With more leaked details about the NSA's surveillance systems being published, Director Gen. Keith Alexander offers an unapologetic defense at the Black Hat security conference.

** WTF?? Whatever happened to anti-authoritarian hackers?? Note the sociopathic-nerd enablers of tyranny lick the boots of a scum by CHEERING & CLAPPING LOUDER, when Alexander replies "I have, you should, too!" back to a heckler shouting "read the Constitution!"

This is WHY we have tyrannies: insecure nerds who create and build technologies/infrastructure for their very own tools of oppression, to be used against them, in the not-too-distant-future.

Security Consultant Heckles NSA Head: Shouts “Freedom!”; “Read The Constitution!”
Gen. Alexander claims “We stand for freedom”

The NSA head General Keith Alexander faced a hostile crowd Wednesday while attempting to defend mass surveillance programs at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas.

Around 30 minutes into his speech, Alexander claimed that the NSA had “stopped thirteen terrorist related activities in the United States,” flashing up a slide that stated the NSA had prevented fifty-four worldwide terrorist events. “Our nation takes stopping terrorism as one of the most important things.” Alexander stated, prompting a man in the crowd to shout “Freedom!”

“Exactly,” Alexander replied. “We stand for freedom.”

Forbes reports that the security consultant, later identified as 30-year-old Jon McCoy, then fired back “Bullshit!” to smatterings of applause from some of the crowd.

“Not bad,” Alexander responded, adding “But I think what you’re saying is that in these cases, what’s the distinction, where’s the discussion and what tools do we have to stop this.”

“No, I’m saying I don’t trust you!” McCoy shouted back.

Another person in the crowd then joined in, stating “You lied to Congress. Why would people believe you’re not lying to us right now?”

Looking stern and visibly annoyed, Alexander responded “I haven’t lied to Congress.”

I have to give General Alexander some respect here...

He is attempting to initiate an honest dialog, one he states that he believes needs to occur. I think its notable that he isn't speaking to a normal audience here, or making a general MSM press statement. He is speaking to the kind of people that make it possible for the NSA do do what they do. People that would be very difficult for the General to bull shit.

I also think its important to note that same people are more like you and I than some of the other commenters think. I guarantee you that most people in that room, the so called nerds, are people that literally have made it possible for us to secure our own communications. Many of these people are probably intimately responsible for many of the great technologies we enjoy today. And most of them are staunch advocates and for security, privacy, and open source software. And I think my point is nicely accentuated by some of the comments made/shouted.

I can speak to this because I am not that far removed from these so called 'nerds' being a 'nerd' software developer myself.

Ron Paul - Intellectual hero

he is a war criminal...

He is a war criminal, and he's not talking to that many technical people. Probably the only technical person in the room yelled at him. Everyone else that had a soul didn't bother to attend Admiral twat-waffle's spittle-fest. I know I wouldn't listen to that empty starched uniform unless I was completely and utterly drunk out of my mind...but then I would have done something stupid like throwing a pie at him and gotten arrested. So, there you go, takeaway: The only people who will listen to him are devout followers.

It's mostly sales people. It's Blackhat for christ's sake. You'll find more technical people at CES (consumer electronics show).

He asks us to trust he and

He asks us to trust he and his colleagues, but he stretches the truth about the congressional and court oversight which doesn't really exist given the intelligence committee membership, rubber stamp history of the FISA court and restrictions on public access to the workings of the programs which is necessary for debate.

He says that there is oversight in the intelligence bureaucracy itself, but we know from the Guardian reports that there is little to none.

I'm an IT nerd myself, but I'm sorry, my trust has to be earned when it comes to govt spy agencies, and Gen Alexander did not earn it here.

I'm deeply saddened and disturbed that my colleagues are so naive.

yup.

no room for the Nuremberg Defense, at our current epoch in history that we're clearly on a particular trajectory in.

none whatsoever.

sure it's been happening for a long time, but we're near that Point Entropy; there's a reason why everything is surfacing now, and the tyrants are literally acting in desperation like they're in their last death throes, like all empires before the Fall.

what it will be 'that' 'trigger'? when? who knows: we all know some 'big shoe' will drop that will precipitate something quick. better for the sheeple to stop kidding themselves, and find some semblance of anti-'authori-teh' antidote, whatever that maybe for them, each at an individual level, the proverbial 'critical mass' will happen sooner and whatever comes may have a chance of a peaceful transition, NOT 'restoration.'

hopefully an American Revolution 2.0/Renaissance, than the French Revolution...

