Rand Paul in an Awkward Situation in Kentucky

Despite having already begun to launch (ridiculous) campaign ads against likely Democratic opponent Alison Lundergan Grimes, it now appears Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell may indeed face a rumored primary challenge for his Senate seat in 2014. The Daily Caller reports:

It looks like Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell is going to get a Republican primary challenger after all.

Louisville businessman Matt Bevin plans to kick off his campaign with eight stops across the Bluegrass state, starting Wednesday. He’s expected to campaign against McConnell from the right.

According to a media advisory, he plans to announce his intentions Wednesday for the Senate race at the Kentucky State Capitol in Frankfort. He’ll hold subsequent events in Newport and Louisville.

McConnell is a long time “big government” Republican, voting in favor of just about every awful bill that libertarians and genuine, small government conservatives have derided for years – TARP, NAFTA, No Child Left Behind, PATRIOT ACT, indefinite detention of Americans, et al. If you hate it, McConnell probably supported it.

Despite his horrendous record, McConnell has taken many steps in the last year in an attempt to avoid a “Tea Party” primary challenge from the right. Last year he hired Jesse Benton, Ron Paul’s former campaign manager, in an ill-advised maneuver to try to capture the grassroots. Perhaps McConnell hadn’t done his research, but Benton had drawn the ire of many of Ron Paul’s supporters for many reasons, up to and including allegations that he sabotaged Ron Paul’s 2012 Presidential Campaign.

I agree with most of what you

I agree with most of what you are saying. The thing you forget, is that most people are afraid of freedom. They want laws that tell them what to do and "take care of them" and "keep them safe." We are the exception to the rule, and Ron Paul did his job by waking us, 10%, up. The majority are never going to "vote" for freedom, its too much responsibility. The benefits of liberty policies will have to prove to work before the masses accept them.

Is Rand Paul "telling the truth" as you put it going to change the mind of the countless liberals I talk to who hated Bush but now are OK with the NSA reading every single one of their emails because it "keeps them safe"?(those are literally the words they use) As far as I can tell, he sounds exactly like Ron on the issue, if not more clear and well-spoken. They still think he is just some raving looney racist.

I'm so sick of that argument

Rand Paul is not an alarm clock.

"Rand Paul is not an alarm clock."

Nope, he isn't. But the people who should be holding all of our reps accountable should be alarm clocks.

Btw, after urging him to support the amendment, Mike Kelly voted NO on HR 2399. Did you bother to call your congressperson?

I'm so sick of hearing excuses.

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

Excuses?

Excuse me? When did we start answering and reporting to you?

"When did we start answering and reporting to you?"

The very second that you responded to my post. lol I am not into drama, so if that is your intent, have fun :-)

When I vote a representative in to represent me, I refuse to listen to excuses why he/she votes to the contrary. mike kelly is an obama lapdog, and I have NO interest whatsoever in why he votes AGAINST the Constitution.

note to self

If you reply to ProudAmerican's post, expect him to ask for a status report on your lobby efforts.

Rhysw

Do you have one? If so, I would appreciate any pointers that you could offer.

I have the fortune on living by the border, Ohio is a little further along than we are here in PA. I attend meetings in both states, we are just now starting to build a Liberty coalition here in my neck of the woods.

Rhysw, I didn't see your location in your profile, if you are in the area, give a shout, we have just as much fun as we do work :-)

Flipm flopping away

This is reminiscent of the Romney inconsistencies arising out of his efforts of trying to peddle what he thought was conservative ideas to a Republican audience that saw through his facade. We know how successful he was with that effort. Bob Dole and John McCain tried the same thing in their campaigns and we know how those efforts turned out too.

No matter what campaign managers try to do to repackage their candidates to appear to be conservatives, libertarian, constitutional or traditional, it can't be done. Leopards can't change their spots and politicians can't eradicate their personal narratives through memorization. No matter how hard they try to do it the efforts always fall flat when the candidate has to explain his views in interviews.

