Taking the car out of gear, putting the emergency brake, and/or jamming on the foot brake are other possible alternatives to have attempted. Apparently none were done. Why not?

I've seen the question asked, "why didn't he shift into park or neutral?" Besides the theory that he was already dead at the time of the accident, what do you people think? I don't believe the shifter can be locked in drive by the software, since it actuates the transmission mechanically. And in my case I know my vehicle is loaded with electronics, but if this happened to me all I would have to do is depress the clutch and disengage the engine from the transmission. There is no way for software to stop that.
So much happens electronically these days, that I wouldn't be surprised if there was only an electronic link between the clutch and the transmission. But you raise a good point. Have you contacted Mercedes about it? Perhaps the information is available already ...

Somehow I also get the feeling that no investigation by Mercedes will be done this time. If we could track the $2.3T of untraceable DoD money, some would be on its way to Mercedes for sweeping this one under the rug, like with the death of Princes Diana, who was also in a Mercedes. They build a great vehicle, which seems to be a very efficient killing machine for the NWO.
With my own Snap-On Solus scan tool, I have the ability to control several systems in the newer vehicles, including throttle control, door locks, windows, lighting, and pretty much every device in the vehicle. Since I also have the European software upgrade, I can assure you that the Mercedes has far more nuanced electronics than the Ford Taurus that the U.of W. tech guys hacked into for their report (which i read in full).
Since my device is NOT intended to be used nefariously; but rather as a diagnostic tool, it is not only plausible, but probable, that Hastings' Mercedes WAS hacked with more advanced tech (which is obviously available).
ALSO, it was not JUST the engine that ended up down the street. If you look carefully, the fully-intact ENTIRE DRIVE-LINE including transmission and enclosed drive-shaft tube to the point where it is bolted to the differential is seen, substantially UNDAMAGED. This drive-train assembly is approximately 2/3 of the length of the vehicle.

Absolutely probable. Advanced automotive OBD systems allow a vast amount of information to be transmitted via remote Diagnosis Scan tools. I remember in the early 2000's Daimler TPMS systems could only be reset using radio transmitters or magnets in an empty parking lot. Another good point is why would Chrysler tie their ABS system to their fuel trim parameters? Fiery crash.. Hmm. Even with the car being charred you could still access the OBD parameters using a flash tool if I'm not mistaken. I can only assume that the fuel trims of this car was extremely lean to cause this car to ignite like it did. Under rich conditions the fuel would more than likely cause a lower burning fire resulting in less damage. Correct me if I am wrong.

I'll bet you can watch EVERY frontal crash test video of a Mercedes and NEVER see the engine and drivetrain chunked out of the car like that. Why was the front of the car covered with a white tarp?
Those firefighters at the scene looked awfully puzzled. I wouldn't mind having an off the record chat with them. I'd also like to hear what Mercedes has to say about it.
This is one of those stories they hope will go away. And like Corbett said, "it is our duty" (since the lying corrupt MSM won't do their job) to expose what happened.

to fry/disable a car's electronics) raised as a possibility
was in the (also convenient) 1997 Paris crash that killed Princess Diana
and her boyfriend/probably fiance Dodi Fayed. At that time only the highest
end cars had enough electronics to make it feasible, now that vulnerability
seems to have been mandated to be built into all new cars:
"As the Mercedes approaches the tunnel it is being chased by two vehicles and one motorbike - it's possible that one of the vehicles (a white Fiat Uno) rams the Mercedes just before the crash "causing it to spin out of control" (The Guardian, November 13th, 1997). As the Mercedes gets nearer the tunnel, a motorbike prevents one car (driven by Brenda Wells) from taking the approach road that leads to the tunnel. It's possible that a remote-controlled device was used - causing an explosion (reported by CNN) which was heard by witnesses - that disabled the driving controls and electronics of the Mercedes. A strobe light was also used to disable the driver on the final seconds before it entered the tunnel - which some witnesses claim was completely dark as the lights had been tuned off minutes earlier..."

