Manning Wants To Do His Time As "Chelsea E. Manning."

We Get a Hero for Liberty and He's a Target for Scorn on a Personal Issue!

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) — Bradley Manning plans to live as a woman named Chelsea and wants to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible, the soldier said Thursday, a day after being sentenced to 35 years in prison for sending classified material to WikiLeaks.

Manning announced the decision in a written statement provided to NBC's "Today" show, asking supporters to refer to him by his new name and the feminine pronoun. The statement was signed "Chelsea E. Manning."

"As I transition into this next phase of my life, I want everyone to know the real me. I am Chelsea Manning. I am a female. Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible," the statement read.

Manning's defense attorney David Coombs told "Today" in an interview that he is hoping officials at the military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., will accommodate Manning's request for hormone therapy.

"If Fort Leavenworth does not, then I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure they are forced to do so," Coombs said.

Coombs did not respond to phone and email messages from The Associated Press on Thursday.

Manning's struggle with gender identity disorder — the sense of being a woman trapped in a man's body — was key to the defense.

Attorneys had presented evidence of Manning's struggle with gender identity, including a photo of the soldier in a blond wig and lipstick sent to a therapist.

Manning is a hero,

Manning is a hero, and her gender makes no difference whatsoever.

Manning is no more a her

than I am a circus monkey.

A talking circus monkey!

dare I ask?

are you?

I agree, but I worry...

I agree, my only concern is whether the federal government would recognize his new gender after a sex change. I mean...if you think he has been abused now, imagine how bad it would be in a men's prison as a woman...

Manning wants to do his time as "Chelsea E. Manning."

Personally, I am somewhat disgusted by what he's wanting to do. However, what disgusts me more are the abuses of "our" government and criminal activity that he/she, and people like Mr. Snowden have revealed to us.

How are you all not already aware of this?

From some of your comments, I can tell that this gender thing is breaking news to you, in which case, this shows that you haven't really looked into his case at all. It was public knowledge that Manning was at the very least cross-dressing and having issues with being gay in the Army. He had a mental breakdown because of it before he leaked those documents. Even if you don't think that played a part in his decision to leak half a million documents, the fact that you don't already know this information shows that many of you don't care about the facts of the case, or the truth. You were just looking for a hero and the media gave one to you.

Free market capitalism isn't right for America because it works better. It's right because it's free (and it works better).

the first thing I did was read the chat logs

and all of this is clear as day in the chat logs.

I don't personally know anyone else who actually sat down and read them. Yet these chat logs where all the govt had to go on when they caught him. The people I know all just believed what the news fed them sadly.

I think they've brainwashed

I think they've brainwashed him to a point he doesn't even know who he is. Say what you want, but this man spurred the new found age of whistleblowers and they need to make an example out of him. Lets just say i would die, and take out a few before letting them do what they did to manning, to me.

Even if he changes his name

Even if he changes his name and his gender, Bradley Manning will still be more of a man than the thugs he exposed!

Doesn't matter to me what s/he does, though the way the article is written makes it seem over the top to the point of seeming like a load of bull. Either way, I stand by my 'meh'.

Maybe some of the more 'left-leaning' types will be sympathetic towards Manning now, since a lot seem to automatically throw their support behind just about anyone who identifies with the LBGT community. It'd be great if people supported Manning because of his (her?) actions, but alas, this is America.

A signature used to be here!

He's a hero no matter what

If he really has been transgender all all his life, then he has always been in prison.

And if this is a recent development you have to consider we have no idea what they did to him thus far physically and what that did to him mentally.

And if it's fake, well how can you blame him. I'd rather not be a man in prison either

This smells of fakery...

The powers-that-be are on the ropes now and will continue grasping at straws to take the attention of the attention-deficit masses away from the REAL issues~! OK, Glen Greenwald is gay and therefore," all you church-going Republicans who want to blast this administration have been listening to a non-trustworthy homosexual!!" Now this Manning thing...I'm tellin' ya, this is all smoke-and-mirrors.

Silence isn't always golden....sometimes it's yellow.

FYI, this "story" began with a slime Hollywood reporter who would have NEVER had access to Bradley Manning EVER, since his sentencing. Only relatives could possibly have visited him.

The timing aspect of this whole thing is suspect...being RIGHT AFTER the sentencing? Right. First, why would he want to muddy the waters with such a thing? WHO do we know that would have motive for this? Indeed, the CIA and our complicit government.....to stop the talk about what good things were being said about Manning.

No, I choose not to believe such nonsense.

A tainted hero?

Like most on the DP, I applaud the whistle blowers as being heroes, not traitors. And I really don't care how Manning wants to live out the rest of his life, be it straight, gay, or somewhere in between. To each his own.

But unfortunately, to the un-informed masses, with aid from the mainstream media, this will be played out as just another indicator (although false) that the liberty movement is just a bunch of weird, sexed-up, grass smoking, anarchists, led by some cranky old b...tard.

Granted, Manning is doing nothing wrong in wanting to undergo hormone therapy. But most will find that a bit strange, not the norm, that this liberty movement hero is some sort of whack job. So whatever he has done or espoused to further liberty has become tainted.

That sucks, but I'm afraid that is what we are going to see happen in this case. This is not intended to be a put down of Manning on my part, but just trying to point something out that seems rather obvious to me. Hopefully, I may be wrong, but I just don't think so.

The way I see it is as a teaching moment.

You're right, some people probably read this or heard about it on the news and have already made up their minds, but some that don't have a genuine opportunity to learn about it if they don't already know what being transgender is. It's not common to begin with, let alone among famous folks. People learned about Chaz Bono only because the media wouldn't shut up about it. I doubt everyone knows that the Wachowski brothers behind the Matrix movies are no longer brothers, as Larry is now Lana. There's one of the Arquettes... short list, really. In some ways, I think many trans people, whether they know it or not, have something in common with the liberty movement in that they just want to be left alone. That's a pretty good diving board for discussion with other liberty-minded people on the matter.

wolfe's picture

He was psychologically abused.

He had personal issues to begin with, as we all do. He may have worked through them on his own. He may have decided on a different alternative lifestyle choice, or the same one. Who knows.

But then he was psychologically tortured and manipulated for 3 years. After that, all bets are off and his decisions after that abuse are all suspect. How much was his own desire versus what was implanted by the torture, or brought to a head because of the extreme mental stress.

Once again who knows.

The man is a hero. The woman might be cute... Just kidding folks.

The Philosophy Of Liberty -

That answer lies with when Bradley first knew he should've been

Born the other gender. Most transgender people put this before the age of ten.
I'm fairly sure it was talked about with the person who eventually turned Manning in (Lamo?).

And still has more balls than millions of other human beings

I got it...

But not for long.

"We Get a Hero for Liberty

"We Get a Hero for Liberty and He's a Target for Scorn on a Personal Issue!"

what do you mean? Bradl.. I mean Chelsea, is the one making it an issue.

Did he set-up the government for treatment?

No wonder he was so calm and centered during this whole trial.

He may have figured he could get free medical treatment to "be all he could be".
