White House Opposes Amash's NSA Amendment / Call Congress!

Rep. Justin Amash has offered an amendment to HR 2397 (the DoD appropriations bill) that would limit NSA's collection of records to only individuals who are subject to investigations.

There is a full court press by the establishment to defeat the amendment. The Director of the NSA held two two-hour classified meetings today with House members. Speaker Boehner has spoken against the amendment. Now, the White House has issued a statement opposing the amendment.

The Amash Amendment will be debated and voted on Wednesday night.

PLEASE call or email your Congressman and urge them to support the Amash Amendment.

Office of the Press Secretary

Statement by the Press Secretary on the Amash Amendment

In light of the recent unauthorized disclosures, the President has said that he welcomes a debate about how best to simultaneously safeguard both our national security and the privacy of our citizens. The Administration has taken various proactive steps to advance this debate including the President’s meeting with the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, his public statements on the disclosed programs, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s release of its own public statements, ODNI General Counsel Bob Litt’s speech at Brookings, and ODNI’s decision to declassify and disclose publicly that the Administration filed an application with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. We look forward to continuing to discuss these critical issues with the American people and the Congress.

However, we oppose the current effort in the House to hastily dismantle one of our Intelligence Community’s counterterrorism tools. This blunt approach is not the product of an informed, open, or deliberative process. We urge the House to reject the Amash Amendment, and instead move forward with an approach that appropriately takes into account the need for a reasoned review of what tools can best secure the nation.

What About the Massie Amendment?

Any news on the Massie amendment to block military aid to Egypt? Will that be debated and voted on tonight as well? Does anyone know if we have the votes for either amendment to pass?

Ed Rombach

It passed by voice vote

There were concerns it would disrupt the Egypt-Israel alliance but I guess Massie alleviated their concerns.

Nice Rep Lookup/#s/script

Since the NSA's surveillance program surfaced a month ago I expect them to have the "boys in the lab" work on cooking up a "scheme" to now convince/show the American people that all this is worthwhile.
See this "BIG" arrest we made based on what we've learned about a future terrorist attempt by such and such group.
BUSTED for the whole world to "see" that their program has saved us all for great bodily harm....total BS for those that are wise and understand, but for the "sheeple"...well geez, looks like we need these guys and their program to "keep us safe" after all.
I call it their PLAN B to save their asses, now that the cat's out of the bag.

"This blunt approach is not the product of an informed, open, or deliberative process."

The irony in that statement alone.

George Zornick summed it up in less than 140 characters on Twitter:

"WH: Amash amdmt not result of "open" nor "deliberative" process. In other news, check CSPAN tmrw to see the Amash amndmt debated in House."
