Water Leaks May Become New Japan Nuclear Disaster

Japan's nuclear watchdog said a leak of highly radioactive water at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant could be the beginning of a new disaster - a series of leaks of contaminated water from storage tanks.

The plant operator has built hundreds of steel tanks to store massive amounts of radioactive water coming from three melted reactors, as well as underground water running into reactor and turbine basements.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. says about 300 tons (300,000 liters, 80,000 gallons) of contaminated water leaked from one of the tanks, possibly through a seam. The leak is the fifth, and the worst, since last year involving tanks of the same design at the wrecked Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, raising concerns that contaminated water could begin leaking from storage tanks one after another.

Can't we just get some remote controlled concrete trucks

and have them turn the entire site into a solid concrete mound? Could even get some remote vehicles to drag a pipe to the right spot and pump concrete down it until everything's covered sufficiently.

Alternately, would could run a loop of pipe to the site and back and extract the heat generated there back to something that can sink it. Even if you dumped the heat into the ocean, it would mean they didn't need to keep adding new water which ends up in the ocean.

Just like the BP oil spill, it seems like there are lots of options that aren't being considered.

Unfortunately no.

While I'm not an expert, they need to do two things.
1) remove all unused and used fuel cells
2) remove the material (melted fuel cells) that are on/under the ground

These are the two things they have to continuously pour water on to cool them.

If they are not cooled, they will cause a runaway meltdown/explosion.

They have no way to effectively cool things now and are just creating an ungodly/unmanagable amount of radioactive water.

Another huge problem they are creating by pouring seawater on everything is that they're saturating the ground around the foundations and contaminating the local water table. Unless the buildings are built on bedrock, they will eventually be sitting in a man-made quicksand/swamp causing them to sink and likely fall over.

What I was saying is that we could use robotics to whatever needed to be done. This means they could pretty much do anything they wanted given enough money.

To do the cooling you suggest, they could make a pipe system where large quantities of cold water could be pumped to coils near where the heat is being generated. The return of this now hot water (or even ammonia or CO2 - they're great super cold refrigerants) could then be re-cooled with the waste heat being used for something productive. Or the waste could be just dumped into the ocean. The concrete was mostly to get a thermal conduit between the chilling loop and the heating rods (cells??).

With enough chilling (a similar process to freezing the land for digging tunnels in unstable ground), they could even turn the entire site into a giant frost mound. This may sound gargantuan but you'd be surprised how many times it's been done already.

Agreed that they're creating a major mess by saturating the ground! That'll never help the overall situation.

By "unused" in your #1, are you referring to storage or remaining rods in operation?

What do you mean by 'fuel cells'. I thought this plant used long bare rods dropped into a matrix or something similar.

And yes to the stored or formerly in use rods. They have rods that are still intact, and ones that have melted.

Short term, freezing things could work, but they need to be extracted before the whole thing can be encased in concrete.

I agree with you though, it's time to think of something different because what they're doing now will eventually backfire (far worse than it already is).

Oddly sad how pouring seawater on this toxic waste to keep it cool, and the runoff spreads the toxicity around is analogous to printing money with no regard to what will happen to the excess money.
