Dean Young is the clear choice, because of these positions he has taken:

+Cut inflation by returning to sound money principles, and auditing the Federal Reserve.

+Believes that we should abolish the IRS.

+Stop using taxpayer money to bailout private companies.

+Believes that we should stop the NSA snooping on US Citizens.

+Will fight tirelessly to repeal & defund Obamacare

+Will work to keep the internet free and unregulated.

+Will work to rein in out-of-control regulations and government departments.

+Stop giving taxpayer’s money to countries that hate us.

+Support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.

+Stand strong for the 2nd Amendment, and our right to Keep and Bear Arms.

+Uphold States’ Rights that are guaranteed in the 10th Amendment.

I'm disappointed, but not surprised.

Dean Young was on the radio this morning, so I took the opportunity to fire two of my "litmus test" questions at him. Typical of the "conservative values" candidates in this area, he has wrapped himself in the Constitution, but rarely with any specifics.
My first question was if he would support the impeachment of John Roberts (Roberts has dictated a tax upon the people, which is a usurpation of Congress). Dean stated impeachment was a "big deal", and from there just started repeating campaign platitudes that I can't remember, dodging the question.
Second, I asked him if he would support repeal of the 16th and 17th Amendments. He had to scratch around and ask if the 16th was the one instituting the income tax, and didn't seem to even know what the 17th was. Again, he failed to answer the question, and went into a speech about how just sending good, moral people to Congress is really all we need to turn our country around.
Another of my litmus test questions is about Public/Private Partnerships. Typically, "conservative values" candidates in this area, most who have migrated towards the T-Party, think PPP is a good thing, and never seem to consider it's unconstitutionality. I didn't get to ask him that question, but from the sound of his comments, I doubt he has given it much thought. Lord only knows how he will handle the pressure to "bring home the bacon".
Dean Young is not a liberty candidate; not in the pure sense. It will be interesting to dig further, and find out his views on issues such as federally funded roadblocks, the Patriot Act and other offensive legislation, and his views on war.
I will still support him over the establishment candidate, Bradley Byrne, because he may be educable, but don't get too excited about having a liberty candidate from Alabama's 1st Congressional District.

anti same sex marriage pledge?

I'm not in Alabama but took a quick look at Young. One prominent position seems to be his strong anti-gay stance, including a 'pledge' he started during the campaign.

The bullet points in the OP sound good, and I don't have much interest, generally, in LGBT issues, but Young seems to be skipping the 'get government out of the marriage biz' position and seems to have almost an anti-gay vendetta of Santorum-like proportions. That makes me nervous.

I don't know much about Byrne, or how the two stack up against each other overall. I'm not trying to slam Young at all, just curious - is he an uber-moral guy like Santorum or is that one position just an anomaly that's been blown up by the press?

Example of press coverage:

You're gonna go after him over one issue?

Please. You also seem to forget where he's running. This could be a huge issue in the district and rocking that boat may make him not float.
It'll be a loooong time before we can get the gov outta the marriage busiess - it's tied to the IRS.
Though, presonally, I'm fine with that stance. I don't want to see traditional marriage perverted. I hate when SCOTUS messes with a meaning in the Constitution and I hate it when the progressives mess with the meaning of marriage. Let 'em have civil unions if they want. It's mostly about the legalities anyway. If you truly love someone and plan on spending the rest of your life with him/her, you don't need a piece of paper to prove it.

Dean Young made it to the runoff!!
Thanks so much Stonewall... Hats off 2U
you have assumed a very important watchdog role here on the DP.
I acknowledge what you do here...
may it grow and BLOSSOM in the coming days.

Thanks for covering this Stonewall.

