Is it bad thinking or bad character that is driving the attacks on Zimmerman?Submitted by mungke on Mon, 07/15/2013 - 16:12
Ive been staying relatively quiet on the Zimmerman thing, trying to figure out where the Zimmerman critics are coming from. As an attorney, I've talked to a surprising number of attorneys, minorities and not, who support the case against Zimmerman. And I've talked to others that do as well. And, of course I've seen the public figures lining up with their positions.
I'll start by saying this one wasn't even close. The trial as it developed appeared to be a landslide from day one in favor of Zimmerman. There was a reason he wasn't arrested or charged initially. Even little intanglible things that only a trial lawyer would pick up on made it clear. The law was clearly on his side. People like Geraldo were absolutely right, this one wasn't close, ever, not even a bit (and Geraldo is a former trial lawyer).
What is disturbing is that I've noticed some "character" issues with those who support the case. For example, I know a disbarred lawyer, who thinks Zimmerman "did it." There are the usual pundits pushing their agenda, the Sharptons, the democratic party politicians as well.
I even know a lawyer who has lost every single case he tried, and his response when asked about it was "the wrong side always wins." Now THAT isn't true, not ALWAYS. It is far more likely that he just has bad legal judgment about what should win or not. Because he sure got this one wrong.
I've tried to understand their logic, sincerely. At the end of the day, it seems to me the racists are the ones calling Zimmerman, a Peruvian - American who is browner than most Mexicans I know, a "white" man who they speculate hates blacks and was motivated by racial animus. Those accusers are the racists. The people who brought trial or the lawyers who advocated that this was a race motivated "crime" are racists and an affront to progress under the 14th amendment.
And aside from the race issue, there were no facts. Assume they're both white, or black, or green. Kid attacks, head being beaten on ground, guy pulls gun at that point and it's over. A relatively simple self defense case and no witnesses say otherwise. It's hard to see how this ever got filed, except by poor character people caving to political pressure, brought by other people who were either stupid or incompetent or of poor character as well. Some strong words, but seriously, someone has to say it.
