Collateral MurderSubmitted by Linda Cross on Tue, 07/30/2013 - 13:34
When I first saw this video, from July 12, 2007, released by Wiki-leaks in 2010, I imagined that the soldiers who acted on false intelligence, believing they were shooting at insurgents, would be reprimanded for their actions. Especially for their attitudes, running over human bodies and laughing about it, shooting at those who were trying to help the injured... Or, perhaps military commanders, higher up the chain would be called on the table, for training their soldiers to react as if in a video game, and murder innocent civilians indiscriminately. Maybe there would be a wider discussion about the actions of the US military in Iraq. Surely the outrage of American Citizens would come into play and end this horrendous, senseless war, started by government lies and continued without purpose.
I never suspected that our government would instead arrest the messenger. Bradley Manning was the Whistle blower who released this video to WikiLeaks, along with many other documents. Those documents were released to expose the atrocities of war.
How could I believe that my country would hold him in prison and torture him, stripping him naked and holding him in solitary confinement, month after month, waiting for the world to forget about Bradley Manning and the evidence of war-crimes that he made public. The insurgents that day, and the insurgents now, are the American Citizens who must be kept in the dark to prevent them from objecting about what is being done in their name. The "weapons" spotted that day were the cameras of journalists, the same weapons the "insurgents" continue to use today.
Re-watch the video again, as the punishment of Bradley Manning is decided upon. Watch the video, weep, get angry, and never forget the sacrifice made so that you might know the truth.
Bradley Manning was acquitted of the charge of "aiding the enemy" and also of the charge of espionage which was related to this video (see correction), but he was found guilty of many other charges. "The judge, Col. Denise Lind, found Manning guilty of most of the more than 20 crimes he was charged with. She also acquitted him of one count of the espionage act that stemmed from his leak of a video that depicted a fatal U.S. military airstrike in Farah, Afghanistan"
CORRECTION: Bradley Manning was NOT acquitted of guilt for the video "Collateral Murder". He had pleaded guilty to that charge. He was acquitted of a charge for a video from an Afghanistan air strike that killed dozens of civilians in Garani of the Farah province. That video has never been released to the public. Don't breath a sigh of relief when you see the headlines "MANNING ACQUITTED OF ESPIONAGE AND AIDING THE ENEMY!" The reality is that Manning was found guilty of espionage and other charges, which accumulate into a possible prison sentence of over 100 years! Manning, under duress, pleaded guilty to several charges. The government, with the whip of the news media, want you to believe that everything is OK, move along now, nothing to see here...Don't you believe it for a minute. Short of a Revolution, Manning might never be free again. The sentence will be determined today.