I feel awful as this is my district and I have been unable to get involved up to this point. I'm relieved Young made it into the run-off. My situation frees me up next week, so I will be volunteering to help Young in any way I can. The run-off is Nov 5.
His opponent, Bradley Byrne, is a polished attorney, and is well known for cleaning up corruption within the two college system as chancellor. He presents a good Constitutional line, but hedges when presented with gut check issues such as Public Private Partnerships. He seems to lack a grasp of our true dire liberty straights. He thinks Snowden is a traitor, and supports reshuffling the Titanic chairs via a "flat tax". My sense is he will quickly become an establishment player, making sure he gets our "fair share" from DC in order to keep his big business constituents happy. He is formidable, so I will be doing all I can to get Young in office.
Thanks again!

Undo what Wilson did

That's great!

volunteering is the most important thing, he did far better than expected, so with a little cash, and a lot of ground work I bet he can win.

Here is what a recent poll had suggested:
Byrne 34%, Chad Fincher, 14.9 percent, Dean Young 12.1 percent, Quin Hillyer 9.1 percent, and Wells Griffith at 8.3 percent, 17 percent undecided.

It has been called. Young

It has been called. Young goes to RunOff.

It's time! Rand Paul 2016!

"Truth, Justice, and the American Way!"

ROTFL look at this update!

"Quin Hillyer endorsing Bradley Byrne and headed to Ed's Seafood Shed."

I think its funny, don't know why :)

"Alas! I believe in the virtue of birds. And it only takes a feather for me to die laughing."

Thanks for the updates -

Thanks for the updates - especially if it looks good. It would be great news to hear a liberty candidate made it.

He made it to the Runoff!

He goes on to the Runoff on November 5th! he got over TWICE the percentage the poll had said!

It's time we stuck together.

I have no dog in this fight but hate to see us vilifying people or groups who espouse our beliefs more than the Liberal mass media agenda.

I hear what you're saying...

But I STRONGLY recommend that you start to listen to something else as well. Read online too. You're here, so that's good. :)

Why dont we know about this stuff until the Day of

Come on Alabama Paulites. Elections are the most important thing we can participate in and it should have already been on the front page. I come to this site nearly everyday and have never heard of either of these candidates nor a special election.

I don't know, I post this

I don't know, I post this kind of stuff about candidates all the time, and it never seems to get any traction unless I give it an outlandish headline.

I go to http://www.thegreenpapers.com/ they post links to all the candidates in most big elections, and I poke around on all the candidate sites, trying to see if they are liberty, I wish others would as well.

Come on liberty - let us know

Come on liberty - let us know how it is going and the results.

Turnout is low!

according to his facebook page:

"The turnout is LOW, the election is CLOSE. YOU can still make a difference in whether Dean Young and his constitutional values win a seat in the runoff. Please contact all who would vote for Dean Young and urge them to get to the polls before the 7 p.m. close. Anyone actually in line at 7 can vote, but those walking up after 7 cannot."

Alabama: polls open until 7pm.

Changed the spelling to

Changed the spelling to Kristol, sorry about that, I like Bill Crystal from Monsters Inc ;)

Who's Mark Levin and Bill

Who's Mark Levin and Bill Crystal? I know who Rick Santorum and AIPAC are.

Anyway, hope Mr. Young wins.

LOL you must be young

Bill Kristol is the son of the original Trotskyist and neocon, Irving Kristol. Below is Justin Raimondo's RIP piece

Mark Levin, Hannity calls him 'The Great One! HAHAHA Radio host who hates Ron Paul. Wants the states to have a Constitutional convention. A post about it was offered here at the DP a few weeks ago. 'nuff said about that idiot.

If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.
James Madison

No, not young.

I know who Bill and Irving Kristol are. I didn't realize that was the "Bill Crystal" the OP was referring to.

Mark Levin? I guess I don't listen to MSM enough. Does he really have a following? I know O'Reilly, Rush, Chris Matthews.

Levin seems to be a reluctant Rand Paul supporter

He claims to represent the Tea Party and always likes to push Ted Cruz in front of Rand when he has the chance. He does (seemingly) reluctantly support Rand though. I tend to think he is just trying to co-opt Rand/Ron's/The Tea party's following down a neocon path.
