Is Rand Paul Going Neocon on Iran?

by David Shams | Huffington Post

- snip

What a difference a year makes.

Last Friday, I received an email from Rand Paul's office. He was, ostensibly, responding to my letter urging the Senate to oppose a new resolution that would call for the U.S. to enforce sanctions and provide economic, political, and military support if Israel attacked Iran. I opened it assuming that I'd read an email about how Senator Paul remained committed to standing strong against the push for war and sanctions. Boy was I wrong.

Ten months after sitting with what I assumed was a sympathetic ear, I read the following:

Iran continues to pose a threat to the region and the world as it continues nuclear development in the face of international sanctions and pressure to halt this aggressive behavior. Though a nuclear Iran would be a threat on the global scale, there is also concern that a nuclear Iran would aggressively target our ally Israel.

The United States and Israel have a special relationship. With our shared history and common values, the American and Israeli people have formed a bond that unifies us across many thousands of miles and calls on us to work together toward peace and prosperity. This peace is not only between our two nations, but also our neighbors.

In February 2013, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) introduced S.Res.65, a Senate resolution stating it is the sense of Congress that the United States and international organizations should continue the enforcement of sanctions against Iran. In addition, S.Res.65 reiterates the policy of the United States to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and our continued support of our ally Israel.

I supported S.Res.65, which passed both the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the full Senate unanimously.

He goes on to mention that he got language included in the resolution stating that it does not authorize war. But I admittedly had to re-read the letter a few times. Here was a letter from Sen. Rand Paul, a supposed anti-sanctions, anti-war isolationist, that was basically doing a complete 180 degree turn away from what Paul's been advocating since before his election.

What do you think is going to happen if Rand wins?

Rand 'lies' his way to the White House and then turns the table on the higher ups...

The slogan press on has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.

Who says he lies?

I imagine he's gonna carry out the same policies he says he will. He doesn't need to turn any tables to be a good president for me.

That appears to be the general consensus..

that these are just tactics to get into the White House and when he does - that's when the real change begins.

Yeah, right.

and if he's going to carry out the same policies that he speaks about, ie. the above post, then he does not represent me. Sanctions against Iran is not right and violates the non-aggression principle.

Yeah well

So does collecting taxes for defense spending and basic government. In the you always have to be a little pragmatic. Tbh I'm not well versed enough to be convinced either way about Iran. To me sanctions on them is not a very big issue.

Rand isn't going to win

Rand isn't going to run. Rand sees what the hell is going down and it's too bad so many here don't.

Enlighten Me

Enlighten us then? Whats going down?

He's running for a second term

Rand has signed papers saying he is running for a second term as Senator in Kentucky, which states that he can not run for two offices in the same election year.

GOP intends to get back on track to make the Democratic Party the RULING PARTY, under the UN AGENDA.. Know anything about Chinese politics? That's our new model. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics_of_China

Well if

you are right, than we are screwed. Their is no hope for America.

Then the only way to win is a real revolution.

There's got to be another way

I believe they want an Egypt or a Syria, and I for one, do not want to give them that. I still think Ron and Rand have it right about taking the GOP and making it constitutionally correct.. set an example. It's not about what the GOP is.. it's about what the GOP can be. There's no need to re-invent the wheel, just the need for people to learn how to operate it. The hard part is convicing people that it's ok to get dirty cleaning it up because the dirt can wash off.. GOP has reinvented itself many times.

So why are

people talking that Rand could be President. Why put him in polls if he is not running for President?

People like to talk about what they feel, and many people feel that they would really like Rand.

He does have a few options, but I think if McConnell loses, he won't run, because he's a Junior Senator, and McConnell's opposition (which many who like Rand ironically support), if McConnell loses, that will be TWO Jr Senators for Kentucky.. that's NOT good compared to states like CA, with 53 electoral votes, Feinstein who has been in for over 20 years and Boxer, nearly 20 years..

Rand would not abandon his state for president because it takes people in position in ALL 50 states, and right now, he doesn't have that.

Ron Paul supporters who joined the GOP are bailing... Rand won't bail, people like me won't bail.. but it makes it much harder when you don't have an educated (politically, people who know campaign laws, local and state political laws, when you don't have people in the leadership circles, those who are would undermind him), the way you've seen Obama undermined. Obama was a freshman Senator.. he did not have the people in the committees, Clinton passed the torch to Obama,, ran the nation as SOS merging us with the UN, Kerry is doing that now, which gives Clinton plenty of room to make her run stealth (reason GOP gave for boycott of CNN and MSNBC, but it's happening on other levels as well...

People who like Rand should be getting in the GOP and preparing to support him.. they are not. It's like what happened to Ron Paul.. Ron Paul had a HUGE fan club, but not enough committees seated to give him the nomination.
