Every Christian, and Every History Student Should Read This!

Pagan Christianity? is an amazing book that EVERY Christian needs to read, as well as anyone interested in history. It is well organized and thoroughly documented (although I wish it used more primary sources for support).

This was one of the fist steps that helped me understand the world more clearly when I was first waking up, before my eyes were open. In fact, it was step #5 on my journey.

Of course Viola and Barna are wrong about a few things, and generally don't go nearly far enough, but did I mention that every Christian NEEDS to read this book? Though it doesn't purport to, Pagan Christianity? pertains strongly to the liberty movement. For it is about corruption, centralized power, and pinnacly, Satan's empire.

If you don't think Viola goes far enough....

you may enjoy James Rutz's book the Open Church. He comes to many of the same conclusions that Viola does, but he takes it one step further (and maybe more!) by citing the Scriptural commands related to fellowship in church, and how they might be carried out. He also provides the stories of three churches that are making valiant attempts to cure 'the passivity of the laity' problem. Amazon also has his minibook, 1700 Years Is Long Enough, A Guide to Creating An Open Church

P & R publishing actually has another book, Harvie M. Conn's Evangelism, Doing Justice and Preaching Grace that describes a similar problem, but doesn't go as far as either Rutz or Viola. This book is still a worthwhile read just because of the paradigm shift in thinking when you read it, if you are from a more 'ordered' church background. If you read the reviews on Amazon, you will also get a small treat for your time :) (from someone who has met him!)
