Government Run Business

I started to purchase an overseas ticket last night. The trip was to be two weeks from now. As I was about to pay, I thought to check my daughter's passport. Oh no! EXPIRED! After a little on line search I found that since she is now an adult, she will need a new passport, not just a renewal. I quickly filled out the online forms and looked up where to go. With post office expedited service, I could get the passport in 2 to 3 weeks, at a total cost of $222.85. She would have to personally appear at a post office. The regional post office which could do it faster was hundreds of miles away, so not an option.

Early this morning, I called for an appointment at the main post office. The earliest appointment, even at 15 minute intervals, was 16 days away! They did recommend one post office in my city of over a million, which has walk in service. Upon calling that post office I was told that walk ins for today are already closed. I should come tomorrow when it opens at 8:15 and get in line earlier if I expect to get in.

Can you imagine a private business turning away customers who are waiting in line to purchase their products? Wouldn't they hire more employees and purchase more equipment to handle the demand? Keep in mind that the US Post Office is going broke. Passports are not free. There are also several side products that each customer might buy when they purchase a basic passport:

Passport book $110.00
required execution fee $25.00
Passport Card $30.00
Passport picture (one) $15.00
file search $150.00
add pages to passport $82.00
expedited $60.00
overnight mail $12.85

There are some private businesses which can expedite your passport in less time than the Post Office. By some hidden magical process, due to a "special relationship" with the regional Post Offices, and for a fee, they can get a passport in days. (Corrupt, but "legal" system)

Just wait until the government is in charge of health care......

Why the Post Office?

The PO is an agent for the Department of State to check paperwork, photos, etc., before forwarding the application to a passport issuing agent. The PO does not issue passports. My local city hall also accepts applications, which is where I turned in my app and photos last year when I last renewed. My local County Clerk (or is it the County Recorder? I forget.) is also an accepting agent.

Since the PO is an inept organization I prefer to use them as little as possible.

2006 + Bush + stupid customers

"Keep in mind that the US Post Office is going broke. Stupid Post Office." Your words. "Wouldn't they hire more employees and purchase more equipment to handle the demand?" Again, your words. Tell me, do you know WHY the Post Office is going broke? Hmm? Can you tell me what lunacy is at work here? Can you tell me which is cheaper, sending mail with UPS or with the USPS? Can you tell me anything without out complaining about that which you do not understand? Until 2006, the Post Office was profitable and ran as a private business would. In fact, aside from CIA drugs and gun running, the USPS was the only money making branch of the government. Look, I'm sorry you had to wait sooo long on your passport. Next time, plan a little further ahead. My wife is a passport agent at the USPS. 34 years of age and not a mean bone in her body. Everyday, people come to her window with the firm belief that a failure to plan on their part constitutes an emergency on my wife's part. They treat her like shit because they think the post office is "Stupid". You know, she's just working. And yes, I can imagine a private business turning away customers who are waiting in line to purchase their products. It's called a Hospital.

My sincere apologies, thank you for your candor.

I had no intention to offend postal workers. I have always found post office workers very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Prices at the post office are reasonable, in fact prices are very competitive for the service rendered. I also kick myself, once again, for not renewing family member's passports before planning a trip. It's just one of those things that I never look at until it is needed, bad habit. If you have ever dealt with third world postal services, as I have, you really appreciate the quality of service at the USPS. My post was only intended to point out that there is a lot of profit falling through the cracks, and possible jobs being lost, by the post office in my location because it is not equipped to handle the sales which it could have. Thanks to your comment I now know what was wrong with the post. Lesson learned. I will be very careful if I ever use the word "stupid" in the future, and have removed it from the post. Thank You!

The post office is in the hole because they are required by law to cover huge pension costs. Without this burden, they would make money. Yes, the government has run another successful "business" into the ground. For anyone who might not know.

To climb the mountain, you must believe you can.

I didnt read all of your post, but here is some help.

Just call the us passport office and explain that you have a flight within 48 hrs and need a passport. Hopefully you have a passport agency near you. They will need the flight confirmation number(but i dont think they check when you actually get there...). They wont care if they are booked and you have to leave the country in the next few days or week, they will book the appt anyhow if you have proof of a flight.

You can thus get a passport the same day this way. Total fees are mich less thank what you quoted. Perhaps only 125 iirc

Good luck.

get a passport in 24 hours

i have used this before

Would you read it please,

and suggest a better title for me? Thanks! People were downvoting "Stupid Post Office" apparently without reading it, so a change of title is in order!

ok I read it. sounds like a pain..I see you already found a new title - I prefer the original haha. If it's any consolation the BMV (or DMV in a lot of states) in my town is incredibly fast and efficient.

DMVs are notorious for inefficiency,

they don't make passports, only the Post Office does that. Ok, back to the original title. Maybe it wasn't the title.

I realize that - but you were talking about government-run business...I was being serious.. my dmv is surprisingly efficient. I'm never there longer than ten or fifteen minutes.
