Jimmy Carter: ‘America No Longer Has A Functioning Democracy’

Former president Jimmy Carter condemned the effect U.S. intelligence programs had on U.S. moral authority in the wake of NSA revelations brought to light by leaker Edward Snowden, Der Spiegel reports.

“America has no functioning democracy,” Carter said at a meeting of The Atlantic Bridge in Atlanta, Georgia on Tuesday.

Carter also claimed there was currently no reason for him to be “optimistic” about Egypt’s internal conflicts and mused whether the standards The Carter Center applies to foreign elections could be fulfilled by U.S. elections, which he believes are plagued by confusing campaign rules and a lack of restrictions on free speech in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling.

Respect

I have a lot of Respect for President Carter. He was not supposed to become president, Gerald Ford was the establishment candidate.

He took over during a difficult time, the second OPEC crisis hit at the same time the bill for the Vietnam War and the effects of de-linking the dollar from the gold standard thanks to Richard Nixon. Interest rates climbed above 20% during his presidency. We now know that HW Bush orchestrated the Iranian Hostage October surprise that lead into Iran-Contra.

Carter is not establishment. He follows his convictions. Carter is willing to speak out against his former Party. He is not afraid to say unpopular but very true things, such as his writings regarding Palestine and Israel. He is a Christian who acts rather than preaches.

Was he / is he flawed? Yeah, like all human beings are. Is he a good man, I believe so.

I was 3 to 7 during his term

growing up in a Republican voting house, but have always felt Jimmy Carter was a trustworthy person.

You will like these

Read these timelines and reports on the 1980 October Surprise:
http://www.fas.org/irp/congress/1992_cr/h920205-october-clip...

In 1992 former hostages pushed for a congressional hearing on the matter. The investigation was shut down.

"One resists the invasion of armies; one does not resist the invasion of ideas" Victor Hugo

exactly - Reagan only won

exactly - Reagan only won because of his secret dealings with Iran. I haven't studied his presidency extensively but he's not afraid to go against the grain when voicing an opinion.

Don't think it was Reagan

I believe the Surprise was was directed by CIA George and Reagan was stuck with it.

HW Bush was Reagan's "Dick Cheney"... Reagan was not supposed to get the nomination, HW was the heir to the throne. Reagan was an upstart and he was forced to take HW on as his VP.

"One resists the invasion of armies; one does not resist the invasion of ideas" Victor Hugo

I don't know exactly what

I don't know exactly what went on behind the scenes, but Reagan's Administration's actions were treason - just for politics, and just like in the case of George W. and Dick the blame has to be shared and put mostly on the person who's ultimately in charge for Iraq, domestic spying etc. even if he wasn't at the PNAC meetings.

we are not a democracy

we are not a democracy dimwit. At least you are not the worst President of all time anymore.

"we are not a democracy"

"dimwit"

While we may not agree with social aspects of Carter, Kucinich and others, at this point and time we should be standing and uniting on issues such as this.

I am not about making enemies by calling names during common causes. If the progressives/democrats refuse to listen to the Pauls, Amash, and others, they SHOULD be listening to the Carters, Kucinich, and others.

Yep, I voted you down.

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

if it walks like a Duck, and talks like a Duck...it is a squid?

if it is not easy to define the difference between a democracy and a republic.
then that person is part of the problem.

Alienation

Alienation will not win battles.

It took decades of Republicans, possibly like you, to vote these so-called republicans into office. This Republic has been dying, it did not happen overnight.

If you think that spouting absolutes will win the progressives over, you may as well wave your little white flag.

Curious, how Ron Paul himself has welcomed Dennis Kucinich to Ron Paul Institute For Peace and Prosperity.

As my other posts state, my goal is to reach the hearts and minds of the American people. Hopefully they will see that I am not an enemy, but one who promotes peace and Liberty. Conservative values such as mine take longer to digest.

To give credit where credit is due, yes, there is black and white difference between a Republic and a democracy. You are speaking to the choir.

Who is the problem, and who is the solver.

I am a technician and a male. that limits me.

in what I can do for the cause.
encouraging people to discover what they do not know, and to define their terminology is my effort....

did you give me a B or a B+?

Well,

that post gets an A :-)

I will never suggest moving center from right lol

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

so maybe he doesn't use the word . . .

in an appropriate 18th century way; yes, of course, *we* are meant to be a republic, etc., etc., etc.--

But he's right; he is completely right--

this nation has been destroyed, and he did a lot less to destroy it than the Republican presidents who served before and after him--

it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--

CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC ! ! !

The US is NOT a democracy. Sure, democratic elections aren't functioning.

Give me control of a nation's money and I care not who makes the laws - Mayer Amschel Rothschild

This old coot

never did realize the United States is a republic.

I will give a lot of credit

I will give a lot of credit to Carter; he was the last President who had the balls to not flex America's muscle...never fired a shot.

And he was crucified for it.

"Restrictions on free

"Restrictions on free speech"? I don't like the sound of that.

The citizens united verdict

The citizens united verdict is not really about free speech. That was the reasoning they used to give their corporate masters what they wanted. Citizens united essentially lets foreign money come into our country to persuade elections through PACS. And it declares that corporations are persons. Providing them protection under the constitution. So while congress is passing laws restricting your free speech to certain zones, the scotus is making sure foreign corporations are afforded rights.

He's talking about unlimited Corporate privilege: Bribery

What we have today is government by Bribery for the benefit of Corporations and the Elites.

Yes we do want to restrict that (Citizen's United Ruling ... which isn't about citizens at all)

No, we are perfectly functioning as a democracy

But that is all there is... The rule of law is out

"Truth is Treason in an Empire that lies" - Ron Paul

Educate the masses, and win in the end.

JC is so FOS

Here we are working to restore a republic and all JC can do is push for democracy. Islam does not want democracy.

campaign rules are are cinfusing because too many people don't get involved directly in government, rather they run around tagging buildings and hope someone else will do the job for them.

We have the best government money can buy.

Howcome every time I see a comment thumbed down and I click it

says "Granger?"

Because

freedom is popular.

I need unbiased, expert opinion. What are your thoughts on this?

DENNIS KUCINICH

Mr. Kucinich, the former US Representative from Ohio’s 10th Congressional district, is a leading antiwar and pro-civil liberties voice.

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

Kucinich is a socialist. I

Kucinich is a socialist. I don't care about his anti war or other stuff. You are either the whole package or you are not.

While I am absolute,

I do not deal with absolutes.

My work and goal is to change the hearts and minds of the American people, to help them understand the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Conservative values. To not slam things down their throats, but to help them understand what our Republic means, however long that it may take.

By your other posts, I am beginning to suspect that you may not be Liberty. I hope that I am wrong.

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

LOL (((((PAF)))))) You are so funny.

Surely you are not asking me for an unbiased, expert opinion.

You KNOW I am no expert, and you KNOW I am biased.

If you want my honest opinion ask for it, but to ask me for a unbiased, expert opinion is like asking a pig to lay an egg.

(( Granger! ))

You earned an up vote!

lol
