Now I KNOW Something Good Is Happening In America - Team Calls It Quits After Football Death

BROCTON, N.Y. (AP) — It was a question with no right answer that tugged heavy at the hearts of Damon Janes' teammates when the 16-year-old died after a hit in a high school football game: Should the season go on?

Should the players rally and play every game for their star running back, whose motto was "Giving up is simply not an option"? Or should the teenagers forget about football and take time to mourn their friend?

The Westfield-Brocton Wolverines' varsity players took a paper-ballot vote and decided that the pain was too great, that their season would end after just two games.

"I wanted to play, I love the game," said teammate Stevie Wisecarver III, a 16-year-old quarterback who has played football since third grade. "But it just wouldn't feel right without him. The team just didn't feel right."

Added 17-year-old senior cornerback Joey Villafrank: "It feels like there's more to life. Before, football used to be life for me; it was the only sport I played. But now I realize that there's more than just playing the game."

Jetguy

I think your question is honest. The fact that it has 5 upvotes here makes me wonder.

Are you and your 'upvotes' real?

Your handle suggest you are flying Jets to defend america.

You are being paid by stolen dollars from Americans for your existance.

I'll USE YOUR HEADLINE hoping you will wake up.

"Something Bad Happens - just give up and quit."

Sir, you have made statements contrary to the oath you took.

Have you already QUIT?

"Your handle suggest you are flying Jets to defend america."!?!?

Did your parents tell you that you have an incredible imagination?

My Handle is made up of the first three initials of each of my names, PLUS the fact that I am a "guy".

As in "J_____, E______, T_______ + GUY". Okay?

I am proud never to have BEEN in the military, and you've already got me violating my OATH? And being paid stolen dollars??????

I have to admit, I have flown on a commercial jet, though I don't ever recall taking an oath to do it.

Jump to ridiculous conclusions much? Its stuff like this that makes others think we are ALL crazy. Please make sure that in the future people know its just YOU who are crazy. Not the rest of us.

When a 17 year old gets an expanded perspective it's good

"...football used to be life for me; it was the only sport I played. But now I realize that there's more than just playing the game."

Absolutely

I saw that too. Some of us figured this out even earlier in life.

"Should the players rally and

"Should the players rally and play every game for their star running back"

Meh, I'd be much more impressed if it was some 2nd stringer that they quit for. Still good, but you take away the teams best player and the rest just say F it, seasons over anyhow...

Governemt school is the prolem

Close the Government school and football will become a normal sport like any other if it is offered at all in most schools that would be privatly owned. Or local comunity based and owned or however the parents wanted to educate their children.

Extreme sports is quickly

Extreme sports is quickly taking over organized sports in America. I actually did a huge project on this in college for my Entrepreneurship Certificate. More kids are skating today than playing baseball.

This is a very good thing. Extreme sports such as skiing and biking promote rugged individuality, personal achievement and takes kids out into nature. While organized sports are run like the military and promote compliance and obedience.

We all share this eternally evolving present moment- The past and future only exist as inconsequential mental fabrications.

dude

many many more kids are playing baskitball than skateboarding. The thing is once you get to high school out of 1500 or 2000 kids only 15 are allowed to play for the school.

Personally when I was in school I never played for the school but I liked to play pick up games. I Cant shoot worth anything but when it comes to getting the rebound I usually get twice as many as everybody else combined.

That said I much prefer the martial arts and its something that is encouraged for adults, where as all team sports tend to be played by the kiddies. I would suggest you tell kids that the individual sports are for adults who can stand on their own vs the team sports where the kidies have to hide behind the talent of others ;). I am a procrastinator.

Hmmm

that sounds about the same as something like, cross country running is better than track sprinting because you have to deal with variable terrain etc...

I like both kinds of sports but to rate one over the other to me just seems quirky. Like saying that "knitting is monotone and conformist"... it's just so irrelevant.

Freedom is a byproduct of acceptance - judge not.

Take the respect for humanity even further...

If he was hurt at school, why not take the rest of the school year off? If someone has a fatal heart attack at church, you can respect humanity by stop going to church for the rest of the year.

Soccer

I live in a small town and rural area. Our high school graduates about 70 students annually. Football teams cost taxpayers a lot of money. At any game, two rescue squad vehicles are parked at the end of the football field.

One local resident went before the school board proposing offering soccer as an offered sport because it could be played after high school, was safer, and less expensive. At the next board meeting, a very prominent local resident responded to the board that football united the community and that soccer would draw talent away from the football program and thus be divisive to the community. My school board moved on without further considering soccer.

But really, why aren't more schools strapped for money shifting from football to soccer? Soccer is better for the kids' joints, they can kick a ball around without equipment until they are about 35 much like basketball, soccer has international benefits, and it is cheaper. As much as I enjoy watching my Badgers and Packers, I would rather that schools taught my grandchildren soccer.

