Are We Becoming a Nation of Part-Timers?

The Part Time Recovery - What the Jobs Report Shows

Yesterday's job report was touted as further evidence of economic recovery.

Mostly ignored was the surge in the underemployment rate from 13.8 % to 14.3%.

What will this mean for Fed's plans to taper QE and how might it impact the real estate market?

Are we becoming a nation of part timers?

This podcast discusses this and other economic news:

I just picked up a part time job

I run my business during the day
now i waiter two nights a week, just for extra cash.

At 35 years old, I know that this is not uncommon, as many in my area/age group are either house-poor or student-loan-poor.

the jobs report should indicate as a headline

how many full time jobs were created not just the total number of jobs

We should be part timers....

I keep wondering why we have to keep working full time when productivity keeps going up.

Obviously it is because any extra we produce is taken through taxes - directly, or through the inflation tax.

And by the way, part time work would pay the bills if our expectations didn't also keep going up. A hundred years ago most families would have loved to have what a part time job will now buy you.

Hard to raise a family on part time. Though the easiest way to do it is to not work, and pump out kids using that money taken from the producers.

Although I'm a part-time teacher, I spend countless outside hours grading Papers, preparing etc.

Individuals otherwise are free to choose 40-hour 9/5 weeks, but I can't help think that one's humanity is lost in such a corporate-type meat grinder.

Finally and as mentioned below, inflation/currency destruction seems to answer why there's such disconnect between labor and wages

If that were true it would be economic nirvana

if people could work part time because their productivity was such they could make enough for more leisure time.

But that is not the case with the current economy.

This point is covered in the podcast and blog post

The bulk of the new part time jobs are in service sectors where the company needs the man hours.

"that part time work is increasing not because productivity is increasing and workers can complete their jobs in few hours but that employers require staff on site for a certain amount of hours and can cost effectively fill these hours with part time workers."

Wasn't this one of the goals of Obamacare?

Many small to medium businesses warned before passage that they would cut employees hours so they wouldn't be forced to cover health insurance...thus pushing affected individuals to Obamacare. My guess is that this was probably one of the goals of Obama (and Reid and Pelosi).

did you see that the administration pushed back the

employer mandate till 2014?

Do you think that will encourage more hiring of full time employees?

I don't think so...

I don't think so. I think businesses are still very UNSURE of what to expect. And although many of us on DP feel that the two parties are really one party, I personally think many businesses will wait to find out what happens at mid-term elections or next presidential election.

Hiring people is a bad idea. Period

Complying with Obamacare, Soc Sec., State and Federal taxes, Comp, OSHA, EPA, and 30 others is incompatible with making a profit at almost anything you want to do or make.
Having to hire poorly educated (government schools) sexual harassing, entitled, thieving, texting workers make it worse. (you can't ask that question)

Personally, I think it's too late for humans.

Anybody here think McDonalds can't be automated with existing technology and run at a profit?

As an employer and supervisor for 35 years, I am positive that hiring humans is a bad idea.
(Employee Kweku Adoboli cost his boss two billion dollars.)

I just had a thought. I'll bet I can make our export crates with a 3D printer.

There is a misconception that companies

exist to provide employment
they don't-they exist to make a profit and if they make a profit and it makes economic sense to have employees they will have them.

Make it difficult to make a profit by increasing the cost of labor and companies won't hire employees.

Seems unfortunately true

I can attest loving my jobs (teaching music), while PT work seems to be among the few positions available.

Quite frankly the timed schedule doesn't frustrate me however, as much how far a dollar doesn't seem to go nowadays

the good side to part time employment

is your employer has less control over your life

Of course

because everything is based on from quarter to quarter in terms of economic health.

Such short-sighted thinking will eventually bring even more grief.

Just waiting till this practice comes to the public sector and the results of it lol

All public sector workers should pay twice as much tax since they make twice as much as the private sector imo.

as part of the "progressive" tax structure

if public employees make more they will pay more tax

I can't BUY a job right now...

been slinging applications for 8 months and can't seem to get past HR on anything. I'm over-qualified, under-qualified or the wrong gender or race. I could wait tables for a few bucks an hour, but that really wouldn't help my situation at all....I'd like to know where these 195,000 new jobs are.

try looking for state job.

New hires, new titles and a $60,000 raise for one Chafee aide

The woman in the picture is not the guy that got the $60,000 raise. He looks like he's ready to retire next year. Nice. I'm sure he will be collecting a pension based upon his new salary. He's the Governor's assistant on Special Projects now. SPECIAL PROJECTS!!! What the heck is that?

yes this is a real problem

and is being ignored

part time work doesn't provide the income or career advancement of full time jobs.

"Are we becoming a nation of part timers?" You betcha!

It all fits in the plan to rob us of what little we have left (most of us).

It's perfect for TPTB. Many fewer of us will be full-time employees, so we won't get health benefits at our jobs.

Meanwhile, the government (bag man for the insurance industry in this case) will fine us anywhere from $900 the first year of non-coverage on up.... thus making some tidy $$$ from our misfortune.

What would the Founders do?

The longer we believe these falsehoods the more they drain us dry.

Time to ignore the elected morons and get back to work.
