60 years ago today: CIA overthrows Iran's democratically elected leader

August 19th, 1953, 60 years ago today, the CIA overthrew Iran's Prime Minister, Muhammad Mossadegh, and installed a dictator sympathetic to US imperialism, Shah Pahlavi. The coup would prove to be one of the worst US foreign policy mistakes in all of history, as 26 years later, when Shah Pahlavi's dictatorship proved too much for the Iranian people to bear, a popular revolt against the government took place and hostages at the US embassy were taken in retaliation for the US's support of the Pahlavi regime.

Make no mistake: There would never have been any problems with Iran if the CIA had not overthrown Muhammad Mossadegh.

There would have been no Ayatollah Khomeini. There would have been no Iranian Revolution against the Shah and the US. There would have been no hostages. Most importantly of all, there would be no scaremongering of the Iranian regime building nuclear weapons in order to attack Israel, an accusation for which today there is still absolutely no evidence whatsoever.

It all started somewhere. It started today, 60 years ago, on August 19th 1953. Never forget.

R.I.P. Muhammad Mossadegh, genuine leader of Iran.

If Jimmy Carter would have admitted that the CIA overthrew the

Iranian Prime Minister in 1953, and apologized for it. The hostages would have come home almost over night.

The sad thing this was only the beginning of tyrants running America. We have over thrown many governments since then, our great society was built on the blood of many peasants.

Thanks, sunny for bringing it back!

“The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time: the hand of force may destroy, but cannot disjoin them.”

– Thomas Jefferson

Great post - All Americans should know this.

But they don't and they wonder why Iran has a problem with us.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

What you don't know is that

What you don't know is that in 1941 the Anglo-Soviet involvement in Iran during WWII forced Reza Shah Pahlavi to abdicate power to his son Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi. In Iran Shah is King. In 1948 the UK and US restructured Iranian government to be more similar to the UK government whereby the King/Queen is just a figurehead and the Prime Minister has the power. This lead to Mosaddegh being elected in 1951 as the new powerful Prime Minister of Iran. Mosaddegh's close ties with the communistic Tudeh party led to the nationalization of the Iranian oil fields which then caused the UK and US to overthrow the Prime Minister and restructured the government yet again, returning the power of Iranian government back in the hands of the Shah.

Mohammmad Reza Shah Pahlavi was the Shah from 1941 to 1979. The only change between that time was if the Shah had the power as a typical monarch or if he only had a symbolic position such as the King/Queen of England.

I am in no way condoning the action of the US in the 1953 coup d'etat of Mosaddegh, however, it was only due to US/Uk involvement in 1948 which even allowed him to amass the power in the first place.

What ever happened...

To the sandy hook investigation? Any news? I know for a while the investigation was sealed. Has it been opened?

And allowing Mossadegh to be

And allowing Mossadegh to be taken down sealed the faith of the US and the western world vs. the Middle East. From there on in, we have been in perpetual wars everywhere in the greater "Arab" region, though Iran/Persia has nothing to do with Arabs. And it will never stop. It is unbelievable that the "windfall" is not recognised as being multiple reactions to policies initiated by amateurs and gone totally awry. And the irony of it all, the Nobel Peace Price winner keeps on pushing for even more wars, more mischievous actions under the guise of the "Arab Spring". Look at Egypt and see what that has led to, Libya - and it will get even worse!
The people that hate you intensely will attack you in one way or another, with picks if necessary. It is that primitive and it is that much hatred you have caused. Innocent lives has been lost in droves and in the deep sorrow maddening hatred grows freely, with the help of opportunistic "muslim brotherhood" and mullahs that have their own power agendas. It is just like the hatred that emerged in Poland against the Germans after WWII, and in Russia, in Norway, in Holland...
The US has tangled itself into a quagmire of misery. Get out, go home ann realise you are not the police of the world, your ideals are not for everyone to like and your way of life is like it or not actually quite offensive to a very large portion of the population of the world.

Muhammad Mossadegh

Freedom brings prosperity. And Evil Wants it. Everywhere

America seems rich, but has let the government turn to evil. I'm sure you know that.

Debt is not prosperity, and selling future generations into slavery is not wise. But I'm sure you know that as well.

Thank you for being here. America is a good idea that was taken over, and without the people knowing has caused a lot of pain.

Even a Liberty forum has people willing to inflict hatred.

60 years is long enough to make it known. We are all people, share this with your friends if they haven't seen it. I'm sure hatred exist there as well.

And I apologize for my friends here on DP that didn't respond earlier. I saw your post when it first went up, but wanted to wait to see how many here on a liberty forum would respond. You did get a lot of upvotes! Some good responses, and a good idea of how far America has to go, and what she's up against. ;)

"Before we can ever ask how things might go wrong; we must first explain how they could ever go right"

To make matters worse

Over the last thirty years every time the Iranian people have started to move their country’s government towards a more western style of reform……our leader have created another problem to keep them hostile towards us. The USG DOES NOT want peace in the Middle East……..we need to sell weapons to them.

CIA Confirms Role in 1953 Iran Coup

Marking the sixtieth anniversary of the overthrow of Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq, the National Security Archive is today posting recently declassified CIA documents on the United States' role in the controversial operation. American and British involvement in Mosaddeq's ouster has long been public knowledge, but today's posting includes what is believed to be the CIA's first formal acknowledgement that the agency helped to plan and execute the coup.

Never forget Iran Air 655.

...and 60 years on

the CIA is doing the same thing in multiple countries across the ME and North Africa...the USA has already been taken from the inside.

The CIA was "born" to kill on this day, 1953.

10 years later they killed a sitting US President.

50 years later we have finally exposed them.

Time marches on. We, the people will prevail.
