Feds Seize Gold Coins Worth $80 Million from Pennsylvania Family

"A federal judge has upheld a verdict that strips a Pennsylvania family of their grandfather’s gold coins — worth an estimated $80 million — and has ordered ownership transferred to the US government.

Judge Legrome Davis of the Eastern District Court of Pennsylvania affirmed a 2011 jury decision that a box of 1933 Saint-Gaudens double eagle coins discovered by the family of Israel Switt, a deceased dealer and collector, is the property of the United States.

In the midst of the Great Depression, then-President Franklin Roosevelt ordered that America’s supply of double eagles manufactured at the Philadelphia Mint be destroyed and melted into gold bars. Of the 445,500 or so coins created, though, some managed to escape the kiln and ended up into the hands of collectors.........."

great points and a good

great points and a good explanation.

I just want to add this comment to this thread to

see if it gets down voted after a court states government can exercise property rights with regards to gold coins. Gold coins stamped with intellectual property markings of the United States.

"Is the unit of account also voluntarily and mutually agreed to?

What is the relationship between a unit of account and value?

If the unit of account is claimed as intellectual property of a third party and not used in accordance with it's wishes, does a third party have any cause of action to exercise any property rights?"

Moral of the story: What government gives, it takes.

Free includes debt-free!

How do such stupid people get

How do such stupid people get so rich? Any fool should have known that those coins would be seized.

Making Gold ILLEGAL is in itself... ILLEGAL!!!

How can an Un-Constitutional order of making Gold illegal for Americans be legit???? That's my question.

The President (FDR) decides that Gold is no longer legal....

This is absurd. The government claims ownership over so much. And with all the NSA spying, these Judges can possibly be the victims of blackmail and make the WRONG decision.

Of course it's entirely possible he just sided with the government because he believes that to be so. But I would digress, so many years have gone by and for the government to still be claiming ownership, is just non-sense!!!

Wow that's fucking terrible. I heard about this even it first happened and I thought for sure they would win..

I love www.isidewith.com shared it with everyone I know. If anything they realize its not just a red and blue idiot running for reelection.

and now...

you know that when you find some PM's from 1933 you better melt that ish down before you sell it.

Even so, you'd think the statute of limitations should apply

Let this be a lesson to us all... DON'T SEEK HELP FROM THE GOVERNMENT!

If men are good, you don't need government; if men are evil or ambivalent, you don't dare have one.

This is actually pretty common

The 1933 St Gaudens are valued really high at auctions. Usually the winning bidder gets a knock on the door from the Secret Service and the coin is seized. I won't touch certain dates of gold coins from the US for that very reason.

Karl Marx (and FDR) would be PROUD!

Private property rights are not an element of Communism.

This was a COMMUNIST decision by that judge.

He was our 2nd Communist president (after Woodrow Wilson).

I'm not sure I fully

I'm not sure I fully understand the issue here. These coins as I see it were "stolen" from the mint instead of being melted down into gold bars???? in 1933. Is this considered private property at any time?

Gold was Outlawed

Gold double eagle test strikes were made for 1933 and they were supposed to all be melted down into the coin-gold bars that went to Fort Knox. None of the 1933 gold coins was ever legitimately released to the public. A mint employee made off with them before they could be melted. The few that made it out into the public circulated around the world, being bought up by super rich people. The mint has claimed since they were never supposed to be released into the public, they are all govt property and the employee who originally made off with them did so illegally. If they were a previous year, the government would not be able to claim them like they did.

That would make some sense.

That would make some sense. Just a question. How does anyone know who stole the coins? It's actually hard to believe a simple employee would do this on his own calculations. How about the possibility of the gov't itself or someone in the gov't or treasury who could value the coins by taking them out of production? Just like the gold stolen from twin towers or was it building 7, on Sept. 11th

What year is this again?

after all these years, not a single judge realizes an exec order
is not constitutional, nor has any standing?
there ain't nothing like illegal gotten gains, even after the fact
Just proves though, that most of them are hand picked, and it isn't for
us,it is all done to work against us

How low can the govt. go? Pretty low.

The government has a patent on pilfering, especially that "barbarous relic."

It's called "plunder". You

It's called "plunder". You can read about it in Bastiat's "The Law". It really doesn't matter if it's pirates or the "government" (just a different word for pirates, really)...

makes perfect sense too

When you consider that the kingdoms which ultimately gave rise to nations were all based on conquest as the claim to sovereignty. The governments of those kingdoms and nations all rely on institutional plunder. Legitimization of plunderers is baked into the cake as a willful objective that being the case.

There are some exceptions. People who voluntarily migrated together for non-plunder reasons to a destination that was lacking in indigenous people and/or plunder... they fared much better. Iceland would be a great example. Those people escaped kingdoms founded on plunder to live in a cold and barren land which had little to plunder except some fish. As a result, they are able to control their government.

People who live under a government that plunders are subjects, even if they are called something less dehumanizing... like 'citizen'.
