Biotech Industry Slips pro-GMO Propaganda Into Children's School Textbooks

'The biotech industry is now directly targeting America's schoolchildren with their propaganda. In the past, Monsanto and other GMO giants tried to indoctrinate elementary-aged youths with a biotechnology-themed coloring book; this time though, the industry's shameless promotions have come in an 8th grade textbook printed by the Evan-Moor Corporation.

On page 20, the textbook contains a writing exercise entitled "The Pros and Cons of Genetically Modified Foods," which makes claims like GM plants being more pest resistant and reducing pesticide application while ironically failing to mention ANY possible cons.'

I ain't no homophone,

I like both phones and gay people. I'm very PC, thank you.

I love GMOs. I'll eat 'em for

I love GMOs. I'll eat 'em for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Yum, yum!

Wow I was never good at

Wow I was never good at spelling but I spotted more errors in this statement then my 4 year old niece would make! I'm glad I've decided to home school

uhm, the errors were put in the sentences so that students could find the spelling errors!

"Genetically modified foods have the potential two solve many of the world's hunger and environmental problems."

That is but one example.

There is more than just the intent that proves America really is dumbed-down.

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

hey dum dum

the assignment is to correct the spelling and grammar, get a clue

Wow. Just wow.

Speaking of clueless?

The assignment has nothing to do with grammar, and involves spelling only as it affects the misuse of homophones. Nothing is misspelled.

The third part of the assignment is to answer the question: "How do the explanations strengthen the paragraph?" Which means students must study the content of the paragraph and come up with reasons why the argument is a good one. Translation: the assignment internalize this propaganda.

And you cap off your little performance by addressing the poster as "dum dum."

Just wow.

Completely legitimate story & offending textbook has been fixed after there was a big outcry from public about this. Partial victory by awake population.

Direct message posted yesterday by CEO of the textbook company.

A message from the CEO of Evan-Moor:

It has been brought to my attention that one of the activities in our Daily Six Traits Writing books contains a biased article about GMO foods. After reading the article, I must agree completely. I want to thank the parents and educators who brought this to my attention.

It was an error in our authoring and editing processes. The article was intended to present both sides of the issue and did not. Normally this would have been caught by our fact checking processes. Please accept my apology for the error.

I have directed our editorial staff to replace the article when the book is reprinted and to make the new article available on-line free of charge. Those of you who have e-mailed us will receive personal notification when the article is available. We will also post the availability on FaceBook.

On a personal note, my wife and I have contributed to a number of organizations that are campaigning for labeling of GMO foods: Organic Consumers Association, Food Democracy Now and Yes on 522 in Washington State. We do not allow GMO foods in our home, and we would certainly never do anything to promote them in our publications.

I have a really hard time

I have a really hard time believing this is a legitimate paper passed out at schools. The spelling is atrocious. While I have personally experienced schools passing out papers with inaccuracies and misspellings, I have never seen anything to this degree.

That being said, GMOs are really, really bad for you. But please, in trying to spread the word about GMO's and/or the programming aspects of public schools, let's use something more legitimate.

See comment below about homophones

Another kicker is as well...

that taxpayers are on the hook for the books.

When I was in the business program way back when, the college textbooks used fictional companies ie. XYZ Company

About 7 years ago I saw an accounting text from university and all the companies I saw in the case studies were non-fictional lol

I Call BS!!!

There's no way this is textbook material!

I counted nine (9) misspelled words on this one page without even looking hard!

Come on guys I guess it really is true that some people really do believe anything they read on the internet!!!

Here is a line they left out

There is no need for pesticides because the FDA says GMO's are not food, they are pesticides!

What documentation can you

What documentation can you provide as to the number of school districts using this textbook, and what number of books have been sold and at what cost to taxpayers. It's one thing to have a book or a magazine but it's another to actually have the business. If you have it could you put it up?

Be Your Own Media!!!

They forgot the BT toxin blessing from GMO corn found in humans!

Thank you Monsanto for giving every human on earth this free blessing of BT toxins found in 96% of women tested. Even the new born babies had the toxin in their blood.

Now we no longer need to eat the GMO food to get our fix, our guts will continue manufacturing the toxin for life. We will continue to give this blessing to our children as a birth right, aren't the lucky!

I think we are all becoming brain dead from eating this crap!

Surviving the killing fields of Minnesota

Hard to believe so many spelling errors

If this is real, it would be mind boggling.

It says, "fix the incorrect Homophones"

Homophones are words that sound like other words but are spelled differently. The errors are a part of this "test" apparently.

Kids will be more concerned/distracted with the Homophones than what it says regarding the GMOs and "planting seeds" of disinformation in their minds.

"We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience"—Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

The excercise has three parts

the second being to "Write sentences that explain the details on the lines provided." In effect, the instruction is for the child to regurgitate the propaganda back onto the paper in their own words, which therefore implants thoughts into the child's mind.

The last part instructs the child to answer the question at the end of the page which askes how the regurgitated propaganda strengthens the overall propaganda. More thoughts implanted here.

"Oh and also fix those homophones while you're at it kiddo. We at Monsanto quite frequently misuse ambiguous aurally-interpreted linguistics in our propaganda!"

I think the message is supposed to be subliminal.

It's been phonetically modified to resist critical thinking!

Should have been in there somewhere, I would think.
