Government Run BusinessSubmitted by Linda Cross on Mon, 07/15/2013 - 12:53
I started to purchase an overseas ticket last night. The trip was to be two weeks from now. As I was about to pay, I thought to check my daughter's passport. Oh no! EXPIRED! After a little on line search I found that since she is now an adult, she will need a new passport, not just a renewal. I quickly filled out the online forms and looked up where to go. With post office expedited service, I could get the passport in 2 to 3 weeks, at a total cost of $222.85. She would have to personally appear at a post office. The regional post office which could do it faster was hundreds of miles away, so not an option.
Early this morning, I called for an appointment at the main post office. The earliest appointment, even at 15 minute intervals, was 16 days away! They did recommend one post office in my city of over a million, which has walk in service. Upon calling that post office I was told that walk ins for today are already closed. I should come tomorrow when it opens at 8:15 and get in line earlier if I expect to get in.
Can you imagine a private business turning away customers who are waiting in line to purchase their products? Wouldn't they hire more employees and purchase more equipment to handle the demand? Keep in mind that the US Post Office is going broke. Passports are not free. There are also several side products that each customer might buy when they purchase a basic passport:
Passport book $110.00
required execution fee $25.00
Passport Card $30.00
Passport picture (one) $15.00
file search $150.00
add pages to passport $82.00
overnight mail $12.85
There are some private businesses which can expedite your passport in less time than the Post Office. By some hidden magical process, due to a "special relationship" with the regional Post Offices, and for a fee, they can get a passport in days. (Corrupt, but "legal" system)
Just wait until the government is in charge of health care......
