Exclusive: Edward Snowden Says Media Being Misled 'About My Situation'

NEW YORK –- National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden wants to set the record straight after individuals associated with his father have, in his words, "misled" journalists into “printing false claims about my situation.”

In an emailed statement to The Huffington Post, Snowden said that neither his father Lon Snowden, his father’s lawyer Bruce Fein, nor Fein's wife and spokeswoman Mattie Fein “represent me in any way.”

“None of them have been or are involved in my current situation, and this will not change in the future,” Snowden said of his father and the Feins. “I ask journalists to understand that they do not possess any special knowledge regarding my situation or future plans, and not to exploit the tragic vacuum of my father's emotional compromise for the sake of tabloid news.”

Mattie Fein told The Wall Street Journal on Thursday that Lon Snowden’s legal team doesn’t trust Guardian columnist Glenn Greenwald, the journalist at the center of the NSA story, or WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy organization that has advised Snowden in Russia. Fein also claimed Greenwald was trying to shop around an exclusive interview with Snowden for seven figures. Greenwald told the Journal Fein's claim was "defamatory."

Snowden said he'd like to correct the record regarding legal advice he’s received.

A statement was sent to The Huffington Post by Edward Snowden. NOT to RT.
RT is essentially reposting the HP article!

The problem isn't the father or Snowden.

As soon as I saw that Bruce Fein was involved I knew something was up. You wonder why there was nothing done in regards to the blatant fraud against Ron Paul in his last campaign? No law suits, no complaints, nothing. Fein was the campaign's "Legal Adviser" hired by Benton. I called it here when Benton hired Fein -that he's there to make sure that nothing is done in case there was fraud- and I also called it here when I first saw Fein advising Snowden's father: he's there to sabotage. This guy is AIPAC through and through that has fooled many here, and also Ron Paul, into thinking that he's an ally. This guy's bad news, poison!

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom — go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, an

You may be right...

because this sure sounds like sabotage. Maybe Lon needs to drop Fein and go it alone or with another lawyer.

The father

seems to be causing problems. And why is Fein's wife involved at all? To me, they (Feins) come across as disinformation specialists; why would they say that stuff about Greenwald and Poitras? Only to create problems of sorts. I wish Lon Snowden would just shut up and leave his son alone. He must be used to being in control.

I was finally able to get to it...

I was having weird network behavior. I'm guessing there was a slowdown on the NSA servers that was causing the delay.

The Philosophy Of Liberty -

Here are the most pertinent points from a WSJ page save:

WSJ: Divisions Widen Among Snowden's Supporters:

Mr. Snowden and his father, Lon Snowden, spoke for about two hours via an encrypted Internet chat program, said two lawyers who helped arrange the contact. The elder Mr. Snowden participated in the chat from the Washington, D.C., office of his attorney, Bruce Fein, and was connected to his son with the help of Ben Wizner, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, who is involved in coordinating Mr. Snowden's legal defense in the U.S. What they discussed wasn't disclosed.

A person close to the situation said Lon Snowden participated in the chat against the advice of his lawyer, Mr. Fein, who nonetheless helped arrange it.

More fractious is the relationship among Lon Snowden, WikiLeaks and Mr. Greenwald. Mr. Fein's wife and spokeswoman, Mattie Fein, said Lon Snowden's legal team doesn't trust the intentions of Mr. Greenwald or WikiLeaks and worry they are giving Edward Snowden bad advice.

"The thing we have been most concerned about is that the people who have influence over Ed will try to use him for their own means," Ms. Fein said. "These guys have their own agenda here and we aren't so sure that it has Ed's best interest in mind."

Mr. Greenwald called the Feins' concerns ridiculous and said they had no standing in the matter as they have never had direct contact with Mr. Snowden. "They have no connection to Ed," Mr. Greenwald said. "Snowden is not 14 years old. He is a very strong-willed, independent, autonomous adult and is making all his own choices about who he deals with and who represents him."

The comments...

at HuffPo are flat out disgusting.

