Citing Trolls, 'Popular Science' Website Shuts Down Comments

The online content director for PopularScience.com announced Tuesday that the website will no longer accept comments on new articles, saying a small but vocal minority of "shrill, boorish specimens of the lower Internet phyla" were ruining it for everyone else.

We're all familiar with that deep, dark rabbit hole of Internet comment boards. A negative or critical comment sparks a firestorm of debate until the discussion erodes into a cavalcade of insults and personal attacks. Once you finally snap back to reality, you realize you've often strayed so far from the original story that it's often difficult to find your way back.

This distracting nature of online comments is part of the reason Popular Science, the venerable 141-year-old science and technology publication, declared that it would be shutting its comment boards down.

What do you think guys? Should we shut down comments here too?

At least they do admit it’s doctrine.

Doctrine is not science.

Why not just change the name of their rag to “Popular Doctrine” and then no one will feel the need to dispute them with facts.

It’s their rag, they can do what they want. Though of course they are dooming themselves the way all statist media outlets do. You just don’t need that many propaganda outlets. There’s no market for it.

And people come on, Michael is kidding.

I know you can't be serious, Michael.

The comments here are the only interest on the site. We can find articles anywhere. We come here for discussion.

It is not the comments that I am concerned with on the DP.

It is the editorial decisions.

God Bless.

Me too

One of which being, letting you back and allowing pontificating headlines like THIS IS WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN.

You are right. I have rectified the situation.

God bless.

That was you?

Not surprised, but a litte disappointed.

God Bless.

Wasn't it Popular Science

Wasn't it Popular Science that debunked 911. After all they are the authority, so we can not have anyone question their analysis. I guess RP's statement "Don't steal the govt. doesn't like competition" can be applied to many things.

Popular Science (and Mechanics) just like so many other entities that claim to be free and independent are mouthpieces of the PTSB.

Time to INVESTIGATE the investigators of 9/11. PROSECUTE the prosecutors. EXPOSE the cover-up.

I know - another one is

I know - another one is public radio or PBS. I used to think how great to have shows funded by the public for the public. Then I became "enlightened" to find out we get to fund our own propaganda. Of course nothing new, since the Federal Government takes money from us to market their agendas. Now that I can "see" a little better it is really troublesome to watch, listen or read. I feel like I am living in a constant advertisement for the PTSB.

Comments is what makes this community, but

Comments is what makes this community, but there is no doubt that there is a lot of trolls here. I made a comment earlier today about monitoring troll behavior, possibly a website, not sure about that. I'm at the point where I don't care if I say something unpopular to someone being condescending for no good reason. The Daily Paul is a huge influence in my opinion of reuniting many passionate liberty minds, but if you look at some of the comments and look at their profiles, how sad it is that these individuals are trying to divide and slow the liberty momentum in my opinion. Maybe it's time to create fun opportunities to expose the hypocrisy, maybe not?

Here is the link from earlier today.
I will say my first comment was a bit strong about monitoring, was just trying to startle the trolls.

kind people rock

Shouldn't your name be "come as you is"?

Sorry, had to do it!

They are still trying to be old media,

controlling the debate. Science is not orthodoxy, it is method. It makes philosophical presuppositions that are outside of its own scope of verifiable truth.

The internet is putting access back into the hands of people, so now Pop-Sci can be questioned by people who can link peer-reviewed papers citing contrary opinions, different (sometimes more accurate data, as with "climate change").

This is elitism at its finest, and I for one am glad that they are being overt about it, because the elitism is really starting to piss people off, and it's about damned time.
