Well, I Got Mugged In My Street At 8:05PM PST Today. 50 Yards From Home.

Right after the corner of the southbound sidewalk, they came into my face, out of nowhere. 3 of them. "Youths."

I won't give any details here for obvious reasons.

It took me 1 or 2 seconds to realize what it was about after I heard the first "Give me your phone!", "Give me your wallet!"

I know, I'm slow, sometimes.

As I crossed my arms around my jacket, two of them got my phone out of my right hand, and started to grab me and shake me.

I felt a little punch on my lower jaw, almost nothing, like it was a miss, and as the struggle began, then I noticed the knife, 10 or so inch long, a kitchen kind of knife. I have the alike at home. That's when I knew it wasn't worth fighting back.

I was already on the ground, on that neighbor's front yard, as I screamed for help, trying to crawl slowly away only screaming also "Don't do that!" and to get myself some distance.

Maybe 20 seconds had passed. Tops.

While on the ground, I didn't want to lose sight of the blade, but I looked up to the face of the one holding it.

The neighbor across the street coming to my help who rushed out of his home after hearing my cry says he saw two of them hitting me while I was on the ground. I think they were trying anyway, because I didn't get hurt anywhere it seems. Must have been too fast or they missed me.

The knife and the distance between it and me. That's all I cared about for the last 10 seconds.

He scared them away, they ran away, starting from the middle of the street, with my phone. You have no idea how much I feel I owe him. As I had lost my glasses in the last 5 seconds, I was really fearing for my safety.

I hugged him after 30 minutes spent with the cops to give them my statement.

Can't say more for now. Only that I have the nice "business card" of the police officer I should call if I ever recognize one of them again in my block.

They stole my phone, after all.

It sounds like the muggers

It sounds like the muggers were on top of Cyril before he could have pulled a gun. Which poses an interesting scenario - how to get the draw on your attackers in a close proximity situation, or while being beaten.

As to communities, we had a small house fire a couple weeks ago. It's amazing how a tragedy can bring a neighborhood together. We had so many folks offering their homes or anything else that they could do for us. I've been reading that when the s*&) hits the fan, it's your neighbors and community that will make a difference. I think that's very true.

Thanks for sharing Cyril, I hope you find peace of mind.

I still can't disclose too much here, just a quick update

I still can't disclose too much here, just a quick update on last shared sentiment here:

those promising thugs are believed to be from outside our area, and it was a random hit, with close to zero preparation except for the waiting for twilight. They better not show up again, not around us, anyway; and for their own freedom of move &/or safety. Also, HD cameras are so cheap and easy to conceal and use, fixed or not, these days, aren't they? ;)

Luckily

you didn't have a defense weapon to defend yourself or you would be in jail too.

Thank you for sharing this with us. I'm sorry it happened to you and I'm glad you're handling it with such strength and grace. I'm also glad you weren't hurt and that you have such good neighbors.

I'm sorry that all sounds a lot like a greeting card. I read your posts a lot and I just wanted to send you some support. :-)

is it an iphone and can you

is it an iphone and can you locate it?

The police didn't protect you?!?

Oh my gosh! I thought since Americans paid their taxes in part to pay the police that these types of crimes would be prevented. Who would have ever guessed that the police mainly respond to crimes after the fact.

I hope you purchase a firearm. I'll admit that it's unfortunate, but maybe next time if you infect the thugs with lead poisoning, the problem in your neighborhood may be mitigated. It would certainly be a hard thing for most people to live with but you would be doing the right thing.

Next time they try to rob you, shoot the bastards.

Then the media will paint him

Then the media will paint him as a racist, shooting innocent school children. Obama may also make a statement that he could have been one of those muggers.

He's lucky

They didn't try to arrest him or his neighbor or threaten them with arrest. Or say HE was the one with the kitchen knife.

There's a reason why Public Enemy made a song called "911 is a joke." I think I was 13 or 14 when the song came out.

And as for getting a permit to CC, here in CA you get laughed at (at least when I tried to get one) even if you were almost beaten to death and shot at or held at gunpoint. Plus if the attacker were shot, you would probably go to prison, and get to join some gang in order not to get killed, maybe even if it happened in your own house.

Unfortunately here in CA there is an uneven playing field on the street, as the criminals are armed and we are not. CA is proof gun control does NOT work. This is FEINSTEIN'S state!

As utopian as it may seem, we can not rid the world of weapons. As we know, mutually assured destruction works to a decent degree. So why not apply that to us serfs? Criminals are always going to have weapons. Why give them the upper hand? Us non violent people vastly outnumber the violent criminals. It wouldn't turn into the wild west. Many states show that isn't true.

He lives in CA

If he did that he'd be in jail, on his way to prison!

I think you will find, they stole more than your cell phone.

By tomorrow you may find they stole your peace of mind and that false sense of security that felt so good as you walked down your street and through your familiar neighborhood.

If you see something, say something, the government is listening.

Sorry to hear it, Cyril ...

Ya know I remember when 'muggers' were usually adult petty thieves trying to shake down the unsuspecting passer-by. Probably showing my age with that one, huh?
But, now-a-days it's always some click of juveniles who are wanna be gangsters doing this sort of stuff. Gangsters. That's a laugh. I'd like to see these punks trying to tell the paisans on Murray Hill in Little Italy that they are the 'new generation' of gangsters. They'd scare those kids straight.

If only California didn't 'Californicate' your God given right bear arms. I'm formerly from Ohio - they don't like guns in the hands of their constituents either. Only the cops and the criminals (sometimes that's one in the same) have guns.

