. But in a sense, Daly got off easy. A couple of weeks after her ordeal, a 61-year-old man in Tennessee was killed when the police executed a drug raid on the wrong house. A few weeks later, in another wrong-house raid, police officers killed a dog belonging to an Army veteran. These are not isolated incidents; for more information, visit the interactive map at www.cato.org/raidmap.

They are, however, part and parcel of two broader phenomena. One is the militarization of domestic law enforcement. In recent years, police departments have widely adopted military tactics, military equipment (armored personnel carriers, flash-bang grenades) — and, sometimes, the mindset of military conquerors rather than domestic peacekeepers.

The other phenomenon is the increasing degree to which civilians are subject to criminal prosecution for noncriminal acts, including exercising the constitutionally protected right to free speech.

What to do? Any point in petitioning state governors to

confiscate military arms and equipment from all police departments and reallocate them to their state national guard units? (LOL! In a non-existent perfect world perhaps.)

(And ultimately state national guard units should be pulled out of unofficial conflicts [non-Constitutionally-declared "wars"] and disallowed participation in federally-controlled military "policing" domestically.)

Obviously, governors won't do it initially, but over time perhaps? Of course time is what we don't have. And oh yeah, governors are crack whores for federal funds, too. Drat.

Would be interesting to see if *any* governors have "balls" enough to respond positively to such demands in any fashion whatsoever....

What would the Founders do?

fireant's picture

The solution is simple.

Repeal the 16th and 17th. The money-go-round would cease immediately.

Undo what Wilson did

I like it!

Good place to start, no doubt.

What would the Founders do?

Extremely unlikely that 3/4 of the states wanted shackles!

Simple: Nullify. Did 3/4 of the states really rally for federal income tax? Was there popular uprising begging for an income tax? No new taxing authority granted (see Supreme Court decisions).

Perhaps no stae wanted to give up their state legislature representation in the USA Senate. The Constitutional method of sending two state representatives by each state legislature is still present. Never redacted. No power was stripped.

Additional power was pretended... "Deemed as Passed." 1913. Even the US Supreme Court doubted their constitutionality.

Search of state archives shows clear unequivocal evidence these amendments "Deemed as Passed" without ratification of the proposed amendments by 3/4 of the states. Pending court cases have been stalled in USA federal courts for years. Simple review of state legislature calendars would show that these amendments are "Law that never was."

Understood and agreed Mr. Twain.

At this point, I don't care how we rid ourselves of these Tools for Tyranny; whatever way works, be it repeal or exposure of the fraud. In either case, it will take a massive education of the public.

Undo what Wilson did

Hope folks like the curtains I picked out.

As folks realize there is a better view without the curtains, maybe we can discard the curtains altogether & leave the discount window open to see the wonderful view.

There are certainly many ways to go. I seek a fair bargain when I trade. I wish everyone did.

With public distrust of "federal government" ramping up....

... could it be *possible*? Spectacle needed for a push, maybe? Skydivers dropping into halftime Super Bowl show with signs END THE FED / FED = FRAUD?

(We *do* have our work cut out for us, don't we?)

What would the Founders do?

fireant's picture

"End the Fed" is the wrong strategy.

Even though it would be the end result, attempting to educate the public entails endless argument over monetary policy, which will drag on, unresolved, for decades. Understanding the checks and balances created by the founders, while no easy task in itself, has a lower threshold for comprehension.
I've been a proponent of ending the Fed for several years, but have also believed it to be the wrong target all along.

Undo what Wilson did

Got it.

I suppose any message then to expose the fraudulent and illegal basis for these amendments.

What would the Founders do?

Nearly 300,000 people

Nearly 300,000 people volunteered for the military in 2009. I'm looking up or trying to look up enlistments per year. It has been an all volunteer military since 1973, bankrupting this country and imposing the us governments will around the world by force, hardly a noble exercise yet we should all rise in support and work extra years of our lives to support these volunteers many of whom become police. Yet this shit surprises people? Please, there's so much more coming and you all republican and democrat supporters the reason why this country has become more militaristic and police state-like.

Anyone see a pot bust how they kick peoples doors in, throw concussion grenades in the house which could kill someone who is innocent until proven guilty's cats, dogs. Maybe the police throw the pregnant wife down on the ground and tell the husband that unless he cooperates they'll jerk off in his wife's face tonight while they have him in the county. Like NAZI'S. And volunteering to murder people around the world and then supporting that type of "regime" is acceptable and promoted in the good ol us of a ? There's no "outrage". There's no anti war protests much less anti-war movement's like we saw in a massive sense, enough for them to shoot us, their children and kill us for protesting their sending us to go and kill people in a poor se Asian country. HUGE protests that became skirmishes between the people and the government. None of that today. Why go and organize massive protests, so aggressive that the state MUST retaliate with force but that's ok because that needed to be seen. There's none of that today. There's message boards and support your ( volunteer for a buck ) troops and dumasses who can't even give you change at the grocery store without the machine telling them how much to give and people who cannot even define what the fk Independence Day means.

And it will continue. There was only 1 congressman who had the record of fighting this and he's no longer in office. Out of 300 Million people, there is NOBODY behind him yet some seem to continue follow those who say something that sounds meaningful, in other words talk the talk but when it really counts do what they all do.

Unbelievable already. When does a people look in the mirror and realize they are looking right at the source of all their troubles right there, make amends for what wrongs they've done, try to make it right as monumental as the mass killing of millions is, I have news for you, this place has collectively fked millions of people, families, murdered, tortured, humiliated, millions. You don't invent reasons to justify that. You don't get forgiven just because. You have to DO something about it and thus far seeing huge increases in enlistments as well as sign ups for every kind of hand out known to man, more rah rah rah for killing even more people in other countries, locking fellow human beings up for using a plant for medicine or any other reason, it sure looks like the future holds lots more to come.

Most deserve whatever happens.

I recall that over 90 per cent of crimes in Moscow are committed by their police. Such stats would even make Brezhnev blush.

My sympathies to their local population.

I am noticing the latest crop of new police vehichles in ct

are of course all black - tinted up - just like the feds. All the lights are hidden away in the grills, mirrors etc. The light bar on top is as small as can be. No markings at all.

It will soon be very hard to tell if it is law enforcement or thugs from the hood.

I imagine that is by design.

Huge bump

Huge bump

For the bump

The presence of military

The presence of military style law enforcement on the streets terrify me. I am terrified and am being terrified by them. Whey is this type of terrorism allowed?

If you are terrified

then RT is doing it's job well...very well.
RT is the "allowed" opposition, Fox News' equal and opposite.
Ditch RT, it is not worth watching.

what does rt have to do with his point?

there is a militarized police-state in America

Are you a POT or a PET - Person Embracing Tyranny?

Hey Bill Jooth. Which ones should we be watching?

Watch all of them if you want.

Just recognise how the media works.
Even better, get off your fanny, throw away the idiot box and start getting active in your community.
It didn't look like too many Egyptians were sat in front of the TV when they wanted change, did it?

Did you really think I was

Did you really think I was asking you which one to watch? This is the DP. Who the heck has an account here that has to be told how the media works? Good luck in your quest to tell everyone what they should be doing...

The Question mark
