The Telegraph: EU plans to fit all cars with speed limiters

All cars could be fitted with devices that stop them going over 70mph, under new EU road safety measures which aim to cut deaths from road accidents by a third.

By Claire Carter8:49AM BST 01 Sep 2013

Under the proposals new cars would be fitted with cameras that could read road speed limit signs and automatically apply the brakes when this is exceeded.

Patrick McLoughlin, the Transport Secretary, is said to be opposed to the plans, which could also mean existing cars are sent to garages to be fitted with the speed limiters, preventing them from going over 70mph.

The new measures have been announced by the European Commission’s Mobility and Transport Department as a measure to reduce the 30,000 people who die on the roads in Europe every year.

A Government source told the Mail on Sunday Mr McLoughlin had instructed officials to block the move because they ‘violated’ motorists’ freedom. They said: “This has Big Brother written all over it and is exactly the sort of thing that gets people's backs up about Brussels.

Speed limiters are as old as the automobile

Heh. Speed limiters are as old as the automobile. And only now they are demanding them?

I recall a tale of how, back in 1900, a British city proposed an ordinance that all cars have a limiter so they could travel no faster than 5 miles per hour, so protect pedestrians.

However, before the limiters were to be installed, town councilmen had bought autos and thrilled in the exhiliaration of traveling ten miles per hour, and therefore refused to ratify their own ordinance!

Just saw this. So much for Euro sports cars lol

BTW,

"You are right !!! The Euro currency did double and tripple prices in Eurozone member states . In Italy for an example A house costing Lira300,000 ,(£100,000) the price simply became €300,000 . The overall cost of living rose 30% the first year and to 100% by the end of the second year .
The EU needs to be disbanded , every member state strip away all the legislation to before they joined and think again whether to readopt any EU laws .
Were it not for a free trade area , so many countries would not have joined .
The politics and over regulation in the EU towards becoming a single federal state is the EU's undoing."

True about Euro pricess! I was there when it happened

True about Euro pricess! I was there when it happened, on vacation in 2000 when the German Mark was switched over to Euro. Till then, there were two prices in most countries, including Germany. It was just about 2 Mark to 1 Euro, very easy calculation. But I tell you what: On New Year Day, the dual signs came down, and the Mark prices were left up, just with a Euro sign in front of it. Everything doubled in cost overnight!

Immediately there were complaints. The Land governments promised invesigations. There were a couple of highly publicised prosecutions of small shops for price rigging. But the big chain stores like Karstadt were not touched. And soon, everyone accepted paying double, especially when economists claimed the increase in the Euro's value against the world currencies and increased trade in the Eurozone would make Germans richer and "take away the pain".

The Euro promptly tanked, causing more outrage. But its since risen above the dollar and done relatively well thanks to the difficulty of manipulting it compated to other currencies.