Now I live in Arizona. The last of the wild west States where I can (and do, every single day) open carry or carry concealed without a permit. Still, even though it is not necessary, went through the effort to qualify for the CCW anyway. A lawyer friend said that if the unfortunate happens, and I have to shoot, the courts would consider a permit holder who took the class and qualified a more responsible defendant than one who did not.
And, I'm a biker, too. Judges tend not to respect us much.
Must be the chained wallet.
Who knows, maybe if those robes came in leather it'd be different. (Hehe)
Anyway, I think a watch group is an excellent way to help protect yourself and your neighbors. I wish you peace and God bless, Cyril.

Be vigilant, yet not hyper-vigilant.

I'm glad you didn't get escorted downtown reporting a crime and have it put back on you, like "must have been a drug deal gone wrong" or "no shots were fired" when shell casings are on the ground.

I live in a good area but travel. I think either you need to get a neighborhood association or just neighborhood meetings going on, or just shooting some BS with the neighbors.

In my neighborhood, just from sitting outside at night crime was reduced to 0%. People were breaking into vehicles all the time, so much I left mine unlocked.

You'll be okay.

Police will recommend pepper spray but I wouldn't. Good way to get sued. Get the good people together and sit outside. It works. You don't even have to call the cops. The idiots will go away once they know people are watching, they are cowards.

Do you want them to crack your cranium with a bat and run you over? No. Just sit outside. They will be scared shitless. I'm serious. Be able to record video and ask people why they are walking thru your neighborhood. Just ask "Do you need any help?" They are like cockroaches. They will scurry.

Best of luck my friend and PM me if you need help.

I know you like to smoke, or even if you've quit by now sit outside with them and talk until you need to go to bed. These kids are cowards. Just sit outside and shoot the shit until you can't stay awake any longer for a few weeks.

You just described the strategy I've decided to apply since yesterday, and tonite chatting with yet another neighbor next to my good samaritan's, also interested in the Neighborhood Watch idea, while having our after dinner smoke. Plus, he's a biker and I'm a wanna-be one ;)

Just sit with yr neighbors

It works. Nobody wants to commit a crime with an audience. We had a good dozen break ins within a few weeks.

So we sat outside. Immediately it stopped and we found the kid who was doing it and he never did it again, without us turning him in. All we had to do was ask him what he was doing.

I heard this morning on the tv news

that cell phone thefts are on the rise in so cal. There have also been several "bashmobs", random groups of youths roaming and attacking people. Do any of your neighbors have surveillance cameras? Hope you are doing okay.

Cool. I can even get a copy of my police report in the mail

Cool.

I can even get a copy of my police report in the mail within 10 days. It's just $5.50.

Ah, I want that one for my records. My first - and last hopefully! - interaction ever with the police in 43 years.

You bet I want.

After being robbed multiple

After being robbed multiple times in Ca. and not being able to protect myself with a firearm, I had enough 7 years ago and moved to FL. It isn't perfect here, but there's no state income tax and both myself and my wife now count ourselves among our record 1,000,000+ CCW holders. I'm a shorts and t-shirt type of guy and while not the gun I would choose if I know I was going to have a confrontation, the best gun in the world does you no good at home, so I front pocket carry a Ruger LCP in a Recluse holster(greatest pocket holster EVER)with a Crimson Trace laser and Hornady Critical Defense hollow points. The ability to defend myself is always RIGHT THERE. My wife carries a Ruger LCR .38 LCR, also with Crimson Trace. We both went through Front Site's 4 day handgun course. We feel well prepared to defend ourselves. I would never move back to Ca. or any state that would deny me that right EVER!

My strategy is

to keep my credit cards maxed out all the time, then hand them my wallet and not report it stolen. If only I could get to see them do the walk of shame after my cards get declined, it would be totally worth being mugged.
J/K....Glad you're alright Cyril:)

Update, btw.

Update, btw.

As I returned from my good samaritan neighbor's two hours ago, after spending two hours talking with him, he agrees the situation is not evolving good (euphemism) but it's not too late to do something about it. So we're going to work on/kickstart this neighborhood watch for good after two "incidents" alike in the last 6 months.

This is EXACTLY WHY YOU ALWAYS Carry your GUN!!

Carrying your side arm should be like carrying your car keys. Even IF the government says you can't, YOU SHOULD!!!

Your life is YOUR responsibility at all times. TREAT IT THAT WAY!

Had you shot these bastards, it would send a clear message to anyone who reads about it - - - You pull this crap, you die!

Simple... Dead criminals add up to safer neighborhoods.

Love Liberty, be Vigilant

"Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty" (2 Corinthians 3:17)

Faith in God will prevail all things!

I live in Florida. I carry two guns. Notice...

There are no riots in Florida now... no wandering yoots blocking traffic.

There are over 1,000,000 concealed carry permits in Florida. If you screw with someone's life, you are likely to regret it.

In Cali, the Police will come 15 minutes after you are dead and take your body to the morgue... or stand down so as not to "inflame" the protesters.

Where was

your knife at? You should always carry one on you. I carry two.

Cyril, hope you're regaining your bearings

after such a horrendous attack. Get better brother.

would proffer that you may want to look into getting CCW, but seeing as you're in SoCal, not even NorCal, it's gonna be difficult.

Plus, if a "Zimmerman" case happened in CA, can't imagine how much more difficult it would be.

hope you get better and leave Commufornia, as soon as you can, if your significant other, family or particulars of your occupation isn't locking you there.

prayers friend. get well.

Really, I feel like I'm okay.

Really, I feel like I'm okay. Again, I know I was darn lucky. Now I have evidence of my private angel watching after me, somewhere in the heavens :) j/k

More seriously, I'll be completely over it soon, don't worry. And you can bet I'll be 10 times more aware now, including in my area.