Regarding that second link - about the NSA regularly breaking its rules - I think we've got a slow boil going here, much like the Nixon Watergate scandal. I wasn't there for it - I was only 5. I remember my dad watching it on a tiny black & white TV, and understanding it was grave. There were anchors back then called Harry Drinkwater, and Roger Mudd. What funny names they were to a kindergartner.

But reading back over it, as I've mentioned before, in The Time of Illusion, the Watergate scandal really was a slow boil. Woodward & Bernstein were breaking those stories in the Post for over a year before people really started paying attention.

But somehow, the snowball got rolling. And it coincided with a tremendous bear market (Down 50% overall, if I recall). And a corrupt Fed Chairman (Arthur Burns). And a once-popular president. And an unjust war. And a whistleblower (Daniel Ellsburg). And a long, hot summer. And eventually it all boiled over.

And I just find it fascinating how all the same ingredients are back in place. A little different yes, but substantially the same.

Once this bear market starts rolling - look out.

He's the man.

Appreciate it, Michael!

I enjoyed your historical comparisons and looked for even more, but could only find this decent, albeit gram/paragraphically challenging piece with some good points:

Watergate – Snowdengate: Differences and Similarities. 40 years of walking in (the) desert in search of democracy by Dmitry MININ | 20.07.2013

… He (Snowden) destroyed the deeply rooted myth about US struggle, (including the Obama administration's) aimed at freedom for all. The global crusade to protect democracy has turned into global eavesdropping and monitoring. PRISM looks like the pervading Big Brother from Orwell’s 1984. The disclosures have also inflicted great damage on IT Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, Facebook, YouTube, Skype, AOL, Apple and others. (4) These companies suffer financial losses and their reputations are undermined. That’s why, no matter all the evidence produced, they stubbornly refuse to admit the fact of close cooperation with US special services giving away the information on clients.

The main difference between Snowdengate and Watergate is that back then it was one political party they were conducting subversive actions against the rival, now the two are together violating people’s privacy worldwide. The snooping takes place no matter who is in power; it has flourished during Obama’s tenure matching well with and becoming an element of his «soft power» strategy. It has intensified to a larger extent in comparison with the time there was less talk about democracy. Hypocrisy and duplicity have dominated the scene, something Snowden could not stand anymore.

Financial planner for over two decades

If there is a bear market it is because that is what the Rothschild central bankers engineer and not because of momentum.

I know its hard to believe that statement.

But got to wrap your head around the fact these zio mafia have the ability to digitiz unlimited fiat digital counterfeit curencies. They can and do own most everything that is corporate and in the market.

So a market collapse will be just what the wiz of OZ conducts. In fact its the third cycle of this financial debt slave ponzy scam. Each cycle culminates with unsurmountable false national debts and Genocide they like to call war to make us believe its not a planed mass genocide.

I once believed as you do but no more. In fact I ended my career back in 2007.

A Bear Market?

Just call up a chart of any of the major indexes since 2009... this is NOT a bear market.

Now how the "engineering" of the crash of '08 happened... can be speculated... but this one is likely just consequences of poor (stupid) policies, and Ron Paul railed against the stupidity of them for years. Told them what would happen... oy!

Now, in the minds of the public... this is a recession. 2008 hurt a lot of folks that never experienced a "down" market. Didn't even consider that it could seriously go down again. 8 months into 2013 and the broad market is up about 17%... mid and small caps are up over 20%. The public is only just waking up to the opportunity they have missed. The bravest have started the flow of monies back to Wall Street if July values I have heard are to be believed.

Trillions were given to banks, which have used them to increase their reserves... and they are lending them back to the FED to earn the 0.5% on FED Deposits. That's the only reason those trillions have not led to outright inflation... the money is sitting there. The saddest thing about all this is that the "Financial sector" has led the way in this market uptrend. For the foreseeable future, they are too big to fail... so moral hazard is OFF.

If you are thinking that this is bear market... please reconsider. The evidence suggests otherwise... notwithstanding the public sentiment toward the markets, investing, Banking and Wall Street.