"Officially"/"Legally" he did not lie...

....even though he ACTUALLY did lie. In a court of law it would be found that "legally" he did not lie.

So much for legal justice these days.

God knows he lied. He wont be able to escape that.

I used to know a guy who was

I used to know a guy who was a hacker. Most of the real hackers with advanced abilities dont go to events like this or for that matter show themselves at all. Going to these events put you in a spotlight and if the gov knows what kind of things you can do they will watch you very closely. As for working for the gov, some dont have a choice. They are screwing around with breaking into systems etc in college then suddenly guys with suits show up with the option of working for the gov for six figures or going to federal prison...

We all share this eternally evolving present moment- The past and future only exist as inconsequential mental fabrications.

yeah, always wondered about the true nature of attendees at the

annual BlackHat and DEFCON, too.

but, from what I understand, everyone from former 'convicted' hackers like Kevin Mitnick to those who currently work in between the NSA and DARPA nexus to 'tinkerers' all attend, regardless. plus, these conferences have always been a recruiting tool for the NSA industry.

one sad fact of life is, unfortunately, a lot of brilliant people are very insecure, and often hide their high insecurity with supreme externalities; many nerds, especially those that I call the "Sociopathic Nerds" whom always end up working in govt and/or MIC, in fact, LOVE the notion that they work in super duper double superduper double secret govt labs, agencies, etc.

so, obviously, I'm extrapolating based on those I have met, and similar type of individuals, but if I had to guess, the attendees are probably pretty wide-ranging.

unless they've done like ATM/CreditCard/ID theft, I see no reason why they would actively avoid these conferences: my understanding is that most hackers really do believe they're 'invincible' from the likes of govt hackers. also, when else will they get a chance to directly gauge their OPFOR in person? lol

which reminds me, apropos of this topic: frankly, in the 'cyberwarfare/nat.security' context, the notion that other nations have trained hackers that can actually take down organically 'grown' hacker in the more computer savvy cultures is laughable. You NEED to have a "HACKER CULTURE" to produce truly savvy hackers; they need a vast array of 'social engineering' experiences to get around people, because other than encryption the only real weak point to exploit in any hack, is the human factor. And, such experience is only gained if they regularly have a chance TO hack more 'free-market' banking/trading/etc. operations. So, in particular, when the US Govt states that North Korean hackers did ____, blah, blah, blah, it's F'ng laughable.

It's even less credible when S. Korean govt says that NK hackers out did theirs: S. Korea has arguably the most saturated internet and computer culture in the world. The notion that ANY hacker produced in NK govt center would outsmart an organically self-taught tinkerer, typical of ALL hackers worldwide, from S. Korea, is utterly ridiculous.

just one more govt hype bunk, debunked.

This man's entire talk is filled with LIES!

And Edward Snowden PROVED it beyond a shadow of a doubt.

What a psychopathic LIAR!

33:40 That phone number in

33:40

That phone number in the email, was linked to a unknown FBI phone number in New York City. The NYC # was linked to a bunch of terrorist groups.

He just admitted what we already know.

LOL

Blah.

meekandmild's picture

which video and whats the time mark to see this?

I don't want to listen to government lairs.

the entire premise for the NSA believing that the . . .

things it is doing are justified is that:

--American empiricism is justifiable

--Terrorists are insane/fanatic, not righteously indignant--

If you believe that the empire-building is wrong and that most 'so-called' terrorism comes from blow-back, this entire non-apology is ridiculous--

it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--

yup: "this entire non-apology is ridiculous"

my real question is, considering how smart and street-smart most hackers tend to be (in my few experience 'bumping' into them), how many of them actually bought into that obvious propaganda recruitment spiel.

sickening part is, how MANY 'seemed' (since I couldn't see if they played any audio tricks, or gauge audience's visual response, in between the hecklers exchange) to be clapping and cheering louder FOR Alexander, when he retorted back "I have, you should, too."

you really wonder whatever happened to the natively rebellious American spirit. lawd have mercy.
