HURRAY! 'Liberals' Rejoice! USAF recycles! Aging F-16's turned into UnManned Drones - Sep. 26, 2013

Guardian UK: Boeing F16 drone given unmanned test flight by US air force - video

The US air force and Boeing test an unmanned flight of a retired F-16 fighter plane. Two test pilots at a ground-control station at Tyndall air base in Florida remotely fly a modified F-16 (QF-16) conducting a series of simulated manoeuvres, reaching supersonic speeds, then returning to base and landing, all without a pilot in the cockpit. The US Air Force has test flown an F-16 fighter jet without a pilot on board for the first time, in the latest sign of the military's increasing reliance on drones.

The robotic F-16 flew for 55 minutes with an empty cockpit from a base in Florida last week, as part of a program that will see the converted fighter jet used as a target for pilots in training, manufacturer Boeing said.

"It was really amazing to see an F-16 take off with nobody in it," said Michelle Shelhamer from Boeing, which has adapted the plane for the US military.

The aircraft is one of six "retired" F-16 jets that will be used as aerial targets for fighter pilots training for air-to-air combat, she said.

I wonder how much it cost

I wonder how much it cost start to finish to engineer and I guess you'd say "retrofit" it for this. Then compare it to say, the predator or the RQ-170. Seems to make much more sense to do it Thurs way since you don't have to worry about highly classified brand spanking new equipment getting "lost" behind the lines of "certain" countries.

Homeland security statement: patriotism is now considered terrorism.
I love www.isidewith.com shared it with everyone I know. If anything they realize its not just a red and blue idiot running for reelection.

I think

If one of these ever crashes into a residential area...the program will be seriously reconsidered imo.

donvino

This is nothing new...

F-4 Phantoms were converted to drones (QF-4) over 30 years ago. Don't get too excited over this little article.

wholly propagandistic, but if you grew up in the 1980's?

nuff said?

Exactly My Thoughts!

Lets face it, because the buildings were rigged with explosives, does anyone really believe that "IF" some so called terrorists were flying those planes, then the PTB would be hoping and praying that they would hit their target....the WTC buildings?

Ha, what a joke that is!

Of course they were being flown by remote.

Notice how the second plane banked hard left just before impact?

At least they are big enough to target!

With out the nagging conscience that would be involved if they were manned, it actually makes using them for target practice more fun! (only a hint of sarcasm is intended here, so will not use purple :)

I know! Right?

think those Colorado hunters seeking tags would be double whopper happy?

xD

though, if you think about it, this is where the Ruskies were much more capitalistic (well, okay, so America was never really fully capitalist, since Hamilton, but you get the gist, for the sake of conversation), after the Fall of USSR: they sold off their MiGs to private Americans and other Western buyers, provided ya got the dough, and of course, they disarmed them .o/

LOL

Frankly, that MiG is FAR more advanced than that throw-away target practice F-16's and the Ruskies are selling it to us Americans.

WTF is USAF's major malfunction??

SELL it BACK to your employers, ya mooks!

Why waste 'money' refitting with new R/C avionics and flight controls/servos?

Or, seeing as how it's ALREADY been paid for, BY us: raffle them off for free!

LOLOL!
