Facebook users are quitting the social network in droves due to privacy concerns and fear of internet addiction, according to new research.

Increasing numbers are taking part in what's been dubbed 'virtual identity suicide' and deleting their accounts.

Analysis of more than 600 people, by researchers from the University of Vienna, found that data protection issues and social pressure to add friends were also among the reasons for leaving.

Others quoted shallow conversations, general dissatisfaction and loss of interest in the site.

Uh...

What took them so long?

Been "clean" from FB for over a year now.

And doing just fine. You can do it too! You're not alone ;)

Better late than never, I suppose....

Good for them.

What would the Founders do?

Instructions on how to delete the account?

I rarely log on, and would like to get rid of it altogether. How do I remove it? Thanks for any input.

Poor customer service on FB

They don't give you the option to cancel account when you access your account info. on Facebook (at least, I couldn't find it and neither could you). I had to google "how to cancel Facebook account" in order to delete mine this morning.

One more thing to know about deleting your facebook account

Facebook will interpret *any* attempt to log in within 2 weeks of requesting deletion as an indication that you changed your mind. So make sure you don't have any apps (games, etc.) that automatically log in to your account.

Thanks, Dog!

Piece of cake!

Hopefully, I won't lose my favorite addiction....

Words with Friends! I downloaded that through GooglePlay.

Didn't even consider that! Thanks!

I never installed any FB apps exactly for that reason.

Thanks for the heads-up for other users!

I never joined it. I have always thought I must be one of the few.

I'm still waiting for their stocks to plummet

I kind of don't understand how social networking sites like facebook, are able to be publicly traded when they don't produce anything. Twitter has announced that it's going public too. I don't think they can last very long. Then again, I'm no investment expert on the stock market, so what do I know? I'd rather have my physical assets anyways.

I'm not sure if this comment has a question in it or not, but feel free to reply and tell me how ignorant I am :) I'm down to learn, lol.

I think you're right.

MySpace was the big thing before Facebook, right? It's too easy to dump Facebook not just by deleting an account, but to simply stop using it. Someday, very suddenly, it'll be called "lame" and that'll be it.

LOL I think Facebook will be in really big trouble if something else comes along that won't share personal information with the government and doesn't claim "rights" to the content that people add.

People are weird, and Facebook has nothing that people really need. It's a good thing it's free.

same reason people will work hard for a US note...... it is because OTHERS think it is worth something.

Like Cigarettes

I quit cold turkey for about 6 months this year, deactivated my account. I turned it back on but I don't post anymore. I still tweet, but if they're monitoring all we do/say anyway then I was red flagged a long time ago. So now I just keep FB for pictures, no more posts about where I am, what I'm doing. I used to post liberty stuff too, but I decided its not worth having a go to resource for some spook to know everything I say do. On twitter I usually just post anti gov articles and the like, @ this point I don't care if some spook is reading them. Maybe they'll wake up & stop being a government creep.

WOW

That is quite a few people.

What are they going to do at facebook? I guess layoffs are looming.

Diamond Dog's picture

WOW!

That's the spirit!

I for one, even though I'm only a dog, have noticed the incredible amount of advertising on FB recently, which causes me to question.

What is up? I mean seriously! What the f - is up with all that spam?

People actually endure that? They push it right in your face. You can't even tell what the hell it is. They make it look like a post from one of your "friends."
