American Exceptionalism: Putin, the Neocons, and Ron Paul

Friday September 13, 2013

When Russian President Vladimir Putin took his American counterpart to task in a recent New York Times Editorial over Obama's invocation of the standard neoconservative boilerplate "American exceptionalism" to justify an aggressive US foreign policy, US neocons shrieked in unison. How dare he, they cried.

But to the neoconservatives, American exceptionalism has nothing to do with civil liberties, personal freedom, limited government, free markets, and the like. It is only the exeptionalism of the US sword, going abroad to seek monsters to destroy. It is only the exeptionalism of military might to force the world to follow US dictates.

Putin pushed back against this kind of false and ahistoric American exceptionalism and, likely because his argument made so much sense to the average American who is sick of war and aggression overseas, the neoconservatives suffered fits of convulsions and intestinal distress. Neoconserative Senator Robert Menendez, who has long dreamed of another Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, felt like he "wanted to vomit" after reading Putin's words. House Speaker John Boehner felt "insulted" by Putin. John McCain felt his intelligence insulted by Putin's comments.

What did Putin say that caused Washington such fits? He reminded the US, founded as it was generally on Christian principles, that the Creator did not make exceptional nations, but rather created all men in His own image:

I would rather disagree with a case he made on American exceptionalism, stating that the United States’ policy is “what makes America different. It’s what makes us exceptional.” It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation. There are big countries and small countries, rich and poor, those with long democratic traditions and those still finding their way to democracy. Their policies differ, too. We are all different, but when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal.

Not long ago, Ron Paul was asked to explain his view of American exeptionalism. Why did he seem to disagree with the neoconservatives who would invoke this term as the bloody shirt was once waved in the days of old? Here is Ron Paul's view of the real American exceptionalism, rooted in a patriotism that seeks not to force our way of life on others at the barrel of a gun, but rather to do our best, acknowledge and work on our shortcomings, and endeavor to set an example of the kind of peace and prosperity that can be achieved in a free society that respects individual liberty:

to take it to the MIC.

Dr Paul and Putin are Wrong, America is Exceptional!

I listened to Lush Gymball the other day using the typical rightwing establishment 'water-carrying' argument, that America was exceptional before Obama and the Left gained power. I really can't stand listening to him, but I tune in sometimes to listen to what the new charade propaganda he's playing. Anyhow, here's an excellent example of the empirical facts that we aren't exceptional in the least. http://tomatobubble.com/id329.html
I encourage people to also check out the new book from the site, 'The Bad War' The Real Story of WWII. It really go along with the book by Pat Buchanan 'The Unnecessary War', but it contains much more indepth documented detail. There is a small summary on the left side collumn of the site.

Welcome contrast

To Rand's response to Putin...

I hear McCain was writing one to, that ought to be good for a
groan or two.

Psychologically elevating

Psychologically elevating yourselves through mass brainwashing is the highest and most dangerous form of Narcissism.

Just a damn nice post!

Politics is so full of hate and guilt today. ie. who sides with one gang or another.

Makes me Puke.

I believe MOST PEOPLE are good, but something is keeping us from being successful.

America was MOST PROSPEROUS and most peaceful, when we enjoyed and protected our independence as individuals.

from an immigrant

I moved and immigrated to this country when I was 17 years old. I see American exceptionalism rooted in it exceptionally well written Constitution. American people are no more different than any others. The unique constitution is what guarantees the success of any individual in this land that is willing to work hard to pursue his/her own dream. Without it, we will live and suffer just like everyone else. Unfortunately, most American growing up here don't understand the importance of its Constitution, Bill of Rights.

Thank you.

" The unique constitution is what guarantees the success of any individual in this land that is willing to work hard to pursue his/her own dream."

But, when people divide themselves thinking they are getting a Leg Up on their neighbors, or other countries, using GOVERNMENT to do so on their behalf the original idea is totally lost.

Why do people that migrate here get it more than the people that should have defended it with all their efforts?

There are always going to be

There are always going to be a small portion of individuals that will be able to think for themselves no matter where they are. Those are the same type heroic been written by Ayn Rand in her works. No matter how much the system tries to suppress and educate them, they will never take an answer without questioning. We have them in American, and America attracts them to come here over last 200 years.

Yet, there are also plenty people that migrated here and don't understand why?! They are here because everyone says that American is great and a place you can get rich and good life. But, why and how is it you can achieve something great here, but can't at your own homeland?! Many of them don't ask and will never know why. They will simply take the answer whatever been told. Their mind choose the lazy road.

However, higher percentage of immigrates get it is because they have experienced more harsh realities than any American. Their experience help them to identify lies. They had to learn common sense for survival. As John Galt implied, common sense and morality has to be relearned, in primitive way.

update

FYI (for those who maybe interested, for whatever reason?) lol .D

Headline edited from "Daniel McAdams, Exec. Director of Ron Paul Inst., on American Exceptionalism: Putin, The Neocons, and Ron Paul - Sept. 13, 2013" to the current one: "Ron Paul on "American Exceptionalism" & Daniel McAdams, Director of RPI, on Am.Ex, Putin, Neocons, and Ron Paul - Sept. 13, 2013"

not to step into intra-familial Thanksgiving dinner topic, but while I 'get' Rand's recent rebuttal to Putin on "American Exceptionalism" is basically saying the same thing, ie. one is not automatically exceptional by virtue of one's uncontrollable place of birth, but what one DOES that matter, Rand's saying that BECAUSE we have had a historically factual heritage of living by such Constitutional principles (at least the few that have, throughout the yrs, post-Founders' days) is the reason WHY we were 'exceptional.'

Ron's saying, simply: NO ONE is "exceptional" by virtue of birth, PERIOD. It's what you do that ONLY matters.

Ron's is a no-BS, blunt, genteel moral equivalent of...well, okay, so he'd NEVER put it this way, but if I had my druthers, I would say:

"Biitch, you ain't special, just because you delusionally keep telling yourself you are! DO something exceptional, THEN, you MAYBE considered "exceptional." But regardless, talk about an arrogant, childish, narcissistic, neurotic way of looking at yourself! Friggin' spoiled Boomer Brat!"

Rand's rebuttal on Putin's criticism, has a better rhetoric that appeals to a broader spectrum of political stripes, including the sheeple drones; he enlightens, without 'insulting' their petty, self-absorbed insecure egos.

LOL

Oh well, same thing, different rhetoric.

But for me, personally? Ron. It's ALWAYS gonna be Ron.D

Regardless, I'd sooooooooo pay to hear him say, "Biitch, you ain't special!" LOL. Sure, not likely to happen, ever. But, what the heck, eh?

Wonder if he ever uses expletives, when IF he gets mad... silly irrelevant trivia, but regardless, was always curious about that...

lol. well, you know a lot of men in the Doc's age range, even in the current, utterly PC-brainwashed can get away with saying ALMOST anything, yet the Good Doc, he's too classy...

I've known several in my grandpa's generation age range, whom, KNOWINGLY say the most obnoxious stuff to waitresses to get a rise out of them; they figure:

1. they're too old for the girls to slap them, physically,
2. they don't say things to the point of 'legal'-harassment, nor get physical,
3. so the worst response they'd get is a "no"
4. and, anything above "no," even if miles away from a "yes," makes them feel alive.

LOL

who could argue with that?

They crack me up. But sharp mofos; those who know to say just enough to get away with it? Yup: ladies, look out! Especially if they're septuagenarians or octogenarians! xD

As always, the Good Doctor puts everything in the proper

perspective. Excellent article by Daniel McAdams too.