If you have a daughter or granddaughter, especially, make them aware of the US Women's Soccer Team. They have been awesome and so much healthier than role models on MTV.

Football is a money maker

For most schools football is a big money maker not an expense. At my high school the revenue from football tickets, concessions, etc. paid for the entire athletic department budget for all sports every year, with room to spare. I will bet it is like that in a lot of schools. That is why the whole pay to play crap schools impose is just a tax by another name.

Thanks

While its a nice gesture, I'm not sure stopping your routine

after a tragedy is always the best option.

Frankly keeping these kids busy after school and giving them the proper level of support from coaches and counselors after such a tragedy may have been better. I'm not saying you don't cancel a game or 2 but keep the practice routine. Even if you don't practice use that time to bring in counselors and help the kids grieve.

Now you'll have 50 grieving teenagers suddenly with nothing to do after school and likely many with little or no supervision. That seems like a recipe for underage drinking and more tragedy to me.

I feel terrible for all involved.

It would be the equivalent of not driving after someone you know is killed in a car accident.

I don't see it as a gesture and I think you are mistaken,

I also think you analogy is made incorrectly.

'Stopping' a routine tells me you support the routine more than the truth.

And the fact that you have a shit load of upvotes tells me that there are a lot of trolls.

DP can suffer you guys and we welcome you.

Liberty always wins in the end, and those defending it get to learn a LOT.

It happens anyways

There will be 49 that do this anyways when they find out they are not to get the scholarship and have no other skills. Being a football star is a very HUGE and delusional pipe-dream for 49 of the 50.

"Now you'll have 50 grieving teenagers suddenly with nothing to do after school and likely many with little or no supervision. That seems like a recipe for underage drinking and more tragedy to me."

Seems like you are doing a LOT of "projecting" here.

You have no idea of what these kids will choose to do with their time after school...perhaps they will voluntarily choose to get together and support each other, or get involved with other projects. After all....THEY are the ones who decided to end their season.

And since when is it the school's responsibility to "supervise" what high school students do with their free time, or determine how they should deal with loss?

From the article, it sounds as if the community has really come together over this tragedy, and I will "project" that these grieving kids will find support wherever they turn...and from the correct sources....family, friends, church members, neighbors. Why do you take the statist position that it is the school's responsibility to supervise their time and their grief process?

Your "driving" analogy is absurd.

What percentage of males in ANY high school make 'the team'?

What is your point here? Any kid that is not in a 'sanctioned' school program is going to be selling CIA drugs?

It is not a "Gesture"

Realizing there are more important things than football is the point.

Good post.

And it would only be the equivalent of driving if it was NASCAR driving.

WOW!

Respect for humanity trumping team collectivism?

What a concept. The National Department of Education arm in the district will be reprimanded.

Football is collectivism now?

It is actually the whack job liberals in the government that want Americans to be wussy hippies and play soccer instead of football.
(I actually really enjoy watching USA World Cup Soccer... but I'm being dramatic to make my point more vivid;)

It is the collectivists that are systematically, through the federal education system, trying to phase out football, physicality, competition, & aggression, etc...

Football promotes individualism within 'the collective' aka the team. I would say it promotes unity, while at the same time it promotes diversity, versatility and individuality. You have big fat powerful guys, small quick guys, tall lanky guys, and guys in between. You can be '6"7 350lbs., or '5"5 170, or '6"0 225lbs, etc. You have multiple different skill sets, a different skill set for every position. Everyone is needed. Anyone can aspire to play football. You do your very best to compete, you stand out as an individual, and you help out your team. The emphasis is put on team, because it is about giving, sharing, and sacrificing for others. Not being selfish. And it is a game. Don't forget. It is not forcing anyone to do something they don't want to, like government.

Besides, only skinny kids can play soccer.

Mr. Lawman

I am still waiting.

I'm still waiting Mr. LawmanJed

I'm beginning to believe you are nothing but an infiltrator to destroy Liberty in America.

You and Mr. Goldspan, as well as the Granger have exposed yourselves a LOT in the last few weeks.

Are you ignoring this one more time? ;)

You guys are losing.

THIS IS THE SHIT THAT IRKS me about you Lawmanjed!

I made the FIRST STATEMENT on a post. Reread at it in FULL HERE.

"Respect for humanity trumping team collectivism?

What a concept. The National Department of Education arm in the district will be reprimanded."

Sir, I played football and understand the values of team sports. I played football when Blacks came to my school. We all know the political football that racists play. And WE are long past it.

YOU added all of the words in your post and want me to defend them.

Lawman, you are going to have to create another handle if you are real and not a troll, which I very much doubt.

But look at it this way, you have a 'job'. LOL

Mr. Lawman

I demand a reply.

I gave you a public apology for a post I made when you 'called me out'.

I'm calling you out, not just for a post, but that of deception by intent.

For The Record, Mr. Lawman, the NSA is watching, as well as the people that respect the truth.
