Canadians smack down Canadian Government over Snowden

Our Government own Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) published a report this morning
"Canada criticizes Russian asylum for leaker Snowden"
Foreign affairs minister Baird calls Russia 'an outlier in the G8'

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2013/08/02/baird-snowden...

The comments section went nuts with over 99% trashing CBC and our Federal Government.

Just thought I would share a proud moment.

Enjoy the ride.

Thanks for sharing....I'm

Thanks for sharing....I'm heartened by Canadian reaction to Baird's obtuse allegiance to American rulership.

CBC

People who comment on the CBC website would be overwhelmingly Liberal or NDP. The truth is that if they were in power they'd be doing the same thing, although more quietly. Canada no longer has an independent foreign policy nor are we ever likely to have one in the future.

> Canada no longer has an

> Canada no longer has an independent foreign policy

We never really had one

Well....perhaps not.

We were however able to exert our influence in positive ways, such as when Mulroney defied the US and UK by supporting sanctions against South Africa back in the Eighties. It may or may not have just been posturing but it did have a positive effect. You cannot imagine anything like that happening now.

It's unfortunate the example

It's unfortunate the example you had to use was the infamous Mulrony and his backroom sordid deals ie Toronto airport allegations of illicit bribery. Was that ever resolved?

Iraq invasion

Sure... Jean Chretien refused to support the invasion of Iraq.

Overall we can only weasel our way out of getting involved in US led aggression sometimes if someone in our government can find a credible excuse to say no. I believe the US government coerces ours in ways we peons never hear about. If we send troops then some Canadian interest gets some crumbs, and we refuse then some Canadian interest gets hurt.

Carrots and sticks. I bet the stick always outweighs the carrot.

We've only had the pretense of actual sovereignty since the beginning of WWII where for the first time we declared war for ourselves. I'm older than the Constitution Act, and I'm not that old.

Effectively we only have sovereignty in so far as the US administration allows it. Just like most of the other former British colonies.

Yes we all know that about

Yes we all know that about our media. I've given up posting on G&M forum... They just bury the article and reintroduce it under another headline until they get the responses they want...but the outrage over Baird's obtuse allegiance to American counterfeit leadership all transcends party lines. This is a right and wrong issue universal to humanity.Shame on Canada for not being able to give sanctuary when needed...But I long forgot Canada does not have freedom of political or moral thought or expression.

You have to give Harper credit

He is just as enthusiastic about his role as stooge with Obama in power as he was when Bush was in charge. Even Obama's reticence about the Keystone pipeline has not deterred him.

Yes I do... I want to think

Yes I do... I want to think that Harper is an unwilling player...a thorn in their sides ie the Kyoto Accord. He's smarter than Obama just not as cunning, illegal or a Chicago street fighter. I liked Harper's disdain for the recent illegal RCMP activity breaking and entering without authorization into evacuees homes in High River and "stealing their property..for safe keeping they say!! So who are RCMP taking their orders from?

RCMP

The Federal government condemned the confiscation of weapons in HR and yet the Provincial Conservatives defended the RCMP. they don't seem to be reading from the same script any longer.

So who's running the show?

So who's running the show? ..Ontario is lost. McGuinty's liberals have destroyed rural Ontario...We are bankrupt. They are instituting the voting machines in small towns without a whimper or a question. In our small town we had a police check point which held up considerable traffic...No reason given.

Would a party that advocated

Independence from American influence ala the UK's UKIP find an audience in Canada?

Zak my friend

Sadly here in Canada there is prosperity that fuels apathy.

No housing crash... to the contrary...

are you coming for a visit?

cbc.ca censors

The CBC sensors comments all the time for purely political reasons. It's disgusting. You never know when your conversations there will be arbitrarily stopped. Other users can see no indication of the censorship. On the other hand, if your views agree with the reporters you're free to break all of the official posting rules including using profanity and directing personal insults at other users.

CBC also shuts down comments entirely to stop criticism and often disables comnents on articles likely to draw criticism.

If you want to feel a taste of how the Chinese internet is go spend some time on the CBC web site.

then try the Globe and Mail

then try the Globe and Mail Forum....It's the same thing.

That headline really rubs me the wrong way

Canada as the noun. Which? The Canadian government? The Canadian people? I guess it's not like here where U.S. is more clearly the government in a headline.

what?

canadians (the people) smack down the canadaian gov (the gov of canada)
where's the confusion?
deacon

If we deny truth before your very eyes, then the rest of what we have to say,is of little consequence

I'm talking about the headline

of the article linked, not this post, as in using the word "Canada" synonymously with Canadian government, or even more bizarre, with Baird, is presumptuous.

Defend Liberty!

deacon's picture

oh,

are you suggesting it is redundantly redundant? :)
deacon

If we deny truth before your very eyes, then the rest of what we have to say,is of little consequence

no no

It must be referring to me, personally. :)

Wow

I "know" somebody famous!
