Obama signs executive order to allow shutdown of all US communications

OMG!! What next?

RT had reported that in a secretly unannounced move, President Barack Obama signed an executive order giving the Department of Homeland Security the ability to shut down all of the United States' communications systems upon his request. Barack Obama laid out a statement he titled "Assignment of National Security Emergency Preparedness Communications Function". No doubt a very confusing title. The reasoning behind his issuing of this executive order, is that he feels the government may one day need to access all of our telephones, computers, cable communications, etc., in the name of national security.

I would love to reply to the comment by Robert Simmons

But I don't do Tracebook.

Robert said:

"'Secretly unannounced'? While a phrase like that is redundant and nonsensical, I have to ask what is secret about a formal executive order that is published on the White House's website. http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/07/06/execut...
The order forms a committee to oversee and ensure effective dissemination of emergency broadcasting, and does not contain any wording that allows the president to 'shut down all communications systems upon his request.'
Additionally, how can a sensationalist paraphrasing of an RT article reporting on an executive order signed one year ago be filed under 'top news' other than as an attempt to take advantage of recent controversy? I'm not one to defend the establishment, but for the sake of respectable journalism, this is a very deceptive and lazy article."

The comment he will never see is as follows...

@Robert Simmons

Please note the following text from the order: - "with respect to the exercise of authorities assigned to the President under section 706 of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended (47 U.S.C. 606)"

In context:

"Sec. 2.3. The Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism and the Director of OSTP shall make recommendations to the President, informed by the interagency policy process established in PPD-1, with respect to the exercise of authorities assigned to the President under section 706 of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended (47 U.S.C. 606). The Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism and the Director of OSTP shall also jointly monitor the exercise of these authorities, in the event of any delegation, through the process established in PPD-1 or as the President otherwise may direct."

47 USC § 606 - War powers of President

Read it!

It annoys me a little because many of the replies to his comment show how lots of people have taken his comment at face value and just assumed he is correct in his assessment.