So much smart talk but all bs

The money is digitized the market is bought with digitized money. Those who control the digitized creation of money own the shares of the corporations that make up the market. The market is controlle. If not it would be crashed and stay crashed a long long time ago. Its all part of the puppet show to keep people from understanding the Rothschild family crimes.

We cant talk about options and annuities and mutual funds etc.. the foundation curency is counterfeit... the market is counterfeit.... It dont take brain science nor rocket surgery to figure it out. You talk about details inside the home as the roof is caving in. It sure makes you sound smart though.

My comments were aimed at the claim of a Bear Market condition

Not the underlying cancer of the whole money system and such. I agree with you that the system is corrupt... but a bear market is a term reserved for declining stock/commodity prices accross a broad segment of the markets. This week marked the first time in '13 that the market has strung more than 4 days of decline. 'Nuff said.

You have a great point - it's

You have a great point - it's never one thing that causes change. Multiple things coalesce, and if the timing is right it causes things to happen, to the point where it's hard to say what exactly caused what, or it's a matter of opinion, because there's so much stuff happening.

Michael I think you are correct and there is no way to stop it

I graduated HS in 72 so I was a bit aware of what was going on at the time.

One big difference between then and the decades that followed was total public apathy. People assumed the idea that as long as their lives 'improved' the government could do whatever it wished.

If your premise is correct, and I believe it is, and it coincides with the awakening that seems to have started early in 2007, the status quo of complacency is in trouble.

Business as Usual (concerning the last few decades) is about to become a thing of the past.

interesting analogy

Let's all hope you turn out to be right. We need to stop this in its tracks or there is no turning back from our world becoming a 1984 dystopia.

“The welfare of the people in particular has always been the alibi of tyrants.” — Albert Camus

Poor Snowden

Looking forward to all the movies that will come out about this, in all their different versions of truth.

Oh Granger, you are so correct.

If only Snowden would have followed your path, his contribution might have mattered.

Poor guy has no morals, is in it for the movie deals and doesn't understand the purity of heart like you do.

What would DP do w/o you setting us straight?

God Bless you

I don't see it like the rest of you

Just my past experience with issues.. to me, the USA spying has gone International.. the big news should be that we are now being spied on by Russia, China, Jpan, Germany, England, India.. the National Security was already done, washed up.. so they revealed national spying,You don't want it.. you don't got it.. no one has your back. We are being spied on internationally.. meaning it's not sovreign.. meaning a Russian spy can say that you said or did something, and it's your word against someone in another country.. if you think affording a local attourny is hard.. try affording one who has passed a global bar.

The government is not stupid, they don't take away or reveal unless they have replaced it.. they don't eliminate.. they mutate.

no blessing will ever help

no blessing will ever help granger.

Ron Paul 2016

Gods Blessing can do wonders

But only to people that have a personal relationship with Him.

Granger hasn't woken up to that, yet (In my opinion). She sees everything as a War. Been that way since she surfed, by her own writing.

I'm not her judge, but she has one whether she admits it or not.

Maybe I should explain something about surfing

Surfing is like making love with God.

wolfe's picture

I am not sure...

That I have ever heard anything creepier in my life... And I don't lead the most sanitized life so that really is saying something.

Even as an atheist, it had that impact on me.

The Philosophy Of Liberty -

you never surfed

so you have no idea what a soul surfer is.. soul surfers don't sell out to corporations, and even the highest paid corproate surfers know, the soul surfer rules their homebreak, and we make treaties with other soul surfers, so when the swells are hitting other massive spots, we surf there, and respect the soul surfers there who rule those breaks.. and to be honest, I was very kind to new surfers, encouraged them, taught them a few tricks even, but most important is RESPECT. RESPECT for yourself, RESPECT for the water, RESPECT for the forces (wind, tide, moon, sun, elements, ocean life....) RESPECT is a HUGE part of surfing.

How creepy is that?

wolfe's picture

You said...

You said it was like sex with god. That is f'ing creepy.

As far as "not selling out". You are a member of the GOP and faithful to them, you "endorsed" Romney. The GOP, Romney, etc are corporate shills...

So you claim to not be a sell out? Interesting.
