My (and Ed Snowden's) Email Provider Shut Down

From Lavabit.com:

My Fellow Users,

I have been forced to make a difficult decision: to become complicit in crimes against the American people or walk away from nearly ten years of hard work by shutting down Lavabit. After significant soul searching, I have decided to suspend operations. I wish that I could legally share with you the events that led to my decision. I cannot. I feel you deserve to know what’s going on--the first amendment is supposed to guarantee me the freedom to speak out in situations like this. Unfortunately, Congress has passed laws that say otherwise. As things currently stand, I cannot share my experiences over the last six weeks, even though I have twice made the appropriate requests.

What’s going to happen now? We’ve already started preparing the paperwork needed to continue to fight for the Constitution in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. A favorable decision would allow me resurrect Lavabit as an American company.

This experience has taught me one very important lesson: without congressional action or a strong judicial precedent, I would _strongly_ recommend against anyone trusting their private data to a company with physical ties to the United States.

Stalin and Hitler must be smiling from their graves.

Charging people with crimes against the state is one of the tactics of tyrants as is suppression of free speech. Looks like they threatened crimes against the state in order to drive away this vehicle used for free speech.

With each passing day, it seems more and more clear to me that we are following the same path that did Nazi Germany and Communist USSR. We have not yet reached the degree of repression that Hitler and Staling achieved, but then it takes time to develop the legal structure, install the willing order taking personnel, condition and intimidate the citizenry, disarm the citizenry, and build the gulags and concentration camps. When government becomes the enemy of freedom it gets blowback, and responds with increasingly repressive measures, which generates more blowback.

All these thugs in power need to do to understand what is coming is to be able to read. There is anti-government sentiment expressed all over the internet. Surely the can use the same analytical techniques that private researchers and prognosticators use. Surely they see the impending financial, economic, social, and governmental collapse and have their own plans to retain power and control.

"Bend over and grab your ankles" should be etched in stone at the entrance to every government building and every government office.

Sic Semper Tyrannis

Imagine the lifeless, bullet-riddled corpse of Il Duce (The Captain) swinging from a post in the city square as people beat it with bats, screamed profanities at it, and spat upon it. Thus is it always for tyrants.

Cheshire cat grin from hell

I agree with you about nearly everything in your comment.

That may be only a matter of perspective, IMO. Some segments of amerika are already feeling that repression. Amerika is much larger and more diverse than Germany was. The FEMA camps are already built, the prison system serves the purpose in the meantime.

The thugs-in-power have known this was coming for a long time, it seems to me, and are actively encouraging the rebellion. They will use it to obtain more control as the media controlled masses clamor for protection against "something". The path is the same as the Nazi's, but the stride is different.

Prohibition taught them something after all (and us nothing). They saw the power gained by the mafia during prohibition. They enhanced and stepped it up with a nice "war on drugs", and that is the base funding of their empire.

The main trick they learned was to make drugs "immoral", in addition to illegal; that's what obscures the "concentration camp mentality" of the prison system. 60% of prisoners are imprisoned for "drug offenses", many of them non-violent.
