On The Convenient Non-Event of August 4, 2013Submitted by mungke on Sun, 08/04/2013 - 20:56
In recent weeks, there has been light shed on the over-reaching nature of the security apparatus and how it unlawfully targets US citizens under the FISA court programs, which were supposedly designed to target foreign nationals. Congressmen have been speaking out, to the extent they can, saying that Snowden was telling the truth. The spinmeisters have been working over time to convince us the boogeymen of Al Quada, though defeated by our billions and trillions of dollars and thousands of lives, are still a threat that must be dealt with.
Then, all the sudden, it is "reported" that these programs led to "intercepting" communications that show that al quaeda was going to launch an attack on our embassies. So, to emphasize the big deal nature of it all, all north african and middle eastern embassies are shut down. And a big deal is broadcast all over the international media. Then, nothing happens. Victory is declared.
There are a few problems with this. First, we've been told that Al Quada was reduced to a few scattered groups of cave dwelling madmen and no longer a credible threat. Mission Accomplished and all that. So what gives? Did they start taking vitamins? We'll never know. But now the boogeyman is supposedly back and capable.
But what bugs me is that, if this isn't completely fabricated (which is the most likely explanation for this whole charade to my way of thinking) what kind of message does this send? That a couple of cave dwellers can get on their cell phones and say a few key words and then sit back and laugh as we shut down? That we can't just be on alert and keep our facilities safe?
I haven't heard it said yet, but I am willing to bet that there is some blowhard running around congress already saying that this shows how we need to be getting groped at airports, getting spied on without warrants as us citizens, getting exposed to mor eand more police state nonsense on a daily basis in the land of the purported free. Let's collect their quotes here. I bet McCain will issue a statement along these lines, he's a given, so is Peter King, and several others. It'll be funny to keep track of their gibberish on this issue.
