Did The Catholic Church Ordain Gay Weddings A Long Time Ago?

Yes.

"Contrary to myth, Christianity's concept of marriage has not been set in stone since the days of Christ, but has evolved both as a concept and as a ritual. Prof Boswell discovered that in addition to heterosexual marriage ceremonies in ancient church liturgical documents (and clearly separate from other types of non-marital blessings such as blessings of adopted children or land) were ceremonies called, among other titles, the "Office of Same Sex Union" (10th and 11th century Greek) or the "Order for Uniting Two Men" (11th and 12th century).

These ceremonies had all the contemporary symbols of a marriage: a community gathered in church, a blessing of the couple before the altar, their right hands joined as at heterosexual marriages, the participation of a priest, the taking of the Eucharist, a wedding banquet afterwards. All of which are shown in contemporary drawings of the same sex union of Byzantine Emperor Basil I (867-886) and his companion John. Such homosexual unions also took place in Ireland in the late 12th/early 13th century, as the chronicler Gerald of Wales (Geraldus Cambrensis) has recorded.

Boswell's book, The Marriage of Likeness: Same Sex Unions in Pre- Modern Europe, lists in detail some same sex union ceremonies found in ancient church liturgical documents. One Greek 13th century "Order for Solemnisation of Same Sex Union" having invoked St Serge and St Bacchus, called on God to "vouchsafe unto these thy servants [N and N] grace to love one another and to abide unhated and not a cause of scandal all the days of their lives, with the help of the Holy Mother of God and all thy saints." The ceremony concludes: "And they shall kiss the Holy Gospel and each other, and it shall be concluded."

Another 14th century Serbian Slavonic "Office of Same Sex Union", uniting two men or two women, had the couple having their right hands laid on the Gospel while having a cross placed in their left hands. Having kissed the Gospel, the couple were then required to kiss each other, after which the priest, having raised up the Eucharist, would give them both communion.

Boswell found records of same-sex unions in such diverse archives as those in the Vatican, in St Petersburg, in Paris, Istanbul, and in Sinai, covering a period from the 8th to the 18th centuries.

Nor is he the first to make such a discovery. The Dominican Jacques Goar (1601-1653) includes such ceremonies in a printed collection of Greek prayer books.

The words, "gay," and, "homosexual," are VERY MODERN words...they are most definitely NOT ancient Greek, or Hebrew words from the Bible.

http://www.gaychurch.org/gay_and_christian_yes/the_bible_chr...

The term “homosexual” is of modern origin, and it wasn’t until about a hundred years ago that it was first used. There is no word in biblical Greek or Hebrew that is equivalent to the English word homosexual. The 1946 Revised Standard Version (RSV) of the Bible was the first translation to use the word.

So let's get things, "straight," here. The words, "gay," "homosexual," and, "heterosexual," did not exist until very recently on the historical timeline.

The Catholic Church ordained gay weddings hundreds of years ago.

You were lied to, big surprise.

When I was growing up, I always thought it was a sin to be gay because that was what I was taught.

What I was taught had nothing to do with truth or freedom.

Hmm...

But there is no excuse that any partnerships should be favored by the State with benefits.

We are $17 Trillion in debt, lets eliminate unjust privilege of those feeding off of borrowed money.

Our taxes barely pay the interest on the principle.

These benefits are from borrowed money that we'll pay interest on until this government crumbles under the weight of its insolvency.

Free includes debt-free!

From old school gay marriage

From old school gay marriage to modern day economics....

I don't see how the two are related.

Oh wait a minute...two gay guys live together but can't legally get married because their state government says so, so they both pay taxes as being, "single," thus providing the government with more tax money just because he or she is not, "married," according to official state doctrine.

I think I get it now...the government wants all of us - straight, gay and bisexual to be single because that means more money for them.

The best way to get bent over by the government is to be single and pay taxes. Then you're really screwed.

Never be afraid to ask simple questions.

Sodomy was never legal in a Catholic Church

It was made very clear to me that marriage has NOTHING to do with love and everything to do with PRO-CREATION. Marriage is to give sacraments to a couple FOR THEIR HEIRS.

When I lived in Naples, the man were notorius for extra marital affairs with women and men.. their wives were tolerant of the affairs because there was NOT going to be a divorse.. LOVE had NOTHING to do with the relationship.. the blood line and heirs were what the Church cared about.

Before modern day marriage, the Church had COURTS and even Catholic couples were NOT allowed to marry because of the blood lines.

But today's issue is, who is owed benefits.

Of course the taxes are unconstitutional. But hey, we have to rob someone, especially the rich some say.

St. Francis of Assisi blessed pets and livestock, should they get benefits also?

Free includes debt-free!

Pets and livestock are not

Pets and livestock are not human, nor do they pay taxes.

Many people act as if gay people are not human...tell that to Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Alexander the Great.

So many Americans are a bunch of closet cases in more than one way... they can't handle the truth.

Never be afraid to ask simple questions.

That wasn't my point.

Where do we draw the lines on who get awarded benefits. Or who pays taxes.

I say leave everyone tax free and benefit free.

You've presumed I have prejudices I do not own. It makes dialogue difficult.

Free includes debt-free!

Homosexuals are human

I am not against homosexuals, homosexual unions, or homosexual legal unions or even honosexual weddings EXCEPT in a Church or Temple where the believers do not condone sodomy. For homosexuals to demand to be married in a Church or Temple that condemns sodomy, I fail to see the LOVE, and suggest the pair are making a political statement AGAINST the Church and or temple. To me, this is immoral, and has nothing to do with homosexuality and everything to do with corruption employing secular laws.

Spot on

Thank you.