Ron Paul's answers were consistent because he was answering from years of dedication to his principles and not from a memorized narrative like Romney.

It only takes one to KEEP AMERICANS FREE. Know your duties & rights as a juror. Stop the unconstitutional conviction of innocents in federal custody. The Fully Informed Jury CALL 1-800-TEL-JURY www.fija.org IMMEDIATELY if not sooner. It's that important.

It's obvious what Rand is going to do...

Sit back, not comment, and let the system work. We all know Mconnell is a neo-con and Rand would probably rather have this other guy win. Rand will most likely release a statement, something to the effect of: "I wish both sides the best of luck during this primary and am excited about the outcome regardless..."

Um no

Rand has already "issued a statement", by endorsing McConnell.

Yikes

You're right - I didn't read the article in its entirety. I'm disappointed in Rand :(

What does this have to do with Rand?

I believe McConnel hired Benton because Benton understands though experience campaigns.

When you say, "grassroots", are you saying, "NON-REPUBLICANS"? Or are you saying, "Republican grassroots"? There is a difference, and while NON-REPUBLICAN grassroots have issues with Benton, as if Ron Paul, who never fired Benton, was not incharge of his own campaign, McConnel is far more concerned with REPUBLICANS, than NON-REPUBLICANS.

I still don't see what this article has to do with Rand. The "continues reading", and "Daily Caller", links will not open for me, so perhaps I missed something in not being able to access the entire article?

Links?

I just checked them both and they worked fine for me.

My general point is that through Rand's endorsement of McConnell, intended to shut down a primary challenge, he is an awkward spot supporting a certified Big Government Republican against a Tea Party challenge from the right.

I love this line...

"With several Kentucky Tea Party groups recently coming out against McConnell, things could get prettay prettaaaaaaay interesting in Kentucky"

Completely unprofessional but extremely effective. I laughed out loud when I read it.

McConnell is a shill, Rand is going to be in a tough situation, but, I don't feel bad for him, he made his own bed.

The question is, when will he feel he has enough political power to not cozy up to these people, IMO it's McConnell that has more to gain from this relationship. Rand should take a step back out of this one, not become tied up in others dirty laundry...

Ha, thanks

It may be "unprofessional" if I were writing for a scholarly journal, but I'm not, I'm writing for my own website and I'm my own boss, so it's professional enough for me!

I'm a huge Curb fan and Larry David's voice just popped into my head when I was writing.

Sensational headline...

and not much substance. A lot of speculation. Who knows how far McConnells challenger will go..

Im still behind Rand 100%

Baa goo Raand baa go Rand.

Baa goo Raand baa go Rand. Wake up you dam sheeple!

Stand With True Libertarians 2016!
Fire Rand!

Curious

as to where you stand, for stating that you did not want to cause problems or upset boehner when I suggested starting a movement to have him replaced.

P, will you now reconsider?

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

No.

After being involved for a long time, I kinda get where Rand is going. He does screw up sometimes. His philosophy is there, but his delivery is under microscopic scrutiny. Even I got pissed off today when I read about 'minority rights'.. that is not a son of Ron Paul speaking and that was a blatant fuck up. Rand should be sharper than that misstep.

I look at things long term. Could you enlighten me to anyone else with more conviction positioning themselves to run? If Ron trusts his son... can I trust him too?

This is a game of chess and not checkers. I want our side to fucking win.

That being said.. there is a saying... 'Politics makes strange bedfellows.' Understanding the personal value of the person next to you in this wicked game is absolutely essential to reaching any amount of success. You can have an idea that can change the world.. but if you do not have a network, then good luck. McConnell is a valuable ally. So is Boehner. We can use them to our advantage until we overpower their leadership. They play the game.. Rand can outsmart them, out position them and actually lead.

Both you two are youngsters.. or at least new to our movement. While I embrace your criticism, dont forget of those that sacrificed thousands of dollars and hours before you. Our heart never waivered either. Your passion is shared. True story.