I'm not interested in speculating as I have too little info about Hastings' death, I can only humble myself and just accept to take literally, AS IS, the words of warnings of Bezmenov two decades ago.
If I look out of my window, pretty much everything of our societies, on two continents I lived on, unfolded exactly as he announced, from my experience. Look around you how people function.
Look around you how the individual is being debased. Look around you how the idea of men as ants is being pushed, almost worshiped. On equality, etc. I think we are already being normalized, it's just even more deceptive "softly" than Beznenov would have had nightmares of.
That's why I kept the title. Recall, HE first worked for the very beast he chose to abandon eventually, humanely disgusted.
It's very likely Hastings is only one out of the many yet to being suppressed next among us, just as Bezmenov took the time to try warning us against.

Breitbart, Karen Silkwood, and many others made the same mistake. Not only to do what you say, but all whistleblowers should also publicly announce that they have their bases covered. Snowden did this well through Greenwald and so does Alex Jones everyday.

The bizarre aspects prior to the car hitting the palm tree are what are in question. Speeding at 100 mph for a rather long time, 4am in the morning, the car jumping the curb into the median and leaving no skid marks on the pavement or indication of braking in the grass median.
In the live Loud Labs video of the crash scene, it is very evident he hit the tree head on. However, if you take notice of the small water geyser before the tree, when he got up on the median it is said he hit a fire hydrant. But daytime videos of that area, show a concrete cover with a square hole area and a 2" to 3" broken steel pipe inside. Next to this area is a green grade level irrigation lid and box, and another irriigation box nearby. I don't believe he hit a fire hydrant, esp. since one cannot be seen anywhere in the debris field. It was probably an irrigation main riser pipe for the median irrigation system. The pipe is centered in between the car tire tracks from where it jumped the curb and then straight into the tree. Again, the tire tracks in the median grass show no indication of braking or skidding, just tracks. The car I believe traveled over and broke this pipe and it may have ruptured the fuel tank at the same time. The car then hit the palm tree head on just left of center. This can be determined by no evidence of the left fender and the right fender and wheel are still there. The car hit the tree with such force it began a forward flip, in other words, the rear of the car flew up in the air as the car engine compartment was traveling through to the tree, causing the roof line and roof to actually smash up against the tree. This can be seen in the daytime video as well as scrapes on the palm tree at least 5' or more high. As the front of the car was traveling forward and upward into the tree, the tremendous forces broke the engine mounts and as the car pitched up the motor complete with transmission was hurled forward out of the car. Because the car hit the tree left of center, the motor missed or grazed the tree as it flew out. Had the car directly center punched the tree, the motor would have ended up in the firewall or front drivers compartment. The engine in a MB C250 is inline with rear wheel drive. Again, the engine and debris field path to where the engine came to rest, is indictive of the force of the impact and the car flipping up throwing pieces forward. Also, the final position of the car indicates the left of center impact which caused the car to rotate to the right of initial impact. The car was fully enguled in flames, which may be explained by the fuel tank being ruptured by the pipe in the median. As the car hit the palm tree and flipped up, gas would have been spewed all over the undercarriage of the car and was easily ignited by the exhaust system. A full tank of fuel would have made the fire quickly overtake the entire car. The absence of any skid marks on the pavement or the median grass prior to jumping the curb is a key question. The Mexican saying the car was bouncing up and down further back may have been the car bottoming out in a dip or rise in the roadway from the high rate of speed. If the car had it's control system hacked, which is what I believe happened, the question then becomes what control of the car did Hasting's have if any? Obviously, he had no brake or throttle control. Was the steering overridden, or was he just hanging on for dear life until he lost control and jumped the median curb. Or did he not have steering and they finally drove him off the road knowing he would hit something that would be fatal at that speed. Was he even alive at that point, if he was why didn't he have presence of mind to pull the emergency brake or try and put the car in neutral? He was speeding for quite a distance and I think he was smart enough to think of the e-brake at some point. Might not have stopped him, but would have put some skid marks down for a little bit. What position was the e-brake in post accident? Did he have a garage for his car or a carport? Was someone intially following him and he freaked and speed up in a panic to loose them. There is no doubt that hitting the tree was cause for a fatal accident, but had someone already killed him and was sending him on a joy ride? Where was he going or coming from at 4am in the morning? The accident itself is no doubt an accident, but what was the reason for him recklessly speeding, which was totally out of character for him to cause the accident? Again, I believe his car's onboard computer was hacked. I wish I could actually have been at the scene to get a better idea of things, and see the car itself.