Im not trying to sound condescending. I promise. We are all in this to win. May I ask that you look at the 5 principles you stand for and as long as Rand does not deviate from those principles, you have his back? Give him a break... Is he going to drone kill you? Is he going to allow his administration get away with lying under oath??

We need to pick our battles wisely. So far, Rand has displayed great leadership. Leadership that will hold people accountable for failure and law breaking. That is a step in the direction America needs to go.

I hope you catch my drift..

'Peace is a powerful message.' Ron Paul

I don't take it personally.

And I hope that you do not either. But your logic is flawed plain and simple. I may be new to the movement, but I have lived long enough to know, and know how to win.

For decades we have played it your way. It does not work. That is why we are in the shape that we are in. Unless the few in this Republic begin to stand on principal every step of the way, we all may as well raise the white flag and go back home.

There has never been a movement like this r3VOLution, dating back to the revolution. In some ways it is losing steam. In other ways, it is gaining.

It saddens me to know that while some locals/states are working diligently to replace their failed representatives, you will still be stuck and sucking to the likes of boehner. Knowing what I know, I would not be able to live with myself doing nothing about it. Again, nothing personal, but your logic is weak at best, and a cop out. Terms such as outsmarting, use to advantage, chess... they mean nothing other than simple naivety, and laziness.

I hope that you will ponder this, P. Nicholson. We are in this fight together. I just hope that we are on the same team :-)

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

Strange Bedfellows

I'm still surprised that Rand is such a different political animal from Ron

Hope Bevin wins

No clue who Bevin is, but he definitely can't be worse than McConnell. McConnell, Reid, Pelosi, and Boehner should all just leave.

The only thought that comes

The only thought that comes to mind is maybe Rand knows something about how JFK was actually elected. The establishment thought he was "one of them," and that is the only reason they let him win. Once he got into office, he flipped the script. Rand knows he will not win without at least a faction of us combined with the old rino's, so he is walking a fine line trying to appease everybody with his drone filibusters and simultaneously backing mcconnell. I know this comment will get criticized. Have a nice day.

Actually

This may surprise you as the writer of the article in question but I agree with you, I *do* believe that's what Rand may *think* he is doing.

I also don't believe that simply 'becoming President" on its own is a goal that advances liberty, if it is not achieved by carrying the right message. Evaluating what Rand is doing - as a libertarian - is different from understanding what he is doing, as a politician.

Crucial point

Thanks for making it.

The notion that a libertarian conning his way to the presidency without changing the ideology of the nation first is a viable solution is illogical at best.

I just can't buy into the idea of a covert ideology presidential candidate working for about a hundred different reasons. It's a fantasy. Sometimes fantasies are nice because indulging them feels good, but reality always reasserts itself.

First the people must be awakened to the truth of what the establishment has done, is doing to them, then they may be motivated to actually get behind individuals that would see the republic restored. Any other attempt to achieve our goals is illegitimate and any advances made will be short lived.

Think Ron Paul - an idea whose time has come, etc. The ideas time doesn't come through tricks and deception.

Why not?

That's literally what every single other elected official has done with the exception of Ron Paul and possibly a handful of others in American history.

Why not have it work for our side?

The sheep don't know and don't care anyway, never will. Who cares about the sheep. They'll keep voting for Bush, Obama, forever. Look at history.

This is a realistic chance to get people who respect constitutional rights and limitations on government back in control of Washington DC without having a bloody revolution.

PEOPLE OPPOSING TYRANNY - Real Grass Roots!
Are you a POT or a PET - Person Embracing Tyranny?

If he, as President, is able

If he, as President, is able to do one single thing, such as end the drug war, legalize competing currencies, end foreign aid, veto the Patriot Act/NDAA, etc. etc. If he does nothing else but one of these many things, it will advance the cause of liberty more than anything to date in my lifetime.

I agree completely

But can he actually do that? One man, as President? And if he intends to actually do any of that, will the establishment allow him anywhere close to the throne?
